Is there anything Left to Love about Lebanon? هل بقي شيء نحبه في لبنان؟

This Tuesday the 22nd of November we celebrated the Independence of Lebanon.

We got our independence as a nation in 1943, but since 1975 we have gone through turbulent times. We passed through a 15-year civil war, followed by occupation from Israel till 2000, occupation by Syria till 2005, a war with Israel in the summer of 2006, and a whole lot of political and economic corruption up to the present day.

Today we find ourselves literally living in garbage with no foreseeable solutions to our numerous economic, environmental, and political problems (we still only get 12 hours of government electricity every day).

In all of this we are tempted to ask if there is anything left to love about Lebanon.

My emphatic answer is a big yes! Yes, even amidst all of our problems, there are hundreds of reasons to love Lebanon. So, as we remember our Independence, I invite you to overlook the mountains of problems and focus on the – cliché alert – half that is full in the cup. Here are my 5 top reasons for loving Lebanon:

5 – Lebanese culture is a rich with ethnicities, religions, tastes, and environments.

My friends from outside of Lebanon always ask me about life over here. I struggle to answer them because Lebanon is rich in different religions (18 religious sects), Arab and European tastes, locals and visitors (because of war, work, or tourism) from different parts of the world, and different environmental settings (mountains and beaches). So, you might be walking in one part of Lebanon and feel as if you are in Paris and another part feels like Damascus.

Looking for a philosophical play? There is always one running in Beirut. Looking for a religious group? there is always a religious building around the corner. Looking for a day in nature? There is always a new mountain to explore.

I am truly grateful for the rich cultural experience and opportunities I get every day as a citizen of this country!

4 – Lebanon contains religious freedom.

I am a Christian. Unlike other parts of the Arab world, I am able to freely practice my faith without fear of oppression. As mentioned above, Lebanon contains 18 different religious sects. They all have the right to practice their religion.

We might still have a very long way to go in terms of respecting human rights, but at least as I sit in church on Sunday morning I do not fear death or persecution.

3 – Lebanese food is amazing.

Need I say anything? If you have tried Lebanese food, then I need not. If you haven’t, then what are you waiting for?

2 – Lebanon contains great schools and universities

Our education system, especially at the school level, needs lots of improvement, but in Lebanon you are able to achieve your dreams through the various educational institutions with an affordable price. That is a blessing we easily overlook. Without this system I would not be writing this blog in English at this moment time, nor would I be continuing my postgraduate education abroad, nor would I have a job.

I am thankful for Lebanon’s schools and universities.

1 – Lebanon has a long and rich history that extends thousands of years

Some of you might be rolling your eyes at the fact that Lebanon’s history came in first. But, it is truly amazing that Lebanon as a place is mentioned in different writings from over 3,000 years ago!

The land I walk has been trod upon by millions of feet. The fields that give me food have been providing nurture for thousands of years. The stars that I gaze on at night have been the object of admiration for hundreds of civilizations. It is a pity that many Lebanese do not take the time to read about the rich history of this area.

I am thankful to be part of this vibrant Middle East in this small state that we call Lebanon.

مدونة #53: هل بقي شيء نحبه في لبنان؟

هذه الثلاثاء احتفلنا بعيد استقلال لبنان

أخذنا استقلالنا سنة 1943، ولكن منذ سنة 1975 ونحن نمر بأوقات متأزمة. مررنا بحرب أهلية دامت 15 سنة، تبعها احتلال من اسرائيل حتى سنة 2000، ثم احتلال من سوريا حتى سنة 2005، ثم حرب مع اسرائيل في صيف 2006، وكم الهائل من الفساد السياسي والاقتصادي حتى يومنا هذا

واليوم نجد أنفسنا حرفيا نعيش في الزبالة بدون وجود أي حلول جدية منظورة لمشاكلنا الاقتصادية والبيئية والسياسية – لا زلنا نتلقى فقط 12 ساعة من التغذية الكهربائية من الدولة

وفي كل هذا هناك سؤال يطرح نفسه: هل بقي شيء نحبه في لبنان؟

والجواب الأكيد هو نعم كبيرة! نعم، في وسط المشاكل هناك مئات الأسباب لنحب لبنان. إذا، بينما نتذكر استقلالنا، أدعوكم لصرف النظر عن مشاكلنا الضخمة والتركيز على النصف الملآن من الكوب. هذه هي أسبابي الخمسة لمحبة لبنان

