تخرق التراتيل الدينية صمت الحجر المنزلي. يبدو أن البلدية أرسلت لنا النجدة من فايروس كورونا. سيارة مع مكبّر صوت، وتحمل على ظهرها صليب وتمثال القديسة مريم العذراء تجوب شوارع وأحياء ضيعتنا. تكاثرت على وسائل التواصل الإجتماعي عند المسيحيين عبارات مثل “لا تخافوا على لبنان فهو في قلب مار شربل” وما شاكل. وبالطبع سبق ذلك عدة أحداث مشابهة من “السحر” الديني حيث أرسل بعضهم التراب المقدس من مزار قديس لمرضى الكورونا في المستشفى. وغيرها من الأحداث المتفرقة

ولكي لا يعتقد البعض أن هذه المدونة هجوم إنجيلي على الطوائف المسيحية الأخرى، أذكر للقارئ أنه يوجد لدينا حركات “سحرية” مشابهة من صلوات لتغطية المؤمنين بدم يسوع لكي لا يصيبهم مرض، وغيرها من رفض لبس الكمامة لأن المؤمن بيسوع لديه حماية خاصة. وقد تطرّقت لهذا الموضوع من قبل في مدونة أنتقد فيها تركيز المؤمنين على طلب الحماية من الله من هذا الوباء. وأيضا لكي لا يعتقد البعض أنني أتجنّى على بلديتي، أذكر للقارئ أنهم ثابروا على تقديم الخدمات الصحية المجانية لأهل الضيعة. وهم اتصلوا بعائلتنا عند إصابتنا بكورونا قبل شهر واضعين أنفسهم تحت تصرفنا

ولكن ما فائدة رفع الصليب والقديسين ودم المسيح بوجه الوباء؟ يبدو لا شيء. لو كان لهذه الممارسات الدينية الوقائية شيء من الفعالية، لكنا رأينا أن نسبة الإصابات بفايروس كورونا عند المسيحيين أقل منها عند المسلمين في لبنان. أو لكنا رأينا نسبة الإصابات بالفايروس في لبنان أقل منها في باقي الدول المجاورة. ولكن لا الأولى ولا الثانية صحيحتان، بل يكاد يصل الوضع الصحي في لبنان إلى درك سلّم الدول المنكوبة بالفايروس

بالطبع لا أدعو للإلحاد، ولا أرى في إصابة المؤمن، مسيحيا كان أم مسلما، والملحد بالتساوي بالفايروس برهانا على وجود الله من عدمه. الإيمان مبني بجوهره على علاقة شخصية بين الإنسان والإله، وكأي علاقة حب صحية، لا تُبنى علاقة الإنسان بربّه على المصلحة المشتركة. فإيماني بالله لا يتعلق بحمايته، وإلا كنت كمن يحاول لَيْ ذراع الله لمصلحتي. وعلى فكرة، هذه أحد الطرق التي يفرّق فيها علم الأديان بين “السحر” و”الدين.” الدين مجموعة طقوس وعقائد تهدف للوصل بين الفرد والله، بينما السحر مجموعة قوانين وشعوذات تهدف للسيطرة على قدرات الآلهة والقوى الخارقة للطبيعة وتحريكها. وينبغي الإشارة هنا أيضا، من باب الأمانة، أن عدد متزايد من علماء الأنثروبولوجيا يرفضون هذه التفرقة الواضحة بين الدين والسحر

وأيضا لا أدعو لإعتناق إيمان “منطقي” كما فعل بعض العلماء الألمان الذين فسّروا معجزات المسيح بشكل منطقي مادي وأخرجوا كل ما هو عجيب من الكتاب المقدس. إنه لمن الجنون أن يقول متعبّد لله أن إيمانه منطقي. نعبد إله لا نراه، وندّعي أننا مملوئين من روح إلهية، وأننا جزء من ملكوت روحي. وكل هذه ليست منطقية لا من قريب ولا من بعيد لمن يؤمن بالمادّية ولا شيء غيرها. إيماننا بمسيا يهودي مصلوب ومقام، كما عبّر بولس قبل ألفي عام، هو مهزلة لمن يسمعنا من خارج الكنيسة. فلا، لست أدعو لإيمان منطقي بالمطلق، مع إيماني القوي بأن تحكيم العقل في العقائد الدينية والممارسات الإيمانية هو بدوره جزء من العبادة

