Do the Lebanese have Honour? هل يمتلك اللبنانيون الشرف؟

On April 1, Saudi-owned newspaper Asharq al-Awsat (the Middle East) published a cartoon which showed the Lebanese flag with the word “the Lebanese state” in the middle, and the title, April Fools (in Arabic it is “the lie of April”).

Obviously, as most of you know, things have not been going well lately between Lebanon and Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia is angry with the Lebanese party, Hezbollah, who are embroiled in some serious trash talk with KSA. Saudi Arabia has retaliated by firing some Lebanese working there, freezing a grant for the Lebanese army (a grant, mind you, that we had been patiently waiting for to arrive for over two years), and among other things, publishing the cartoon depicted above.

Now, just to be clear, I do not intend in any way to defend Saudi Arabia. I am not a fan of the regime over there, and not because I am Shia or a Christian and they are Sunni. No, I am not a fan of their regime because it is one more fundamentalist Arab dictatorship that breeds violence towards people who dare differ with the authorities and oppression towards women!

That being said, I was rather angered by the reaction of many Lebanese people. Once the cartoon was published, there was a tremendous backlash on social media. Moreover, some Lebanese activists “raided” (seems like they have been playing a lot of Clash Royale lately) the offices of Asharq Al-Awsat and threw the papers covering the desks in the air (oooooh…dangerous).

Thus our honour as Lebanese people was saved…NOT!

For some reason I did not feel satisfied and happy with the angry backlash of the Lebanese society against this cartoon. Here is why:

First and foremost, the cartoon is right!! Our country is a lie! We live in country ruled by fools and we are fools for voting for them! It is true. Even if it is Saudi Arabia saying it, Lebanon is a mess. We have had garbage all over the streets for over 8 months now, and our genius government came up with the solution and it was to throw it beside the sea and cover it with sand (basically the favourite activity of a 3-year old in the public playground). We rank among the top countries in corruption:

Our wheat is cancerous, our electricity is non-existent, our rights to vote are stolen, our ministers are burglars, our internet is slow (that is the greatest sin of all), our women are half-citizens, our roads are jungles, our jungles are fading, and our greatest past-time as a nation is to smoke a pile of tobacco placed over a stick standing in a container of boiling water!

Yet, we are angry and our emotions are moved by a caricature that dares insults our blessed country. Our honour is shamed and we must regain it by cursing Saudi Arabia on the internet. Then we can go and smoke Nargile in peace on the balcony while we breathe in the sweet smell of garbage in the state of Lebanon that is not a lie.

Second, our reaction proved the cartoon right. If we have anything as a people, we have freedom of speech. Even that is being slowly snuffed out. If we have anything left to be proud of it is that we have theatre, novels, poetry, and journalism that are not afraid to say the truth. But you see, that is the funny thing about freedom of speech, it works both ways. You have freedom to speak, and then others have freedom to speak against you. Thus, Asharq Al-Awsat has the freedom to publish what they want against Lebanon.

I found it funny that those activists who entered their offices to threaten them were held by the police a few months back as they demonstrated and tried to start a constructive revolution in this jungle of a country. They experienced oppression and someone shouting at them to shut-up. Now they are doing it to others. Who decides who can speak?

Have we forgotten “Je suis Charlie?” Have we forgotten how journalists were gunned down in their offices for a mere drawing? Do we believe in the freedom of the press and the freedom of expression?

Have we forgotten how Salah Mahdi Noureddine was attacked in Beirut when he raised a banner bearing a slogan accusing Nabih Berri, the head of Parliament, of corruption? The supporters of Berri threatened the man and beat him up simply because he had dared insult the god they worship.

Do the Lebanese have honour?

Yes, we do.

We have honour because we get out of our beds every morning, go through murderous traffic, work 2-3 jobs to pay the ever-increasing bills, and drop dead at night to sleep with the smell of garbage.

We have honour because we have chosen to stay here and survive.

We have honour when we refuse to bow down and worship the Lebanese militia leaders who fought during the civil war and have been ruling us ever since 1990.

We have honour when we recycle our trash at home, in school, and at work.

We have honour when we demonstrate and stand in the face of our corrupt politicians.

We have honour when we refuse to believe that my party leader is always right and the rest are all liars.