• الثقافة اللبنانية غنية بالإثنيات والديانات والأذواق والبيئات المختلفة

دائما ما يسألني أصدقائي من خارج لبنان عن الحياة هنا. أجد الجواب صعب لأن لبنان غني بعدة أديان (18 طائفة)، أذواق عربية وأوروبية، مواطنون وزوار (بسبب الحرب، العمل، أو السياحة) من عدة بلدان، وأماكن بيئية مختلفة (الجبال والشواطئ). لذا بامكنك أن تمشي بأحد أجزاء لبنان وتشعر كأنك في باريس، وجزء آخر يشعرك كأنك في دمشق

هل تبحث عن مسرحية فلسفية؟ دائما يوجد مسرحية معروضة في بيروت. هل تبحث عن جماعة دينية؟ دائما يوجد مبنى ديني ي كل شارع. تبحث عن نهار في الطبيعة؟ دائما يوجد جبل جديد لتستكشفه

أنا حقا ممتن للخبرة الثقافية التي أواجهها كل يوم كموطن في هذا البلد!

• يوجد حرية دينية في لبنان

أنا مسيحي. وعلى عكس أماكن أخرى من العالم العربي، بامكاني ممارسة ايماني بدون الخوف من الإضطهاد. وكما ذكرت سابقا، يحتوي لبنان على 18 طائفة دينية. وكلها تستطيع ممارسة شعائرها الدينية

لا زالت الطريق طويلة في ما يخص احترام حقوق الإنسان، ولكن على الأقل أستطيع أن أجلس في الكنيسة نهار الأحد من دون خوف من الموت أو الإضطهاد

• الأكل اللبناني رائع

هل أحتاج أن أقول المزيد؟ ان كنت جربته فلا حاجة. ان كنت لم تجربه بعد، فماذا تنتظر

2- يحتوي لبنان على مدارس وجامعات عظيمة

نظامنا التعليمي، وبالأخص على مستوى المدرسة، يحتاج إلى كثير من التحسين، ولكن في لبنان تستطيع تحقيق كل أحلامك من خلال المؤسسات التربوية المختلفة وبأسعار مقبولة. هذه بركة منسية. بدون هذا النظام لما كنت أكتب المدونة هذه باللغة الإنكليزية، ولا كنت أكمل علمي في الخارج، ولا كنت الأن أمتلك وظيفة

• لبنان لديه تاريخ غني يمتد لآلاف السنين

قد يجد البعض خياري للمرتبة الأولى سخيف أو غير مناسب. ولكنه حقا لأمر عجيب أن لبنان مذكور في الكتابات منذ أكثر من 3000 سنة

هذه الأرض التي أمشي عليها قد مشت عليها قبلي ملايين الأقدام. وهذه الحقول التي تنتج طعاما قد أنتجت طعاما لآلاف السنين. وهذه النجوم التي أتفرس بها قد كانت موضع اعجاب لمئات الحضارات. للأسف كثير من اللبنانيين لا يأخذون الوقت لقرائة تاريخ هذه المنطقة الغني

أنا ممتن لانني جزء من هذا الشرق الأوسط النابض بالحياة في هذا الوطن الصغير لبنان

والأن دوركم

لو كنت عشتم في هذا البلد كل حياتكم أو فقط زرتموه لبضعة ساعات، ما هو الأمر الذي تحبونه أكثر شيئ في لبنان؟

Is it God’s Will that Trump becomes President? هل هي مشيئة الله أن يكون دونالد ترامب رئيسا؟

 

Donald Trump is the new president of the USA.

Fact number 1 on the minds of most people today.

Shocking, right?

As Americans and the world come to terms with this news, it struck me how many of my friends on Facebook (too many really) reacted by stating the following fact 2:

It is God’s will that Trump becomes president.

Is that so?

Does God control this world? Is he in charge of all its details?

I have a problem with this line of thinking for two simple reasons.

 

If everything is God’s will, then why is the world messed up?

If God is controlling all the details, then he is doing a very bad job of it.

If God were truly in control and the world was truly moving according to his will then, if he is the loving God we speak about and see in Christ, the world would be a far better place to live in.

 

What about free will?

Did God choose to appoint Hitler as ruler of Germany? Did God start the war in Syria? Did God mastermind the shootings in Paris? Is God trafficking millions of women in the sex trade? Did God get drunk, drive a car, and run people over?