أسس الإيمان المسيحي ترتكز على تضحية بالذات لأجل الآخرين. ألم يدعنا المسيح للتمثّل بالآب الذي يشرق شمسه على الأبرار والأشرار بالتساوي؟ لذا أشعر بالإنزعاج من التعاليم والممارسات التي تؤسس لفرادة المسيحي وتميّزه عن باقي البشر. لمن يعتقد أنه مميز، أنا متأسف منك . ولكن إمكانية إصابتك بفايروس كورونا هي مثلها مثل تلك التي لجارك المسلم وأيضا الملحد. لا بل، بحسب العهد الجديد، على المسيحي أن يتوقع حياة مليئة بالإضطهاد وبذل الذات والتخلّي عن الأموال والممتلكات

لا ضير بالطبع من أن تمشي بالصليب في أحياء مدينتك. ولكن انتبه ألا يكون ذلك الصليب، الذي هو بالأساس رمز للعار والموت الكفّاري عن الخطاة، فرصة لـ”تنفش بريشك” كمسيحي وتقول، أنا مميز عند الله. وانتبه ألا يتحول لحجر عثرة لمن يرى الصليب اليوم ويُصاب غدا، فيفقد ثقته بالمسيح والله والإيمان من أساسه

Does the Cross Protect Christian Areas from Covid-19?

Christian songs invade our lockdown existence at home. It seems that our local municipality has sent the cavalry to fight Covid-19: a car with a blaring speaker tours the streets of my town in the Christian suburbs of Beirut, carrying a cross and a statue of the Virgin. We have seen a surge of such “magical” religious practices. We read on the social media pages of Christians that we should not fear for Lebanon, because it is under the protection of St. Charbel (a local very-much revered saint). In the beginning of the health crisis, dirt from the holy site of a saint was sent to the hospital to treat Covid cases.

Lest anyone think that this blog is an Evangelical attack on non-Evangelical Christians in Lebanon, I note to my reader that we too have our share of “magical” religious practices. Many in my tribe proclaim the protection of the blood of Christ over each other. Others refuse to wear masks because believers do not get infected. I have spoken up against this Evangelical focus on personal protection for believers from the pandemic before. Also, lest anyone think I am bashing my municipality, I note that they have continuously offered free medical support for our town. They also graciously called my family when we got Corona last month, offering their help and support.

But what good does raising a cross, statues of the saints, and the blood of Christ have against the pandemic? Not much it seems. If these preventive religious practices had any effect, you would expect to see a lower rate of infections in Christian areas in Lebanon compared to Muslim areas, or a lower rate of infection in Lebanon as a whole, compared to other countries. It is not the case at all. In fact, if anything, we are inching towards the top of the list of countries who have completely failed to deal with the pandemic.

Naturally, I am not calling for atheism. I do not see in the equality of the rate at which believers and non-believers are infected with the virus any indication to existence or none thereof of God. Faith, in its essence, is built upon a personal relationship between the mortal and the divine. And, similar to any healthy love relationship, it is not built on gain. My faith in God is not conditioned in his protection of me, or else I am trying to manipulate him. In fact, one of the ways in which religious studies differentiate between magic and religion is this: Religion is a series of doctrines and rituals intended to bridge the gap between humans and God, while magic is a series of rules and incantations intended to control gods and supernatural powers. To be fair, an increasing number of anthropologists refuse this clean-cut differentiation between religion and magic.

