A Thousand Ways to Understand the Cross (2): Jesus died before us – ألف طريقة لفهم الصليب (2): المسيح مات قبلنا

I have escaped my 9 child cousins and sit in an enclosed chamber writing this blog in Amman, Jordan (perhaps the fact that it is midnight has helped my escape). I am reminded this week that having a loving family is awesome, but it is even more awesome to have a family in the country I am attending a conference in!

Now, back to business: Easter is almost upon us (10 beautiful days of celebration and holidays – at least if you work in a school, like me), and we find ourselves once more facing the cross of Christ. What does it mean exactly? When we look around us inside and outside church, what we see are three answers:

1. The cross is a mere symbol we wear to represent our identity and power as Christians (kill the others, defend the faith)
2. The cross is a sign of pity and sadness.
3. The cross is God the Father killing God the son in our place so he would not be angry anymore.

We discussed those three options in the first post on the meaning of the cross. Now, let me repeat. Yes, the cross is a symbol, is a sad place, and is Jesus carrying the sins of humanity. However, it is NOT only that. It is Jesus dying WITH us (first post) and more, much more.

The cross is Jesus dying before us so we can die like/with him

Many times we have an escapist mentality. Jesus died so I do not have to die. On some level that is true for in the cross of Jesus we find life. We will speak a bit about this in the second point. However, in its essence, Jesus’ death is him showing us the way.

In a famous passage in Mark 8, just after Jesus had announced that he is to suffer and die, and just after Peter had rebuked him, Jesus declares: “if anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” Jesus repeats that same command in different ways throughout Mark 8-10. His message is simple: following me is not a way to earthly power but a way of self-denial and death.

Perhaps David Hayward says it best in this cartoon. So, what is the cross? It is Jesus dying before us so we can follow him unto death. The cross reminds us that we are called to be like Jesus in giving up everything for others. We are called to be like Jesus in choosing to walk against the wisdom of common sense and choosing to die in order to truly live.

However, Jesus’ story does not end at the cross, and his death brings resurrection. As Paul continuously puts it, “we were buried therefore with him in baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in the newness of life” (Romans 6:4).

Just as we are called to die like Jesus, we find ourselves for the first time alive like him too, in love to God and others. A love, just like his, that loves everyone no matter who they are, and is ready to continuously and daily die for them. That is the life we live, a life of daily death and resurrection.

Our God, as revealed in Jesus, is not like an earthly king. He is, in his very nature, a self-emptying God. His incarnation and his cross assure us of his identity. Michael Gorman says it best in his book Inhabiting the Cruciform God while analyzing the famous song in Philippians 2: 6-11

“Although Messiah Jesus was in the form of God, a status people assume means the exercise of power, he acted in character – in a shockingly ungodlike manner according to normal but misguided human perceptions of divinity, contrary to what we would expect but, in fact, in accord with true divinity – when he emptied and humbled himself.” (page 27 – Kindle edition)

والآن نعود لمسألتنا: الفصح على الأبواب (10 أيام جميلة من الأعياد والعطلة، على ألأقل إن كنت تعمل في مدرسة مثلي) ونحن نجد أنفسنا في مواجهة صليب المسيح. ماذا يعني بالضبط؟ عندما ننظر إلى داخل وخارج كنائسنا نسمع 3 أجوبة

أ- الصليب مجرد رمز نلبسه وهو يمثل هويتنا وقوتنا كمسيحيين ، وبه نقتل الآخر وندافع عن إيماننا

ب- الصليب علامة حزن

ج- الصليب هو الله الآب يقتل الله الإبن لكي يتوقف غضبه

لقد ناقشنا هذه الإمكانيات الثلاث في أول مدونة حول معاني الصليب. دعوني أكرر. نعم، الصليب رمز ومكان حزين كما وهو المسيح يحمل خطايا البشر. ولكنه ليس فقط هكذا. هو المسيح يموت معنا (المدونة الأولى) وأكثر أيضا من ذلك

في الكثير من الأحيان نمتلك فكرا جبانا. ونقول أن المسيح مات لكي لا نموت نحن. في مكان ما هذا صحيح. وسوف نتكلم قليلا عنه في الجزء الثاني في الأسفل. ولكنه في جوهره صليب المسيح يرينا الطريق الذي علينا أن نسلكه

في مقطع شهير في مرقس 8، وبعدما أعلن يسوع أنه سوف يتألم ويموت وبعدما انتهره تلميذه بطرس، يعلن المسيح: “من أراد أن يتبعني فلينكر نفسه ويحمل صليبه ويتبعني.” يسوع يكرر ذلك الأمر بعدة طرق في كل مرقس 8-10. رسالته بسيطة: اتباعي ليس طريقا نحو السلطة الأرضية بل طريق إنكار الذات والموت

لربما يعبر دايفيد هايوارد عن الأمر بأفضل طريقة في هذا الرسم الكرتوني. ونرى فيه الرجل في القسم على اليمين يصلي قائلا: يا رب، إجعلني أكثر مثل ابنك العزيز يسوع. ونراه على اليسار مصلوبا ويقول: أكلناها. فما هو الصليب إذا؟ هو المسيح يموت قبلنا لكي نتبعه إلى الموت. الصليب يذكرنا أننا مدعوين لنكون مثل يسوع في التخلي عن كل شيء من أجل الآخرين. هو يدعونا أن نمشي عكس حكمة المنطق ونختار الموت لكي نجد الحياة

الصليب هو المسيح يموت قبلنا لكي نغلب الموت مثله

قصة يسوع لا تنتهي عند الصليب. موته يأتي بالقيامة. وكما يكرر بولس بالكثير من الطريق وبشكل مستمر: “دُفنّا معه في المعمودية أي الموت، لكي نقوم كما أقيم المسيح من الموت بمجد الآب، ونمشي نحن أيضا في جدّة الحياة.” رومية 6: 4

كما يدعونا المسيح لنموت مثله نجد أنفسنا لأول مرة أحياء مثله أيضا، في المحبة لله والآخرين. محبة، مثل محبته، تحب كل الناس بغض النظر عن هويتهم، وتكون مستعدة أن تموت يوميا من أجلهم. هذه هي الحياة التي نحياها، حياة من الموت والقيامة اليومية

إلهنا، كما نراه من خلال المسيح، لا يشبه ملك أرضي. إنه، في طبيعته إله يخلي نفسه. تجسده وصليبه يؤكدان لنا أن هذه هي هويته. مايكل غورمان يقول في تعليقه على الترنيمة المشهورة في فيلبي 2: 6-11 في كتابه “المبيت في الإله المصلوب” التالي

مع أن المسيا يسوع كان في هيئة الله، وهو مركز يفهمه الناس على أنه فرصة لفرض القوة، تصرف بحسب شخصيته – بطريقة مفاجئة وضد مفهوم البشر القاصر عن من هو الله، ضد كل توقعاتنا ولكن بحسب ألوهيته الحقيقية – عندما أخلى نفسه وتواضع
