When my fiancé asked me last Wednesday how the teens’ club at our church went, I told her “great.” Now, what is it exactly that was great about that one club? Did we experience a revival and all the kids prayed the magical prayer and told Jesus to enter their hearts? Did one of the kids open up with us and share her life story? Did we manage to help them fix their broken relationships with their parents? No, no, and no. There was one reason really: more teens had come (23 rather than the usual 15…yaaay).
That got me thinking (I do that sometimes) about numbers. Let’s face it, I sometimes get the feeling that we are obsessed with numbers, me included. When someone asks us how our church is doing (what does that mean really?) we answer “good, it is full on Sunday” or “bad, nobody is coming on Sunday.” The visions we put for our churches involves planting new churches and increasing the number of members. The plans we put for events or special gatherings involve thinking about how to get more people to come (smile when they enter, give them a piece of cake, take their number…bam, they’re stuck).
Now, there is nothing wrong with inviting people to church, but I think there is something terribly wrong if we focus on increasing our numbers. Here is a list of reasons why:
Reason 1: Our founder, Christ, focused on people rather than numbers
As this cartoon from David Hayward shows, Jesus did not have many friends. In fact, he did not come to build an empire or to please people, he came, as he himself said many times, to save the lost and set free the captives (e.g. Luke 4:18). He came to show the Father’s love to us, a love that culminated in his death on the cross, alone. If we are to follow in his footsteps (which I assume we want to, given that we are named Christians), then we should focus on loving people rather than getting more people into our tribe.
Reason 2: Focusing on numbers turns people into numbers
If our vision is to have bigger churches then we inadvertently start focusing on that rather than loving and taking care of people. We want people to be “saved” and become members of the church and then move on to get other people. We easily grow frustrated with members of our church who are not “growing” properly. We want them to change, and change fast, so they too can participate in the “harvest.” Our vision becomes more important than people, and we are ready to let people go or drive them out if they do not commit to our way of seeing things. Somewhere along the line, we have lost view of loving God and loving our neighbour, for we seek to grow our own Kingdom.
Reason 3: Focusing on numbers leads to tribal conflicts
This is the natural outcome of a focus on numbers. Sometimes, as we work to make our church bigger, we grow jealous or angry of other churches. In the Evangelical community in Lebanon, many times a member gained in our church is a member lost from another church. In Mark 9: 38-41, the disciples complain to Jesus that other people, people who are not part of their group, are doing miracles in the name of Jesus. This passage comes in the context of the disciples arguing over who is greatest in the Kingdom, their refusal to let children come to Christ, and them following him on the way to Jerusalem without understanding why he is to die. Thus, the disciples want to have some kind of monopoly over Jesus, and to keep him with them. They want to “rule” with him. Interestingly, Jesus answers their complaints about the others who are doing miracles with this famous saying: “whoever is not against us is for us […] anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to Christ will certainly not lose his reward.” Wow! The Kingdom of God is open to all and all can serve the Kingdom, even if with a simple giving of a cup of cold water in the name of Jesus!
Reason 4: God can do wonders with a faithful few
One of the main motifs (recurring patterns or pictures) in the Bible is that of the faithful remnant. In many of the stories we read in the books of the Bible, God uses a few people to save the many. He chooses Noah out of all his generation, asks the one man Abraham to follow him, and saves a small people from captivity in Egypt. Jesus has a small group of 12 disciples, he himself dies and is resurrected opening the way to victory over death, and the last book of the Bible speaks of a small faithful remnant who stood firm in their faith. These are but a few examples out of many. I would think this tells us that faithfulness in working for the Kingdom of God is more important than building our own kingdoms and churches.
In the end, this is not a call to stop inviting people TO church. Rather, this is a call to BE the church to all people. Go out and meet every person wherever they are. Do not stand inside and invite people in, but be the hands and feet of Christ to your community, be them 1 or 1000.

To see Jesus in every face,

To be your light in the world.