I am also not calling for a “rational” faith. Some German scholars attempted to explain the miraculous in the life of Jesus in materialistic terms. Indeed, they removed all signs of the miraculous from the Bible. It is madness for one to proclaim worship of God: belief in an entity unseen; a claim that one is filled with a divine spirit; and that one is part of a spiritual kingdom. All these claims are not rational in any way for those who believe in a materialistic existence. Our faith in a crucified and resurrected Jewish messiah, as Paul aptly put it two thousands years ago, is a farce for those outside the church. So I am not calling for a rational faith par excellence. Although, if truth be told, I strongly believe that using our minds in matters of religious doctrine and practice is also an act of worship.

The foundations of the Christian faith rest on self-sacrifice for others. Did not Jesus call us to be like the Father who shines his sun on the wicked and the righteous together? So I feel disturbed when I meet with teachings and practices that call for the uniqueness of of the Christian over and against the rest of humanity. If you think you are special, I am sorry, you are not. The probability of you catching the virus is the same as that of your Muslim and atheist neighbor. In fact, as per the New Testament, followers of Christ should expect a life full of persecution, self-sacrifice, and the loss of money and property.

There is no harm, of course, in carrying a cross in our neighborhoods. But be careful lest that cross, which is in essence a sign of shame and death for others, become a symbol of conceit and pride to be toted as a Christian trophy against other religions – “we are more special than you in the eyes of God.” Be careful lest that cross become a stumbling block for someone who sees it today and gets infected tomorrow, thus losing all trust in Christ, God, and faith.

هناك مسيحيون خائفون من لُقاح كورونا لأنهم يعتقدون أنه يحتوي على “سِمة الوحش” – صورة من صور سفر رؤيا لخضوع الناس “للوحش” الإسكاتولوجي قبل الدينونة الأخيرة

من هو هذا الإله الذي تعبده الذي ممكن أن تكون جزء من شعبه ومُخلِصا له وتخدمه وتطيعه، وثم فقط لأنك وضعت رقاقة ذكية في جسدك يرفضك ويعتبرك عدو له ويرمي بك إلى الهلاك؟ ليس إلهي، ولا إله ربنا يسوع المسيح

أصلا ما هو هذا الخلاص الإلهي المبني على قدرتك على تمييز سمة الوحش ورفضها؟ ما هذا الهراء اللاهوتي/الديني؟

فكرة “سمة الوحش” في رؤيا دائما تترافق مع فكرة مفصلية وهي “السجود للوحش.” يعني رؤيا يحذّر كنائس ساحل آسيا الصغرى (تركيا اليوم) أوائل القرن الثاني المضطهدة بعنف من روما بعدم التراخي في الإيمان والسجود لروما أي ترك الإيمان المسيحي والعودة للوثنية وما يرافقها من ممارسات غير أخلاقية

حتى ولو اعتبرت أن الوحش هو كائن مستقبلي أو شخصية سياسية معاصرة، محاربته لا تكون من خلال رفض اللقاحات والتفتيش عن رقم 666. لا تسجد للوحش من خلال السجود للمسيح وإعلانه ربا لك. وتعلن المسيح ربّا لك من خلال الطاعة له. وماذا طلب منا المسيح؟

أن نطعم الفقراء، نقف بجانب المظلومين، ونحب الأعداء، ونخبر عن الأخبار السارة، أن العلاقة مع الله متاحة للجميع

لو رأتنا الكنائس التي كتب لها يوحنا رؤيته نفتّش عن أرقام سريّة ونحارب لقاحات علمية لضحكت علينا وقالت لنا “مسيحيتنا كانت الموت للمسيح بفرح.” مسيحيّة الملايين حول العالم اليوم هي الموت للمسيح وخدمة الفقراء والمهمّشين. أما المسيحية التي تفتش عن المؤامرات العلميّة ضدها، فهذه لا تشبه العهد الجديد لا من قريب ولا من بعيد

Will the Covid-19 Vaccine have the Mark of the Beast?

There are Christians who are afraid of the Corona vaccine because they believe that it contains the “mark of the beast” (An image we find in the book of Revelation in the Bible of people’s submission to the eschatological “beast” before the final judgment).

