On the Scandals of Christian Apologist Ravi Zacharias – حول فضائح المبشّر الدفاعيّ المسيحي رافي زاكارياس

After the death of the world-famous Christian apologist Ravi Zacharias, sexual scandals about his life began to filter through to the public. Just this week, the worldwide apologetics organization (Ravi Zacharias International Ministries – RZIM) he founded made public a private investigation they had conducted in the manner. You can read all about it here. The report includes stories of hundreds of cases of sexual abuse and idolatry towards and with women from all over the world.

The Evangelical world is in shock. Ravi was, for many, a hero of the faith, and a powerful voice against skeptics. Allow me to share my brief thoughts on the matter:

Ravi’s fall is a warning to all Christian leaders. Rather than smiling smugly, let us first look inwards. I can fall like he did. Indeed, it is not for nothing that when Paul discusses sexual immorality in 1 Corinthians 6, he admonishes Jesus followers to “flee from sexual immorality.” When men have power, they are prone to use their power in abusing women for their own lustful pleasers. Christian leaders are not immune from this. Far be from it. If anything, it seems they are more prone to doing it.

Women voices need to be heard. A number of years before his death, a woman did come forward to report abuse. She was silenced. There was no accountability for Ravi. He continued to minister as usual. As long as many of our churches continue to treat women as second-class citizens to men, and as long as women stories are disregarded in favor of the narrative put forward by men, we will continue to face such scandals! It is high time to give women an equal seat at the leadership table at all levels!

It is dangerous to build churches and Christian organizations around one person. It is both unfair for the pastor and the congregation when the entire church structure rotates around the pastor. It is unfair for the leaders. They are in the spotlight, and people expect them to be perfect. It is unfair for the congregation. The leaders can easily control and manipulate their congregation, because in more than one way the pastor becomes the actual god of the church.

Churches have to take sexual abuse seriously. RZIM were hesitant at first to investigate this issue. They were pushed to do so later. I am thankful that they conducted a transparent investigation into the matter. I am thankful that they have made it public. I am thankful that they are repentant. Churches and Christian organizations need to take sexual abuse seriously. In the minds of many, church has become associated with sexual abuse. We need to be firm about this. Religious leaders must be held accountable by civic courts when they behave abusively. It is not enough to give them a “break” from ministry.

The way RZIM deals with this scandal is more important than their huge work in apologetics. In a way it is already too late. Ravi Zacharais has long been known to have a knack for dishonesty. For years he lied about being a professor at Oxford, a student at Cambridge, and other such false claims to increase his prestige. His lies were revealed (I heard about them from multiple sources years back). Nothing happened. He continued to tour the world like a Christian superstar. And now this. It is a sad state of affairs.

RZIM have done marvelous work in answering skeptics of Christianity. They have probably helped countless people to seek to know Christ more. But the sinful behavior of their founder and leader was enough to tarnish all their resources and publications for good.

The world watches as we deal with this. Let us stand with the women oppressed by Ravi. Let us not put this behind our backs because he is dead. And more than anything, let us hold our religious leaders accountable. They are not lord. Jesus is.

حول فضائح المبشّر الدفاعيّ المسيحي رافي زاكاريا

بعد وفاة المبشّر المسيحي الدفاعي المشهور عالميا رافي زاكارياس، بدأت فضائحه الجنسية تظهر للعلن . إنّ المؤسسة العالميّة الدفاعيّة RZIM، والتي أسسها بنفسه، أصدرت هذا الأسبوع تقريرًا مفصّلا لتحقيق خاص أجرته حول هذا الموضوع، وقد تضمّن مئات القصص حول علاقات واعتداءات جنسية اقترفها رافي بحق  نساء في بلدان عدّة

انصدم العالم الإنجيلي بهذا الخبر. كان رافي بطل إيمان لكثيرين، وصوت شجاع في وجه المشككين بالإيمان المسيحي. دعوني أشارك معكم بعض أفكاري البسيطة حول الموضوع

سقوط رافي هو تحذير لكل القادة المسيحيين. لا يجب أن نبتسم بإعتزاز لأننا أفضل منه، بل لننظر إلى دواخلنا. أنا شخصيًّا قد أقع كما وقع هو. ألم يحثّ الرسول بولس أتباع يسوع المسيح في إطار حديثه في رسالته الأولى إلى أهل كورنثوس والفصل السادس عن مخاطر الزنى للهرب من الخطية الجنسية؟ عندما يتقلّد الرجال مقاليد السلطة، يميلون لإستخدام سلطتهم للإعتداء على النساء لإشباع رغباتهم الجنسيّة. والقادة المسيحيين ليسوا مستثنين من هذه القاعدة، لا بل نشعر في بعض الأحيان أنهم عرضة لهذا الأمر أكثر من غيرهم

