Shithole Kingdom – ملكوت القرف

I read a book last month about Jesus written by a Muslim scholar. He quotes the following teaching of Jesus as proof that the Jesus we see in the gospels is not authentic:

If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters yes, even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Luke 14:26

He argues that a real prophet would not say these things.

Society in general has a certain image of Jesus. Jesus is kind. Jesus is merciful. Jesus is loving. Jesus is a teddy bear that I hug at night to feel safe.

Yes, Jesus might be all of the above (even the teddy bear), but if you read his teachings you realize that he does not call us into a safe and easy life. He does not call us only into friendship with God. No! He calls us to worship God.

What is worship? As we saw in the verse above, worship is COMPLETE obedience to God and trust in him alone. Worship means seeking to be more like Jesus day after day!

You see, Jesus ushered in the kingdom of God. This kingdom has some amazing values. Kingdom values teach us to love our enemy. Kingdom values teach us to share our money and possessions with those who have less than us. Kingdom values teach us to be faithful in our marriages and relationships. Kingdom values teach us to pray for those who hate us and bless those who curse us.

The problem is that our society is not run by kingdom values. Actually, if you look closely, it is mostly run on anti-Kingdom values. So, if you want to be part of the kingdom of God which Jesus is leading you will have to butt heads with society more often than not.

What do we see of today’s Christianity?

Now you think I will start talking here about drinking, drugs, and immorality…Although those are all valid points to make, I won’t make them here. Let the pastors do that on Sunday.

What do we see of today’s Christianity?

I see Christians who are loyal to their family, tribe, race, political party, and country more than their loyalty to Christ and his kingdom!

President Trump exhibits blatant racism. What does the majority of the white church in the US do? Nothing. Even more yet, some continue to defend his words.

Our Christian (at least in name) political leaders in Lebanon daily exhibit blatant racism towards the Syrian refugees. What does the majority of the church in Lebanon do? Nothing. Even more yet, some echo this racist rhetoric.

Millions of Christians around the world blindly support the state of Israel as it continues to savagely oppress the Palestinians just because most of the Palestinians are Muslims, and we can care less about them (and because of some sick theology…but that will have to wait).

Is history bound to repeat itself?

Is the church bound to defend Hitler, slavery, oppressive regimes, sexual abuse, the oppression of women, and all kinds of corruption?

Yes, I know, there were beautiful Jesus-like Christians throughout history who exhibited and defended the values of the Kingdom of God against all odds. I know that the church instilled in society some amazing values.

But for every “good” Christian out there we bump into five that show more loyalty to tribe and race and money than they show loyalty to the way of Christ.

I was deeply saddened to see hundreds of my American friends (and Lebanese friends who think they are American) who constantly attack all political, religious, and social figures who oppose their agenda and who constantly defend Trump suddenly grow silent on social media after the president mocked the poor nations of this world.

I was also deeply overjoyed to see tens of my American friends issue messages of love and solidarity with the poor nations of this world.

Which kingdom do I follow?

The shithole one or the Jesus one?

Let us stand in prayer:

Lord,

Help us die,

Of the things that make us angry,

Help us live,

For the things that make you smile.

ملكوت القرف

قرأت الشهر الماضي كتاب  من عالم مسلم. يقتبس التعليم التالي من يسوع ويستخدمه ليبرهن أن المسيح الذي نراه في الإنجيل ليس حقيقيا

ان كان احد ياتي الي ولا يبغض اباه وامه وامراته واولاده واخوته واخواته حتى نفسه ايضا فلا يقدر ان يكون لي تلميذا. لوقا 14: 26

يحاجج أن نبي حقيقي لن يقول هكذا عبارة

المجتمع بشكل عام لديه صورة معينة عن يسوع. يسوع حنون. يسوع رحوم. يسوع محب. يسوع مثل الدبدوب تعانقه وأنت نائم لتشعر بالأمان

نعم، يسوع كل هذه الأشياء (حتى الدبدوب) ولكن إن قرأت تعاليمه تدرك أنه لا يدعوك إلى حياة آمنة وسهلة. لا يدعوك فقط ليكون لك صداقة مع الله بل يدعوك بالأحرى لتعبد الله!