Who is this God that you worship, whom you can part of his people, loyal to him, serve and obey him, and then only because you put a smart chip in your body he rejects you, considers you his enemy, and throws you into the fire? It is not my God, nor is it the God of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Even more yet, what is this divine salvation which is based on your ability to recognize and reject the mark of the beast? What is this theological / religious nonsense?

The idea of ​​”the mark of the beast” in Revelations is always associated with the notion of ​​”worshipping the beast.” Revelations warns the churches of the coast of Asia Minor (Turkey today) at the beginning of the second century, violently persecuted by Rome, not to leave their faith and worship Rome. John urges them not to leave the Christian faith and return to paganism and the immoral practices that accompany it.

Even if you consider the beast to be a future being or a contemporary political figure, we do not fight it through refusing vaccinations and searching for the number 666. You do not worship the beast by declaring Christ as Lord. You declare Christ your Lord through obedience to Him. What did Christ ask of us?

To feed the poor, stand by the oppressed, love our enemies, and proclaim the good news, that the relationship with God is available to all.

If the churches that John wrote to saw us searching for secret numbers and fighting scientific vaccines, they would laugh at us and say to us, “Our Christianity was death for Christ with joy.” The Christianity of millions around the world today is death for Christ and serving the poor and the marginalized. But a Christianity that searches for scientific conspiracies against it does not resemble the Christianity of the New Testament in any way or form.

Did the Coronavirus Prove that God does not Exist? هل أثبت فايروس كورونا عدم وجود الله؟

It is quite the time to be alive. We are living in a global pandemic. This is not an apocalyptic movie, video game, or board game. This is real life. We sit huddled in the safety of our homes, and thousands of medical workers and other vital parts of society brave the outdoors.

But in the online world no one is staying inside. On the contrary, old wars have been renewed, and new wars are being waged. The most prominent being between atheists and believers.

The main argument used by atheists can be paraphrased by the following statement: God is imaginary. When real danger struck, all religious places of worship were closed. Religious leaders are unable to find a solution. All eyes turn now to science. Religion is useless.

I will attempt to reply to this accusation. I will state from the onset that I do not care for defending religion in general. In fact, I do not care for defending Christianity, or at least all that Christianity has become. I will be defending my personal faith in Jesus Christ.

First of all, yes, atheists are right. A magical god who protects believers from all dangers and intervenes to solve all their problems does not exist (see my take on praying for protection in my previous blog). I don’t care what bible passages you can quote (que psalm 91), the current crisis, for all intents and purposes, has proven beyond a shadow of doubt that such a god does not exist.

Second, the New Testament never claims that it’s the church’s job to heal diseases. Yes, God has intervened in scriptures, history, and with people I know personally to heal in a supernatural way. But that has never been the purpose of faith in Jesus. You see, the bible places the problems of this world firmly on sin and not sickness. This world is broken. Humanity is broken. If anything, the current coronavirus crisis has proven that. Prices have gone up and people are panic-buying all the resources. The issue of sin, be it selfishness, hate, or general evil, will not be resolved by science. A thousand years more of scientific research will not make us better people. Science can and does provide solutions to most of the problems of this world. Science allows me to write this blog and post it online. Science will hopefully soon provide a vaccine for Covid-19. But it can’t devise a solution for the problem of sin. This is the gospel. This is the message of Jesus. Perhaps it is too simple that it will be laughable for some. But it is what it is. Jesus, by his life, death, and resurrection, was victorious over sin and death. We can join in his victory if we choose to follow him.

Third, the Christian faith hinges on one fact. Not on miracles. Not on supernatural happenings. The Christian faith hinges on the death and resurrection of Christ. Prove those wrong and yes, you have proven that my faith in Jesus is wishful thinking.

Fourth, and finally, there are brilliant scientists who follow Jesus. There are brilliant scientists who are atheists. A Christian worldview sees the hand of God behind and through all that is good in this world, including scientific advancements and discoveries. Faith in Jesus does not oppose science. Yes, the church has stood in the face of science multiple times across history. Those events are deplorable. But the church has also stood with science and enhanced scientific discovery in other places and times across history.