مدونة رقم 2: لا تأتوا إلى كنيستا
عندما سألتني خطيبتي الأربعاء الماضية عن نادي المراهقين في كنيستنا، قلت لها أنه كان عظيما. لنتوقف لحظة ونفكر، ما الذي كان عظيما؟ هل اختبرنا نهضة وصلى كل الأولاد الصلاة السحرية ودخل يسوع إلى قلوبهم؟ هل شارك معنا أحد الأولاد قصة حياته؟ هل أصلحنا أحد العلاقات المكسورة بين أحد الأولاد وأهلهم؟ كلا، وكلا، وكلا. السبب الوحيد الذي دفعني لأقول أن النادي كان عظيما هو أن عدد المراهقين زاد هذه المرة…كنا 15 وأصبحنا 23، يا للفرحة
ودفعني هذا الموقف للتفكير بالأرقام…وأحيطكم علما أنني أفكر أحيانا. أحس في بعض الأحيان أننا مهووسين بالأرقام. عندما يسألنا أحدهم عن حال كنيستنا، وهو سؤال لا أفهم معناه الحقيقي، نرد بالقول “الإجتماع رائع لأنك لا تجد مكانا فارغا نهار الأحد” أو نقول “حال الكنيسة سيء لأن لا حضور كثيف نهار الأحد،” ناهيك عن الرؤى والأهداف التي نضعها حول زرع كنائس جديدة وزيادة الأعضاء. وعندما نضع خطط حفلات أو نشاطات نفكر بكيفية إقناع الناس على المجيئ لعندنا، وعادة ما نبتسم عدما يدخلون ونعطيهم قطعة حلوى ونأخذ رقم هاتفهم…لقد علقوا في شباكنا
أنا لا أقول أنه من الخطأ أن ندعو الناس إلى كنيستنا، ولكنن أعتقد أننا نرتكب خطأ فادحا عندما نركز على زيادة أعدادنا. وإليكم الأسباب التالية
السبب الأول: مؤسسنا، المسيح، ركز على الناس وليس الأرقام
كما يظهر الرسم لدايفيد هايوارد أعلاه، لم يكن لدى المسيح الكثير من الأصدقاء. هو لم يأت ليبني امبراطورية أو ليرضي الناس، ولكنه أتى، كما قال هو في عدة مناسبات، ليخلص الضالين ويكسر قيد المأسورين…مثلا لوقا 4: 18. هو أتى ليرينا محبة الله الآب، محبّة تُوجت في موته على الصليب، وحيدا.إذا كنا نريد أن نتبع خطواته، وأظننا نريد ذلك كوننا نسمي أنفسنا مسيحيين، فيجب علينا أن نركز على محبة الناس بدل من أن نركز على ضم الناس إلى قبيلتنا
السبب الثاني: التركيز على الأرقام يحوّل الناس إلى أرقام
إذا كانت رؤيتنا هي أن تكون كنيستنا أكبر فسنركز على الهدف أكثر من تركيزنا على محبة الناس والعناية بهم. نريد أن “يخلص” الناس ويصبحوا أعضاءا في كنيستنا ويساعدونا ليضموا آخرين للكنيسة. ونصاب باليأس والخيبة عندما لا “ينموا” أعضاء كنيستنا. نريدهم أن يتغيروا بسرعة ليشاركوا في “الحصاد.” لقد أصبحت رؤيتنا أهم من الناس ونحن مستعدين أن نتخلى عن الناس أو نخلي سبيلهم من الكنيسة إذا لم يوافقونا الرأي في آرائنا ورؤيتنا. لقد فقدنا الرؤية الصحيحة والتي هي محبة الله ومحبة القريب في هذه الضجة والفوضى، وأصبحنا نبني ممالكنا الخاصة
السبب الثالث: التركيز على الأرقام يؤدي إلى معارك قبلية
هذه نتيجة طبيعية للتركيز على الأرقام. عندما نعمل لتكبير كنيستنا قد نغضب أونحسد الكنائس لأخرى. في المجتمع الإنجيلي في لبنان عادة ما يكون العضو الذي تكسبه كنيستنا عضوا تخسره كنيسة أخرى. في مرقس 9: 38-41 التلاميذ يتذمرون ليسوع من ناس آخرين ليسا جزءا من مجموعهم ولكن يعملون العجائب بإسم يسوع. يأتي هذا المقطع في سياق قصص حول نقاش التلاميذ حول من هو الأعظم بينهم، رفضهم أن يأتي الأطفال ليروا يسوع، واتباعهم يسوع على الطريق نحو أورشليم وهم غير فاهمين حقيقة موته الذي يقرب. إذا التلاميذ يريدون أن يكونوا الوحيدين الذين يمتلكون يسوع. يريدون أن “يملكوا” معه. ولكن يسوع يخالف توقعاتهم الأنانية ويجاوب تذمرهم من الناس الذين يجرون عجائب بإسمه قائلا: “إن من ليس ضدنا فهو معنا. فإن من سقاكم كأس ماء بإسمي…إن مكافأته لن تضيع.” يا للعجب! ملكوت اله مفتوح للجميع وكل بإمكانه أن يخدم الملكوت، وحتى هذا العمل البسيط الذي هو إعطاء كأس ماء بارد بإسم يسوع هو خدمة للملكوت
السبب الرابع: الله يصنع المعجزات بعدد قليل من الأتقياء
أحد أكثر الصور المتكررة في الكتاب المقدس هي صورة البقية التقية. في الكثير من القصص الموجودة في كتب الكتاب المقدس الله يستخدم عدد قليل من الناس لينقذ كثيرين. هو اختار نوح من بين كل جيله وطلب من ابراهيم أن يمشي معه وخلص شعب صغير من العبودية من مصر. يسوع كون مجموعة تلاميذ عددهم12 وهو بنفسه مات وقام ليفتح طريق النصر على الموت. وآخر كتب في الكتاب المقدس يتكلم عن بقية تقية بقية ثابتة في إيمانها. هذه أمثلة قليلة. أعتقد أن هذه الصورة تخبرنا أن أمانتا في العمل من أجل ملكوت الله هي أهم من العمل في بناء ملكوتنا وكنائسنا الشخصية
في النهاية، هذه ليست دعوة لكي نتوقف عن دعوة الناس إلى كنيستنا. بل هذه دعوة لكي نكون الكنيسة لكل الناس. لنذهب ونلتقي بالناس. دعونا لا نقف في الداخل وندعو الناس للدخول بل لنكون أيادي وأرجل يسوع في مجتمعنا، ولو كان عدد الناس 1 أو 1000