 

I firmly believe in the goodness of God.

I do not believe in a God who causes the chaos, but a God who shouts “let there be light” above and into the chaos.

I firmly believe in a God who takes the evil of a crucified Jesus and turns it into salvation for the entire world.

 

The current world is a place of darkness – as the apostle Paul puts it (see, I also know the Bible) this world is a “present darkness” ruled by authorities and powers that oppose the will of God –  and one-day God will transform this present Babel of darkness into a new creation of light.

Until that day comes, let us not sit in idleness as the darkness grows around us. Let us rather take arms and fight the good fight, working hard to be a voice of love and truth in a world veering towards hatred.

 

No, God did not cause the war in Syria. Money, power, foolishness, and greed caused it. But the church must move to show love to Syrian refugees, turning the war into an opportunity to be the graceful presence of Jesus Christ.

 

No, God did not appoint Donald Trump. A portion of the American people voted him into the office. But the church must move to be a voice of love in a time where, across the globe, the rhetoric of fear, hate, and exclusion growls louder every minute.

 

The world does not submit to the will of God.

I choose to submit.

 

Let us stand in prayer,

Lord,

The present darkness

Grows

Thicker.

Won’t you thunder

Let there be

Love

Amen

مدونة #52 – هل مشيئة الله أن يتم انتخاب دونالد ترامب؟

دونالد ترامب هو الرئيس الجديد للولايات المتحدة الأمريكية

وهذه هي الحقيقة رقم 1 على أذهان معظم الناس اليوم

صدمة، أليس كذلك؟

بينما يستوعب الأمريكيون وباقي العالم هذا الخبر، استوقفني كيف أن الكثير من أصدقائي  على فايسبوك كانت ردة فعلهم هي الحقيقة رقم 2

انها مشيئة الله أن يصبح ترامب رئيسا

حقا؟

هل الله مسيطر على الدنيا؟ هل يسيطر على كل التفاصيل؟

لدي مشكلة مع هذا الطرح لسببين بسيطين

اذا كان كل شيئ هو مشيئة الله، فلماذا العالم سيئ للغاية؟

اذا كان الله مسيطر على كل التفاصيل، اذا هو يقوم بعمل سيئ جدا

لو كان الله حقا هو المسيطر والعالم يتحرك بحسب ارادته، واذا كان هو الإله المحب الذي نتكلم عنه ونراه في المسيح، فلكان العالم مكان أفضل بكثير مما هو عليه اليوم

ماذا عن الإرادة الحرة؟

هل اختار الله أن يصبح هيتلر رئيسا لالمانيا؟ هل بدأ الله الحرب في سوريا؟ هل خطط الله لهجمات باريس؟ هل يقوم الله ببيع ملايين النساء في الاتجار الجنسي؟ هل سكر الله، قاد سيارة، ودهس الناس؟

أنا اؤمن بشدة بصلاح الله

أن لا اؤمن أن الله يسبب الفوضى بل أن الله هو الذي يصرخ “ليكن نور” فوق الفوضى وبداخلها

انا اؤمن بشدة باله يأخذ الشر الذي هو صليب المسيح ويحوله لخلاص لكل العالم

العالم الذي نعيش فيه اليوم هو مكان ظلمة – كما قال الرسول بولس (أنا أيضا أعرف الكتب المقدسة) هذا العالم هو “الظلام القائم” المحكوم من قوات وأسياد تقف ضد مشيئة الله – وفي يوم من الأيام سوف يغير الله ظلام بابل الحالي إلى نور خليقة جديدة

الى حين مجيء ذلك الوقت، دعونا لا نجلس بلا عمل بينما الظلام يمتد من حولنا. بل دعونا نحمل السلاح ونكافح كفاحنا الشريف، عاملين بجد لنكون صوت المحبة والحق في عالم ينجرف نحو الكراهية

كلا، لم يسبب الله الحرب في سوريا. المال، السلطة، الغباء، والجشع سببوا الحرب. ولكن على الكنيسة أن تتحرك لتظهر المحبة للنازحين السوريين، محوّلة بذلك الحرب إلى فرصة لنكون وجود يسوع المسيح المنعم

كلا، لم يعين الله دونالد ترامب. جزء من الشعب الأمريكي انتخبه رئيسا. ولكن على الكنيسة أن تتحرك لتكون صوت المحبة في وقت، في كل أنحاء الكرة الأرضية، يرتفع صوت الخوف والكراهية والإنعزال مزمجرا

العالم لا يخضع لمشيئة الله

أنا أختار أن أخضع

 

دعونا نقف لنصلي

يا رب

الظلمة القائمة

تنمو

وتمدد

ألا تزمجر

ليكن نور

آمين

 

Why I think our New President will not Change Anything – لماذا اعتقد ان الرئيس الجديد لن يغير شيئا

Yesterday was a historic day in Lebanon.