We have honour when we create art, excel in sports, stop at a red light, and share our houses with the refugees.

But we have no honour when we shout out in anger against the simple truth found in a cartoon, a truth that is and should haunt us until things get better.

We live in a country where order and wise leadership are a lie, and corruption and being ruled by war criminals is the truth. Face it. Do not get used to it. Fight it.

Let us stand in prayer:

Lord,

We are tired.

How many more days

Till we have a country?

How many more nights

Till we awake?

الكاريكاتور الذي نشرته الصحيفة في 1 نيسان

 

في 1 نيسان قامت صحيفة الشرق الأوسط السعودية بنشر كاريكاتور يهزئ بلبنان حيث نرى علم لبنان ومكتوب بداخله “دولة لبنان” والعنوان هو كذبة نيسان

بالطبع، كما يعرف معظمكم، الأمور ليست على أفضل حال في هذه الأيام بين لبنان والسعودية. السعودية غاضبة من حزب الله اللبناني الذي هو منغمس في حملة انتقاد قاسية ضد المملكة. السعودية ردت من خلال طرد بعض الموظفين اللبنانيين لديها، كما وتجميد هبة للجيش اللبناني (هبة بقينا ننتظرها أكثر من سنتين)، ومن ضمن أمور أخرى، نشر هذا الكاريكتور الموجود أعلاه

من أجل التوضيح، أنا لست أدافع عن السعودية. لست من عشاق السعودية ولا النظام الحاكم هناك، وذلك ليس لأنني شيعي أو مسيحي وهم من أهل السنة. كلا، بل أنا لست من مؤيدي نظام آلا سعود لأنه صورة نمطية عن باقي الأنظمة العربية الرجعية والأصولية التي تنمّي العنف ضد من يعترض على أفكارها كما وتقمع النساء

ولكنني شعرت بالغضب من ردة فعل اللبنانيين. بعد أن تم نشر الكاريكاتور كانت هناك ردة فعل غاضبة على مواقع التواصل الإجتماعي. كما و”اجتاح” (يبدو أنهم يلعبون لعبة البوليس والحرامية تحت البناية كثيرا هذه الأيام) بعض الناشطين اللبنانيين مكاتب الشرق الأوسط في بيروت وبعثروا الأوراق في الهواء – يا ويلاه على الغضب

وهكذا تمة صيانة شرف الشعب اللبناني العظيم…أو لا

لسبب ما لم أشعر بالرضا أو الفرح من ردة فعل اللبنانيين الغاضبة على هذا الكاريكاتور. وهذه هي أسبابي

أولا، الكاريكاتور على حقّ! بلدنا كذبة! نحن نعيش في بلد يحكمه الأغبياء ونحن أغبياء لأننا صوتنا لهم! هذه حقيقة. حتى ولو قالتها السعودية، يبقى الواقع هو أن لبنان مهزلة في هذا الوقت. كان لدينا زبالة على الطرقات لأكثر من 8 أشهر، ومن ثم أتت حكومتنا العبقرية واقترحت الحل وكان هذا الحل المنتظرهو أن تُرمى الزبالة بجانب البحر وتُغطّى بالرمل (وهذه لعبة الأطفال المفضلة في الحدائق العامة – هذا إن وجدت حديقة عامة). نحن من اكثر الدول الفاسدة في العالم أجمع

قمحنا مسرطن، كهرباؤنا غير موجودة، حقوقنا بالتصويت مسروقة، وزراؤنا لصوص، الإنترنت (إنترنتنا؟؟) بطيئ (وهذه جريمة العصر يا إخوة وأخوات)، نساؤنا نصف مواطنات، طرقاتنا غابات، وغاباتنا تختفي، ووسيلتنا المفضلة للتسلية كشعب هي في تدخين كومة من التبغ موضوعة على عصا يغطي قاعدتها وعاء من الماء المغلي

ولكننا نغضب وتتحرك مشاعرنا بسبب كاريكاتور تجرأ وأهان بلدنا المبارك لبنان. ونشعر أن شرفنا قد أهين ونستعيده من خلال لعن وسبّ السعودية على الإنترنت. ومن ثم نذهب لندخن الأرجيلة على البلكون بينما نتنشق رائحة الزبالة العطرة في بلدنا لبنان الذي ليس كذبة