ما هي العبادة؟ كما رأينا في الآية أعلاه العبادة هي الطاعة الكاملة والثقة الوحيدة في الله. العبادة تعني أن أسعى كل يوم لأشبه يسوع أكثر

المسيح يا عزيزي أعلن بدء ملكوت الله. ولدى هذا الملكوت بعض القيم المذهلة. قيم الملكوت تعلمنا أن نحب الأعداء. قيم الملكوت تعلمنا أن نشارك أموالنا ومقتنياتنا مع من يمتلكون أقل منا. قيم الملكوت تعلمنا الأمانة في الزواج والعلاقات. قيم الملكوت تعلمنا أن نصلي من أجل من يكرهنا ونبارك من يلعننا

المشكلة أن مجتمعنا لا يسير على قيم الملكوت. بل بالعكس هو يسير على قيم تكاد تكون مضادة لقيم الملكوت. إذا، إن أردت أن تكون جزء من ملكوت الله الذي يقوده يسوع فعليك أن تتصادم مع المجتمع في كثير من الأحيان

ماذا نرى في المسيحية اليوم؟

تعتقد الأن أنني سأتحدث عن شرب الكحول والمخدرات وانحلال الأخلاق. هذه كلها نقاط صائبة. ولكنني لن أتكلم عنها هنا. سأتركها للرعاة يوم الأحد

ماذا نرى في المسيحية اليوم؟

نرى مسيحيين يدينون بالولاء للعائلة والقبيلة والعرق والحزب والوطن أكثر من ولائهم للمسيح وملكوته!

أظهر الرئيس ترامب تمييز عنصري فاجر. ماذا فعلت أغلبية الكنيسة البيضاء في الولايات المتحدة الإمبريالية؟ لا شيء. لا بل دافع البعض عن كلامه

زعماؤنا المسيحيين (بالإسم على الأقل) يقومون يوميا بالتهجم العنصري على اللاجئين السوريين. ماذا تفعل أغلبية الكنيسة في لبنان؟ لا شيء. لا بل يقوم البعض بترداد الكلام المسيء

ملايين المسيحيين حول العالم يؤيدون إسرائيل بدون وعي بينما يستمر الكيان الصهيوني بنهجه الظالم والعنيف تجاه الفلسطينيون فقط لأن أغلبية الشعب الفلسطيني مسلمين وبسبب لاهوت مريض سنتناوله في أحد الأيام المقبلة

هل محتم على التاريخ أن يكرر نفسه؟

هل يتحتم على الكنيسة أن تؤيد هيتلر والعبودية والأنظمة الظالمة والإعتداء الجنسي والتمييز ضد المرأة وكل انواع الفساد؟

نعم، أعرف أنه يوجد كثير من أتباع المسيح المذهلين خلال التاريخ الذين دافعوا عن قيم ملكوت الله ضد كل الصعاب. أعرف أن الكنيسة قدمت كثير من القيم الرائعة للمجتمع

ولكن بوجه كل مسيحي “جيد” تجد خمس مسيحيين يدينون بالولاء للقبيلة أو العرق أو المال أكثر من ولائهم لطريق المسيح

حزنت كثيرا عندما رأيت مئات من أصدقائي الأمريكيين (وبعض أصدقائي اللبنانيين الذين يعتقدون أنهم أمريكيين) والذين باستمرار يتهجمون على كل الشخصيات السياسية والدينية والإجتماعية التي تعاكس أجندتهم والذين باستمرار يدافعون عن ترامب، رأيتهم صامتون على وسائل التواصل الإجتماعي بعد أن هزء ترامب من البلاد الفقيرة في العالم

وأيضا فرحت كثيرا بعشرات أصدقائي الأمريكيين الذين أصدروا رسائل حب ودعم لبلدان العالم الفقيرة

أي ملكوت تتبع؟

ملكوت القرف أو ملكوت يسوع؟

يا رب

ساعدنا لنموت

عن الأمور التي تغضبنا

وساعدنا لنحيا

من أجل الأمور التي تجعلك تبتسم

Is the Syrian the Enemy? هل السوري هووي العدو؟

Many of the Lebanese, generally speaking, have not been good friends with Syrians over the past 30 years. For many Lebanese, Syria is the occupier who controlled Lebanon with its military up to 2005.

Since 2011, and as approximately 2 million Syrian refugees, most of them Muslim, made their way to Lebanon (with a population of 4.5 million), the Lebanese generally, and the Christian population particularly, have kept calling for the return of the Syrians to Syria.

Hatred is on the rise. You can feel it as you read the signs in the Lebanese towns that ban Syrians from walking the streets after 8:00 pm. You can feel it as you stroll through Facebook and come across Lebanese videos and pages cursing the Syrians. You can feel it as you sip coffee in a house visit and the talk invariably returns to how the Syrians are taking all the jobs.