I join my voice to that of my atheist friends in asking my fellow followers of Jesus, and all believers in general, to take a moment to reconsider our theology in light of what is happening.

I am aware that this blog does not answer all the thoughts and questions of my atheist friends. I am aware that the problem of evil (how does a good God allow evil in the world?) is wider than the above discussion. I hope that, at the very least, this blog pushes my atheist friends to reconsider their attacks on religion. I also hope that this blog pushes my fellow believers to reconsider their views about God.

Allow me to end with a salute to all the scientists, nurses, doctors, cleaners, workers in the food industry, and security forces working tirelessly day and night in the face of danger to help bring an end to this nightmare.

هل أثبت فايروس كورونا عدم وجود الله؟

إنه لوقت مميّز في تاريخ البشرية! ها نحن نعيش  وسط وباء عالمي! لسنا نشاهد فيلمًا أو نلعب لعبة إلكترونيّة، أو ثقافيّة عن نهاية العالم، بل هذه حقيقة واقعة. نحن نجلس مختبئين في بيوتنا بينما يواجه آلاف العاملين في قطاعات الصحّة والطعام وغيرها العالم الخارجي الخطير

ولكن عبر الإنترنت الصورة تختلف تمامًا، لا أحد “يقبع في منزله” بل تم إحياء حروب قديمة، واندلعت أخرى جديدة. وأهم تلك الصراعات هو الصراع بين الملحدين والمؤمنين

الحجة الأساسيّة التي يلجأ إليها الملحدون هي التالية: الله خرافة. عندما دق ناقوس الخطر الحقيقيّ أُغلقت دور العبادة أبوابها وعجز رجال الدين عن إيجاد الحلول. والآن كل العيون شخصت نحو العلم، والدين أصبح بلا منفعة

سأحاول الردّ على هذا الإتّهام ولكن دعوني أوضّح أنه بدايةً  لا يهمّني الدفاع عن الأديان بشكل عام، ولا حتى يهمّني الدفاع عن المسيحيّة، أو أقلّه ما آلت إليه المسيحيّة في يومنا هذا، في المقابل، سأدافع عن إيماني الشخصي بيسوع المسيح

أولًا، الملحدون على حق. لا يوجد إله خرافي يحمي المؤمنين من كل المصائب ويتدخل دائًما لحل مشاكلهم (أنظر رأيي بالصلاة من أجل حماية إلهيّة في المدوّنة الماضية). لا يهمني إن استطعت أن تقتبس آيات كتابيّة حول هذا الموضوع (مثال مزمور 91)، فواقع الأمر أنّ هذه الأزمة أثبتت بما لا يقبل الشك بأن إله مماثل غير موجود

ثانياً، لا يدّعي العهد الجديد بأنّ دور الكنيسة هو الشفاء من الأمراض. نعم، تدخّل الله في الكتاب المقدس وعبرالتاريخ وحتّى مع أناس أعرفهم شخصياً بالشفاء بطرقٍ تفوق الطبيعة، غير أنّ هذا الأمر لم يكن يومًا هدف الإيمان بيسوع. الكتاب المقدس يحدّد مشكلة البشرية، ألا وهي الخطية وليس المرض. عالمنا فاسد والبشرية فاسدة، وأزمة فايروس كورونا هذه تذكّرنا بتلك الحقيقة المرّة، فالأسعار في غلاء مستمر والناس تشتري الأغراض بهلع وبدون التفكير بغيرها. ليس بمقدور العلم أن يجد الحلّ لمشكلة الخطيّة، أو سمّها الأنانية أو الكراهية أو الشرّ بشكل عام، ولو استمرّت الأبحاث العلميّة لألف سنة، فلن نصبح أناسًا أفضل. يقدّم العلم الحلول لمعظم مشاكل الأرض؛ فالعلم يتيح لي كتابة هذه المدوّنة ويتيح لي الوسيلة لتحميلها عبر الشبكة الإلكترونيّة، وأرجو أن يكتشف العلم الحل عمّا قريب لفايروس كورونا، ولكنّ العلم عاجز أمام مشكلة الخطيّة. وهذا هو الإنجيل؛ هذه هي رسالة يسوع! قد تبدو بسيطة لدرجة السخافة، ولكن هذه هي ببساطة ولا أمتلك غيرها: فيسوع من خلال حياته وموته وقيامته انتصر على الخطيئة والموت، وننضم نحن لهذا الإنتصار إن اخترنا اتباع المسيح