It should not have been. Electing a president should not be a special event. It should be a normal occurrence every 6 years.

Not in Lebanon. After two and a half years of having no president, finally electing one was a historic event.

General Michel Aoun, perhaps more than any other president before him, has split the nation.

You have those celebrating him as the saviour of the country.

Then you have those declaring him the very expression of a corrupt sectarian system.

Those who know me know that I used to be a staunch supporter of Aoun. I still felt happy yesterday as I saw him walk into Baabda Palace. Part of me celebrated the fairy-tale-like-event of a man who was bombed out of the palace returning to it with dignity.

Unfortunately, I do not share the enthusiasm of many of his supporters. I am almost certain that the presence of Michel Aoun in office will not make a difference.

So, this is not a blog asking our new president for anything. This is a blog announcing my lack of trust in any chance for Aoun to enact change.

The reason is not that he is old. Old people who are full of energy and retain their mental abilities are able to be productive in the work area. We can’t write Aoun off because he is 81.

The reason is not because I think that he is corrupt. On the contrary, among all current politicians, I think he, as a person, is the least corrupt.

The reason is simple: Aoun has become part of the system.

People, let us be honest. In Lebanon there is a system, a marriage between organized religion and money, that rules all that happens in this country. We have a small number of leaders and business owners who rule this country.

The story of Aoun that inspired thousands to follow him in the 1980s and thousands to continue following him after that (including me) was his identity as a rebellious figure over the system!

Aoun refused the Taef agreement in 1990.

He refused the Syrian occupation of Lebanon from 1990-2005.

He spoke up against corrupt politicians – his party even published a book on the corruption of the Future Movement (Hariri people).

He promised the Lebanese people a new example of political work, one that would be non-sectarian and anti-feudalism.

What happened in the last few years?

Aoun became part of the system!!

He appointed his son-in-law as a leader of the party he formed – feudalism.

He has adopted a disturbing line of only speaking up for the rights of Christians – sectarianism.

He became allies with Hezbollah, the party which he worked against while in France, advocating for international laws that seek to take away their weapons.

He has recently become allies with Samir Gagea, the same man he accused of being a war criminal.

He has cut a political agreement with Hariri, the leader of the same party which he accused of being hopelessly corrupt and the source of corruption in Lebanon.

I am not saying that I want strife rather than agreement among our political parties in Lebanon.

But the sad truth is that Aoun did not enter the Palace yesterday as a rebel saviour. He entered the Palace yesterday as a Lebanese political leader who is no different than all the others – a leader who has shaken the hands of the system and became friends with it.

What do we need in Lebanon? Who can enact change?

We need leaders who firmly believe that women and men are equal, and do something about it – at the very least make sure that their party leadership is equally distributed among the sexes.

We need leaders who see people as people rather than as members of their religious sects.

We need leaders who rely on their education not their family name to reach success.

We need leaders who care for the weak of society – environment, children, elderly, animals, disabled people, and refugees.

Until such a leader walk through the doors of the Palace, I will continue to have little hope of true change.

So, dear president, forgive me, but I have little faith in you.

One day we shall become a country. That day was not yesterday.

Let us stand in prayer

Lord,

Give us hope

We are hopeless.

Send us a leader,

A movement,

A ripple of change

Amen

البارحة كان يوما تاريخيا في لبنان

لم يكن من المفترض أن يكون كذلك. لا يجب أن يكون انتخاب الرئيس حدثا استثنائيا. يجب أن يكون حدثا دوريا يحدث كل 6 سنين

ليس في لبنان يا حبيبي. بعد سنتين ونصف من الفراغ الرئاسي جاء انتخاب العماد ميشال عون ليكون حدثا تاريخيا