It is true that the huge population of refugees has had a negative impact on the Lebanese economy and infrastructure. I have also previously argued that their presence is a blessing to Lebanon.

The question becomes: is the Syrian refugee in Lebanon truly the enemy of the Lebanese people?

I think not.

Who is the enemy then?

The enemy is the many countries funding and encouraging the war in Syria.

The enemy is our failed government(s) which, even before the coming of the Syrians to Lebanon, was unable to give us 24/7 electricity, reliable internet, good roads, acceptable wages, and most other services.

The enemy is religious fundamentalism and dictatorships that refuse the existence of the other.

The enemy is hate, racism, and the refusal to put ourselves in other people’s shoes.

But this is not a post to rant about the rise of hate in Lebanon. Nor is this a post to convince the haters to love the refugees. That is beyond my power.

This is a post to encourage the other 50% (or perhaps more?), those Lebanese people, most of them poor, who are refusing to join the wave of hate against the Syrians.

To them, I say, as the hate rises so let our love rise!

When in a visit and people start to bash the Syrians. Listen, acknowledge their anger, and then put forth a different opinion. Be the voice of the voiceless.

When you witness abuse from your local police against Syrians, speak up.

If you meet refugees in your building, on the street, or beside your work, give them a smile. Offer your financial support. It is illegal to offer work for Syrians, but it is not illegal to offer food, clothes, money, or any kind of help.

Volunteer your time in an NGO or religious institution helping the refugees.

Become friends with a refugee family. It is almost impossible to hate your friends.

 

Whatever we do, let us not allow the voice of hatred to have the final say.

مدونة #66: هل السوري هووي العدو؟

كتير من اللبنانيين، بشكل عام، ما كانو اصحاب مع السوريين هالـ30 سنة الماضية. لكتير من اللبنانيين، سوريا هيي المحتل يللي سيطر على لبنان عسكريا لحديت سنة 2005

من سنة 2011، ومع مجيء حوالي 2 مليون لاجئ سوري، معظمن مسلمين، على لبنان (يللي سكانو عددن 4 ونص مليون نسمة)، اللبنانيين بشكل عام، والمسيحيين بشكل خاص، ضلو يطالبو بعودة السوريين لسوريا

الكره عم يزداد. فيك تحس بالكره لما تقرا اليافطات بالمدن والبلدات يللي بتمنع تجول السوريين بعد الساعة 8 بالليل. بتحس بالكره لما تقضي وقت على فايسبوك وتشوف مقاطع الفيديو والصفحات اللبنانية يللي عم تسب السوريين. بتحس بالكره انتا وعم تشرب قهوة بزيارة ويضل الحديث يرجع للسوريين وكيف اخدو كل الشغل

مظبوط انو العدد الضخم من النازحين أثر سلبا على الاقتصاد والبنى التحتية اللبنانية. وانا كمان بالماضي حاججت انو الوجود السوري هووي بركة للبنان

السؤال هووي: هلى النازح السوري بلبنان هو عنجد عدو اللبنانيين؟

مين لكان العدو؟

العدو هووي البلدان يللي عم تدعم وتشجع الحرب بسوريا

العدو هووي حكومتنا الفاشلة يللي من قبل النزوح السوري ما كانت عم تعطينا كهربا، أو مي، او انترنت سريعة، أو طرقات منيح، أو معاشات مقبولة، أو اي خدمات تانية

لما تلتقي بنازح ببنايتك، الطريق، او حد شغلك، عطي بسمة. قدم مساعدة مادية. ممنوع بالقانون انك تشغّل السوري بس مش ممنوع انك تقدم اكل، تياب، مصاري، أو أي مساعدة اخرى

تبرع بوقتك بجمعية أو مؤسسة دينية عم تساعد النازحين

كوّن صداقة مع عيلة سورية. صعبة تكره اصدقاءك

لو شو ما عملت، ما تخلي صوت الكره يحكي آخر كلمة

Je suis Selpher Wandia – أنا سيلفر وانديا

This is Selpher Wandia, a 21-year old student who had a dream to become a teacher.She was killed, along with at least 147 others (the numbers are rising) last week in the Kenyan university, Garissa by a religious terrorist group. The terrorists entered the university and shot the defenseless students.