ثالثاً، الإيمان المسيح لا يرتبط بالعجائب أو الأمور الفائقة للطبيعة، غير أنّه يرتبط بحقيقة واحدة، وهي موت يسوع وقيامته. إن استطعت أن تبرهن أنّ المسيح لم يمت ولم يقم من الأموات فعندئذٍ تكون قد برهنت أن إيماني بيسوع مجرد خرافات وأوهام

رابعاً وأخيراً، في عالمنا علماء بارعون وهم من أتباع المسيح، وعلماء آخرون بارعون وهم ملحدون. المنظار المسيحي للعالم يرى يد الله في كل أمر صالح في الكون، بما في ذلك الإنجازات والإكتشافات العلميّة. فالإيمان بيسوع لا يتعارض مع العلم. نعم، للأسف وقفت الكنيسة عبر التاريخ عدة مرات في وجه العلم، وهذه أحداث مشينة في تاريخنا، ولكنّها وقفت أيضا في عدّة مراحل وأماكن في التاريخ مع التقدّم العلمي وساهمت به

أضمّ صوتي لأصوات أصدقائي الملحدين في الطّلب من أتباع يسوع والمؤمنين بشكل عام بأن يستغلّوا الفرصة للتفكير في لاهوتنا على ضوء ما يحدث اليوم

هذه المدونة لا تجيب كل أفكار أصدقائي الملحدين وأسئلتهم، وهي لا تناقش الموضوع الأوسع وهو مشكلة الشر (كيف يسمح إله صالح بحدوث الشر؟)، ولكن رجائي أن تدفع أصدقائي الملحدين على الأقل لإعادة التفكير بهجومهم على الدين. وأصلّي أن تدفع زملائي المؤمنين بإعادة التفكير بنظرتهم لله

Should we Pray for Protection from the Coronavirus? هل يجب أن نطلب حماية الله من فايروس الكورونا؟

Close to 100,000 people have been infected so far with the Coronavirus. Over 3,000 have died. The numbers keep climbing as the virus spreads particularly in this area of the world.

Although it is not in any way the most deadly threat facing humanity. A host of other viruses, diseases, and wars are killing more people, including the flu. The Coronavirus is particularly scary. It is spreading all over the globe, and we haven’t found a cure for it yet.

There is a silver lining to the current crisis. As we go out less to malls and public places (including church), we are spending more time together as a family and with friends. As people fly and drive less, and factories quite down, the planet takes a break from our pollution. I do not mean to speak ill of the suffering of thousands from the virus. Please do not feel offended.

But should we fear this new outbreak? Should we pray for God’s “protection” over our lives?

Of course, a believer will naturally seek God first when in trouble. That is not the issue here. The issue is the following: should we focus our prayers and energy on protection from this virus? Should our reaction to this virus be “Lord please protect me?” I think not! You see, whether our life ends by a virus outbreak, car accident, a war (this option is mainly open for people in the Middle East – sorry), or peacefully in bed, it will end sooner than later. In fact, the Coronavirus reminds us, as the apostle James puts it, our life is but a breath, short and fragile.

So what should we pray for? Not to escape death, that’s for sure. In one of his more shocking teachings, Jesus asks his followers to carry their crosses and die with him. He urges them to die of their old selves and live a new life, a new state of being, with him and through him. In that state, they do not live for themselves, but for God. Physical death becomes a thing to be welcomed, not feared.

