لقد حان الوقت The Time has come

Hello there. I have been thinking about writing a blog for a long time now. I am an Arab Christian (an Evangelical Arab Christian, Lebanese really, the Nazarene Church, in sin el Fil…would you like me to describe my pew?). I love many things about my “tribe” and my culture but I also have many question marks. Growing up, I’ve always wanted to share my questions with the wider world, but I would think I am too young. I got past 18, and contemplated writing a blog, but then I thought, nah, I am not “educated” yet, people will not take me seriously (educated in Lebanon implies having a university degree…any university degree). I finished my BA in English Literature and thought now is the time to unleash my creativity upon the world. But then it hit me, I can discuss social matters, but if I step into church-issues people will crucify me for not having a degree in theology (apparently, there are different degrees at the university). I finished my MA in theology (from NTC-Manchester…doesn’t matter in what, it is from Europe) last summer. I guess if I do not start writing now I never will (kids anyone?).

My first blog will be dedicated to answering all your possible questions ABOUT the blog. My future blogs, hopefully, will be about the world around us. Here we go:

Why did you choose this lame name?

Thank you for the encouraging tone. First of all, since I am a Christian, I thought it only appropriate to choose a Bible verse as a title (see Matthew 24:28). Second of all, since I am an Evangelical, I took the verse out of its context and slapped it on my blog. Thirdly, and most importantly, I expect some of my blogs to attract attention (I hope people other than my immediate family do read them), and perhaps some negative attention. Will I end up dead? I have no clue, but the truth must be spoken even if vultures do gather. Finally, Jesus was known to attract some strange personalities (sinners, prostitutes, fishermen, and hungry sick crowds) and I hope this blog will attract the “vultures” of society and perhaps be a source of hope for them.

Note: Thank you Brent for suggesting this name. I am not sure if you were serious. Too late!

How often do you intend to write?

Well, I am a very busy man. However, I have decided to grace the world with my words (force myself to write) once per week. Now, if great inspiration does fall on me then I might squeeze in another blog in the same week. I will try to be faithful to my promise.

Why do you write in English and Arabic?

The short answer is that I only know English and Arabic (I also know Koine Greek, but it is reading knowledge at the best…surrounded by 4 helping books). The long answer is that I want to reach my community which speaks Arabic and I want to be readable to people outside my community as well (that was a short answer too I guess).

What will you write about?

I will write about things I am experiencing in and out of the church. I will speak from my everyday experience hoping that what I say will echo, even if in a small way, what you are saying or want to say.

You are the voice we want to speak.

مدونة حيث تجتمع النسور

مدوّنة #1 – لقد حان الوقت

مرحبا. لقد كان في فكري أن أكتب مدوّنة من مدة طويلة. أنا مسيحي عربي (مسيحي عربي إنجيلي، لبناني، من كنيسة الناصري، في سن الفيل…هل تريدون وصفا لمقعدي؟).أحب عدة أشياء في “قبيلتي” وثقافتي ولكن لدي أيضا الكثير من علامات الإستفهام. لطالما أردت أن أشارك أفكاري مع العالم، ولكنني كنت أعتقد أنني ما زلت صغيرا. بعدما بلغت سن الـ18 أردت أن أبدأ بهذه المدونة، ولكنني عزفت، فأنا لم أكن “متعلّما” ولن يسمع الناس صوتي (المتعلم في لبنان هو من أنجز شهادة جامعية…أي شهادة جامعية). عندما أنهيت دراسة البكالوريوس في الأدب الإنكليزي ظننت أن الموعد قد حان لأنطلق في سماء الإبداع. وفجأة أدركت أنه باستطاعتي أن أتكلم عن المواضيع الإجتماعية، ولكنّني سأُصلب إن تكلّمت عن الكنيسة لأنني لا أمتلك شهادة في اللاهوت (يبدو أن هناك عدة أنواع شهادات في الجامعة). أنهيت الماجستير في اللاهوت الصيف الماضي (من كليّة الناصري في مانشسر…لا يهم ما الإختصاص، إنها أوروبا يا ناس). إن لم أبدا بالكتابة الأن فمتى أبدأ؟ ..(نبييييل، دورك لتغيّر حفّاض علّوش

سوف أخصص مدونتي الأولى لمجاوبة كل أسئلتكم الإفتراضية حول المدونة. مدوناتي المستقبلية، إن بقينا على قيد الحياة، سوف تكون عن العالم حولنا. لنبدأ

لما اخترت هذا الإسم السخيف؟

شكرا على التشجيع. أولا، أنا مسيحي، فمن اللائق أن أختار آية كتابية كعنوان للمدونة (أنظر متى 24: 28). ثانيا، أنا إنجيلي، فكان لا بد أن أسرق الآية من سياقها وأضعها على المدونة. ثالثا، أتوقع أن تجذب مدونتي الإهتمام (رجائي أن يقرأها أحد غير أهلي وخطيبتي)، ولربما يكون هذا الإهتمام سلبيا. هل سوف أموت وأصبح جثة؟ لا أعرف، ولكنني سأقول الحق ولو اجتمع النسور. رابعا وأخيرا، يسوع كان يجذب أناسا غريبين (خطاة، زناة، صيادي سمك، وجموع مريضة وجائعة) وأملي أن تجذب هذه المدونة “نسور” مجتمعنا وتكون مصدر رجاء لهم.

ملاحظة: شكرا يا صديقي برينت على اقتراحك الإسم. أعتقد أنها كانت نكتة. وأنا، على ما يبدو، لم أفهمها.

ما وتيرة الكتابة التدوينية لديك؟

أنا رجل مشغول. ولكنني قررت أن أغدق بفني على العالم (أجبر نفسي على الكتابة) مرة بالأسبوع. إن وقع الوحي عليّ قد أكتب مرّتين. سوف أحاول الوفاء بوعدي.

لما تكتب بالإنكليزيّة والعربيّة؟

الجواب القصير هو أنني فقط أعرف الإنكليزية والعربية (أعرف اللغة اليونانية القديمة المحكية، ولكني في أفضل الأحوال فقط أعرف قرائتها…مع مساعدة أربع كتب). الجواب الطويل هو أنني أريد أن أصل لمجتمعي الذي يتكلم بالعربية كما وأريد الوصول لخارج مجتمعي (وهذا أيضا جوابا قصيرا على ما يبدو

علام سوف تكتب؟

سوف أكتب حول اختباراتي داخل وخارج الكنيسة. سوف أتكلم من حياتي اليومية على أمل أن تجدوا بعض الصدى من كلامي في كلام تقولونه أو تريدون قوله.