يجب أن نستمع لأصوات النساء. قبل وفاته ببضعة سنوات، تقدّمت امرأة بشكوى تحرّش جنسي ضد رافي، غير أنّه تمّ إسكاتها ولم يخضع رافي لأي نوع من  المحاسبة فاستمر بخدمته كالمعتاد. إذا استمرّت كنائسنا بمعاملة النساء على أنّهن مواطنات درجة ثانية بالنسبة إلى الرجال، وإذا استمرّت كنائسنا بإهمال قصص النساء وتصديق روايات الرجال، فسنواجه المزيد من هذه الفضائح! حان الوقت كي تجلس النساء بمساواة مطلقة إلى طاولة القيادة مع الرجال

اعتماد كنيسة أو مؤسسة مسيحيّة على شخص واحد أمر بالغ الخطورة؛ الأمر الذي يُعتَبَر غير عادلٍ لا تجاه القس ولا تجاه اللشعب على حدٍّ سواء. عندما تدور الكنيسة في فلك الراعي سيصبح القائد المسيحي تحت المجهر، وسيتوقّع منه الناس الكمال. وفي الوقت نفسه، سيجد القائد سهولة للتحكّم بالشعب وقيادتهم كيفما يشاء، لأنّه، بطريقة أو بأخرى يصبح هذا القائد إله الكنيسة

على الكنيسة أن تتعامل بجدّية مع حالات الإعتداء الجنسي. تردّدت مؤسسة رافي زاكارياس في البداية في الشروع بالتحقيق في فضائح مؤسسها بعد وفاته، وفي وقتٍ لاحق قد تمّ الضغط عليهم للقيام  بالتحقيق. أنا ممتن لهم لقيامهم بهذا التحقيق الشفّاف، وأنا ممتن لهم لأنهم نشروا التحقيق بشكل علني، وأيضًا وأيضًا أنا ممتن لهم لأنه يبدو أنّهم تائبون. يجب أن تتعامل الكنائس والمؤسسات المسيحية بجدّية مع حالات الإعتداء أو التحرش الجنسي. للأسف، تجذّرت في عقول الكثيرة فكرة ارتباط الكنيسة بالإعتداء الجنسي. يجب أن يقف رجال الدين أمام المحاكم المدنية لدفع الحساب عن جرائمهم الجنسية، إن توقيف الخادم عم الخدمة غير كافٍ البتّة

طريقة تعامل مؤسسة رافي زاكارياس مع هذه الفضيحة أهم بكثير من عملهم الضخم في حقل الدفاعيات، مع أنّه وللأسف قد يكون قد فاتهم القطار. لقد عرفنا منذ زمن بعيد أن رافي زاكارياس أدلى ببعض الأدّعاءات الكاذبة، فقد كذب بخصوص كونه “بروفيسور” في جامعة أوكسوفرد وأنه كان تلميذًا في جامعة كامبريدج وغيرها من الإدّعاءات التي تضيف لمعانًا لصورته الأكاديمية. ولقد كشفت عدة مواقع لنشطاء ملحدين أكاذيبه. لم يحدث أي شيء إزاء هذا الموضوع، لا بل  استمر بالسفر حول العالم كبطل مسيحي،  وفي النهاية أُقيم له مأتم مهيب. والآن سمعنا عن هذه الفضائح، يا له من وضع محزن

قام رافي ومؤسسته بعمل جبّار في الإجابة على الشكوك حول المسيحية، وعلى الأرجح ساعدوا عدد لا يحصى من الناس للتقرّب من المسيح، غير أنّ خطيئة المؤسس كانت كافية لتشويه كل مصادرهم وإصداراتهم إلى أمد غير منظور

العالم يراقب ردّة فعلنا. لنقف مع النساء المظلومات من قبل رافي بدل تجاهل الموضوع لأنه مات. وقبل كل شيء، لنضع قادتنا المسيحيين أمام مسؤولياتهم. فهم ليسوا بأربابٍ لنا، بل لنا ربّ واحد وهو يسوع المسيح