Do not pray for protection from the Coronavirus. Do not pray for protection from death. Pray for protection from an existence where having a good job and a spacious home is all you dream for and work for. Pray for protection from a life empty of meaning and purpose. Pray for wisdom to face these times, troubling as they might be, like Jesus would, for the glory of God!

Pray for protection from a life not worth dying for

 

Let us stand in prayer:

Dear Lord,

Protect us from the danger

Of living in the death

Of self and money

Amen

هل يجب أن نطلب حماية الله من فايروس الكورونا؟

أصاب فايروس الكورونا قرابة مئة ألف شخص حتّى الآن، ووقد أودى بحياة أكثر من ثلاثة آلاف شخص. وتستمر الأرقام بالتزايد مع انتشار المرض في هذه المنطقة من العالم

وبالرغم من أنّ هذا الفايروس ليس أخطر ما يواجه الإنسانيّة – عدد كبير من الفايروسات والأمراض والحروب، بما في ذلك الزكام،  أطاح بعددٍ أكبر من البشر، – غير أنّ فايروس الكورونا مخيف، وهو يتفشّى في كل الأرض ولم نجد له العلاج بعد

ولكن في هذه المصيبة بعض الأمور الإيجابيّة. بينما نختار أن نبقى في البيوت ولا نرتاد الأماكن العامّة مثل مراكز التسوّق (والكنائس)، نجد أنفسنا نمضي وقتًا أكثر مع العائلة والأصدقاء.  وفيما نخفّف من سفرنا ورحلاتنا، وبينما تبطأ حركة مصانعنا، يرتاح كوكبنا المتعب من تلوّث البشر المتفاقم. بالطبع أنا لا أقصد السخرية ممّن يعاني من هذا الفايروس. أعذروني

أمّا السؤال الذي يجب طرحه في هذه المرحلة هو، هل يجب أن نخاف من هذا الإنتشار الجديد للفايروس؟ هل يجب أن نصلي طالبين “حماية” الله على حياتنا؟

من الطبيعي أن يلتجأ المؤمن لله أولا في وقت الشدّة. ليست هذه المسألة التي أناقشها هنا. السؤال هو، هل يجب أن تتركز صلواتنا وكل طاقتنا على الحماية من هذا الفايروس؟ هل يجب أن تكون ردة فعلي تجاه الفايروس هي “يا رب احمني”؟ لا أعتقد ذلك! حياتنا ستنتهي عمّا قريب، سواء بسبب انتشار فايروس أو في حادث سيارة أو بسبب الحرب (هذا الخيار متاح في الشرق الأوسط  فحسب– أعتذر من “الأجانب”) أو بسلام في السرير. بالحقيقة، يذكّرنا فايروس الكورونا بأنّ حياتنا، كما يقول الرسول يعقوب، هي مجرد نفس عابر، قصيرة وهشّة

فما هي الأمور التي سنرفعها بالصلاة إذًا؟  حتمًا ليس أن نهرب من الموت. ففي أحد تعاليم يسوع الصادمة، طلب من تلاميذه أن يحملوا صليبهم ويموتوا معه؛ فقد حثّهم على الموت عن نفوسهم القديمة والسير في حياة جديدة، أي عيش حالة وجود جديدة معه وفيه. في تلك الحالة لا يحيا المرء لنفسه في ما بعد بل لله! يصبح الموت الجسدي أمرًا عاديًّا، لا بل مرحّبٌ به وغير مخيف

لا تصلِّ طالبًا الحماية من فايروس كورونا، لا تصلِّ طالبا الحماية من الموت. بل صلِّ طالبا الحماية من وجود جلّ أهدافه الوظيفة الجيّدة والبيت الواسع. صلِّ طالبًا الحماية من حياة خالية من المعنى والهدف. صلِّ طالباً الحكمة لتواجه هذه الأيام الصعبة كالمسيح، لمجد الله

صلِّ طالبًا الحماية من حياة لا تستحقّ أن تموت لأجلها

يا رب

احمنا من مخاطر

العيش ونحن أموات

في محبّة الذات والمال