والرئيس ميشال عون، ربما أكثر من كل الذين سبقوه، قسم الأمة

لديك اولئك الذين يحتفلون به كمنقذ للبلد

ولديك آخرون ينعون مجيئه كعلامة مدوية لنظام طائفي فاسد

الذين يعرفونني يعرفون انني كنت من أشد المؤيدين لعون. شعرت بالسعادة البارحة وأنا أراه يمشي منتصبا صوب قصر بعبدا. جزء مني احتفل بالنهاية السعيدة لهذه القصة حين رأيت الرجل الذي هرب من القصر تحت القصف يعود اليه مرفوع الرأس

للاسف، لا اشارك حماسة مؤيديه. أنا شبه متأكد أن وجود ميشال عون في الرئاسة لن يحدث فرقا

اذا، هذه ليست مدونة تطلب أي شيء من الرئيس الجديد، بل هي مدونة تعلن انعدام الثقة بأي فرصة حقيقية لعون ليحدث تغييرا

السبب ليس انه كبير في السن. كبار السن الذين ما زالوا يمتلكون القوة البدنية والذهنية بامكانهم أن يكونوا مثمرين في العمل. لا يمكننا أن نلغي عون من الحسبان لأن عمره 81 سنة

والسبب ليس أنه فاسد. على العكس، أنا أعتقد انه هو كشخص من أقل السياسيين الفاسدين

السبب بسيط: عون أصبح جزءا من النظام

يا ناس، دعونا نكون واقعيين ونعترف بأنه في لبنان يوجد نظام، زواج بين الدين والمال، يتحكم بكل ما يحدث في هذا البلد. لدينا عدد قليل من القادة وأصحاب الأموال الذين يحكمون البلد

قصة عون التي دفعت الآلاف لتأييده في الثمانينات والآلاف (من بينه أنا) لتأييده من بعدها هي كونه شخصية ثورية على النظام!

عون رفض اتفاق الطائف في 1990

عون رفض الإحتلال السوري للبنان من الـ1990 -2005

عون تكلم ضد القادة الفاسدين – حتى أن حزبه أصدر كتاب “الإبراء المستحيل” لفضح فساد تيار المستقبل – جماعة الحريري

هو وعد اللبنانيين بعمل سياسي مختلف يرفض الطائفية والإقطاعية

ماذا حدث في السنوات القليلة الماضية؟

أصبح عون جزءا من النظام!!

عين زوج ابنته رئيسا للحزب الذي أسسه – الإقطاعية

تبنى خطاب مزعج متكلما فقط عن حقوق المسيحيين – الطائفية

أصبح حليفا لحزب الله، وهو نفس الحزب الذي عمل ضده في فرنسا وسن قوانين دولية لنزع سلاحه

أصبح منذ مدة قصيرة حليفا لجعجع، وهو الذي كان ينعته بمجرم الحرب

اتفق سياسيا مع الحريري، وهو قائد الحزب الذي اتهمه عون بالفساد وكونه مصدر الفساد في لبنان

أنا لا أقول أنني أريد النزاع وليس الوفاق بين الأحزاب اللبنانية

ولكن الحقيقة الحزينة هي أن عون لم يدخل القصر البارحة المنقذ الثائر بل دخل القصر كقائد سياسي لبناني لا يختلف عن أي قائد آخر. هو قائد سلّم على النظام وأصبح من أعز أصدقائه

ماذا نحتاج في لبنان؟ من يستطيع أن يحدث التغيير؟

نحتاج لقادة يؤمنون بأن الرجال والنساء متساوون ويفعلون شيئا في هذا الصدد – وأضعف الإيمان هو أن يكون مسؤولي الحزب بالمناصفة بين النساء والرجال

نحتاج لقادة يرون البشر بشرا وليس أرقام في طوائفهم الدينية

نحتاج لقادة يعتمدون على علمهم وليس عائلاتهم للوصول للسلطة

نحتاج لقادة يهتمون بالمستضعفين في المجتمع – البيئة، الأطفال، كبار السن، الحيوانات، الناس الذين يمتلكون تحديات ذهنية وجسدية، واللاجئين

حتى تدخل هكذا قائدة من أبواب قصر بعبدا فلن يكون لدي أمل بتغيير حقيقي

أذا، يا عزيزي الرئيس، أنا أمتلك القليل من الإيمان فيك

سنصبح في يوما ما وطن. ولكن ليس البارحة

دعونا نقف لنصلي

يا رب

اعطنا الأمل

لقد استولى علينا اليأس

ارسل لنا قائدة