A very similar incident happened a while ago in France. It was a religious terrorist group. They attacked innocent people while they were going on with their lives. 12 people were killed. However, the difference was massive. Leaders of the world gathered in Paris to show solidarity. Our usually dormant Arab leaders ran as fast as they could to France to show their support. People all over the internet starting writing the famous slogan “Je suis Charlie” in support of the victims from the attack on the satirical magazine.

Now, I am all for freedom of speech and showing solidarity. However, why didn’t the world, leaders and people, move in the same solidarity to the 147+ students killed in Kenya last week?

Let us be forward with each other people. The people killed in Paris were Europeans, most of them were blond, and they probably showered once per week.
The people killed in Kenya were black and are part of an African country. End of story.

So today, I thought I would stand with Selpher Wandia. I have never met her. My blog will not bring her back from the dead. But it says, we remember, and we see the victims of terror all over the world.
We are (and not “I am,” we are Arabs and not westerners with their acute individuality)….

We are Hussam al-Shaikh, the Palestinian boy held unjustly in Israeli prisons since Christmas.

We are Roqaya Mounzer, the Lebanese woman murdered by her abusive husband last year.

We are Walter Lamer Scott, a black man killed by a white policeman in the US.

We are the hundreds of thousands of nameless Syrians being killed for four years.

We are the Armenians struggling for a 100 years to seek justice for our murdered people.

We are the countless people of the world dying daily from hunger while the rich throw their food to the dogs.

We are every person who is oppressed.

We are humans.

Let us stand in prayer:

Lord,

Forgive us,

We stand alone

And fall.

Give us to stand together

مدونة #11: أنا سيلفر وانديا

هذه سيلفر وانديا. طالبة جامعة عمرها 21 سنة وكان حلمها أن تصبح معلمة

تم قتلها مع على الأقل 147 طالب آخر (الأرقام ترتفع) الأسبوع الماضي في جامعة غاريسا في كينيا على يد جماعة دينية إرهابية متطرفة. دخل الإرهابيون الجامعة وقتلوا  الطلاب الأبرياء

حصلت حادثة مشابهة قل فترة في فرنسا. أيضا كان هناك مجموعة إدينية متطرفة وإرهابية. هاجموا أناس أبرياء كانوا يقومون بأعمالهم اليومية. قتل 12 شخص. ولكن الفرق بين الحادثتين كان شاسع. تهافت رؤساء العالم إلى باريس ليعبروا عن تضامنهم مع الضحايا. ورؤسائنا لعرب، الذين عادة ما يغيبون عن السمع إلا عندما يعلنون الحرب، ركضوا إلى فرنسا ليعبروا عن دعمهم. والناس حول العالم ملؤوا الإنترنت بالشعار الشهير “أنا شارلي” تضامنا مع ضحايا المجلة الساخرة

انا أؤيد حرية التعبير وكذلك التضامن مع الضحايا. ولكن لما لم يتحرك العالم، رؤساء وشعوب، للتضامن مع 147+ طلاب المقتولين في كينيا الأسبوع الماضي؟

دعونا نكون صريحين مع بعضنا البعض. الأشخاص الذين قتلوا في باريس كانوا أوروبيين، ومعظمهم ذو البشرة البيضاء، كما ويستحمون مرة في الأسبوع

الأشخاص الذين قتلوا في كينيا كانت بشرتهم سوداء كما وينتمون لبلد إفريقي. انتهت القصة

لذا اليوم، قررت أن أقف مع سيلفر وانديا. لم ألتق بها في حياتي. ومدونتي لن تعيدها للحياة. ولكنها تقول، نحن نتذكر، ونحن نرى ضحايا الإرهاب في كل العالم

نحن – وليس أنا، فنحن عرب ولا نعاني من مرض الفردية الغربي

نحن حسام الشيخ، الفتى الفلسطيني المعتقل ظلما في السجون الإسرائيلية منذ عيد الميلاد

نحن رقية منذر، المرأة اللبنانية التي قتلها زوجها المعتدي السنة الماضية

 نحن والتر سكوت، الرجل الاسود الذي قتله الشرطي الأبيض في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية

نحن مئات الآلاف من السوريين المجهولين الذين يقتلون منذ 4 سنوات

نحن الأرمن الذين نكافح لـ100 سنة من أجل العدالة لأجدادنا المذبوحين

نحن الناس الغير معدودين من الكثرة الذين نموت يوميا من الجوع بينما الأغنياء يرمون طعامهم للكلاب

نحن كل شخص مظلوم

نحن بشر

دعونا نقف لنصلي

يا رب

 فنحن نقف في وحدة ضد بعض