ثانيا، ردة فعلنا برهنت حقيقة الكاريكاتور. ماذا بقي لدينا كشعب غير حرية التعبير؟ وحتى هذه الحرية يتم طمسها بهدوء. إذا كان بقي لدينا شيئ لكي نكون فخورين به فهو أنه لدينا مسرح، وكتب، ودواوين شعر، وصحافة لا تخاف أن تقول الحقيقة. ولكن، الأمر المضحك يا أصدقائي بحرية التعبير هو أنها تتحرك في الإتجاهين. أنت لديك الحرية بالتعبير والآخر أيضا لديه الحرية بالتعبير ضدك. وهكذا من حق صحيفة الشرق الأوسط أن تنشر ما تريد

وجدت أن الأمر يدعو للسخرية بأن التاشطين الذين دخلوا مكتب الصحيفة وهددوا العاملين فيها هم أنفسهم تم احتجازهم من قبل الشرطة قبل بضعة أشهر عندما كانوا يتظاهرون ويحاولون أن يبدأوا بثورة بنّاءة. هم اختبروا القمع وأن يصرخ أحد عليهم ليصمتوا وها هم يعملون نفس الشيئ للآخرين؟ من يقرر من يستطيع أن يتكلم؟

وهل نسينا “أنا شارلي؟” هل نسينا الصحفيين الذين قُتلوا في مكاتبهم بسبب بضعة رسومات؟ هل نؤمن حقا بحرية الصحافة وحرية التعبير؟

وهل نسينا صلاح مهدي نورالدين الذي ضُرب في بيروت عندما رفع شعار يتهم فيه نبيه بري، رئيس النواب، بالفساد؟ ومؤيدو بري هددوا الرجل وضربوه فقط لأنه أهان الإله الذي يعبدوه

هل  يمتلك اللبنانيون الشرف؟

نعم، لدينا شرف

لدينا شرف عندما نترك بيوتنا في الصباح ونقود سياراتنا في الزحمة القاتلة، ونعمل وظيفتين أو ثلاثة لنوفي ديوننا المتزايدة، ونعود ليلا لننام على رائحة الزبالة

لدينا شرف عندما نختار أن نبقى هنا ونعيش

لدينا شرف عندما نرفض أن نعبد أمراء الميليشيات اللبنانية الذين حاربوا في الحرب الأهلية وها هم يحكموننا منذ 1990

لدينا شرف عندما نعيد تدوير القمامة في بيوتنا ومدارسنا وأشغالنا

لدينا شرف عندما نتظاهر ونقف في وجه قمع وظلم وفساد السياسيين

لدينا شرف عندما نرفض أن نؤمن بأن مسؤول حزبي دائما على حق والآخرين دائما على خطأ

لدين شرف عندما نخلق الفن، ونبدع في الرياضة، ونتوقف على الإشارة الحمراء، ونتشارك بيوتنا مع النازحين

A Commentary on Assaad Thebian’s Blasphemous Words – تعليق على كلمات أسعد ذبيان الكافرة

Assaad Thebian is one of the leaders of the You Stink movement that is organizing protests in Lebanon over corruption in general and the garbage crisis in particular.

Recently, many articles have surfaced which accuse him of blaspheming against Christ and religion. Some prominent lawyers have raised lawsuits against him accusing him of blasphemy (yes, you can do this in Lebanon). Many people have become angry with the whole movement because of the alleged blasphemy of Assaad Thebian.

I decided to read these blasphemies of Assaad Thebian. I will post them here and briefly comment on each. Come, read them with me, and let us see whether Assaad blasphemed or not.

Translation: “In this Christmas and while people are celebrating the birth of the son of God..I salute Satan the first rebel who refused to be ordered around..who refused to bow down to a creature of dust; to the only animal poetry that plans and takes pleasure in killing each other…”

Did Assaad Thebian blaspheme in this sentence? Not really. He called Jesus the son of God. Now the man wants to salute Satan as a rebel. That is not new. Much literature has been written on Satan as a rebel. Actually, his final comment on humans as being the only animals that take pleasure in killing each other is quite accurate.

Translation: “During this time of remembering the crucifixion and resurrection and the Jesus movies; We conclude this:

One of the luckiest characters in history is the criminal Barabas whom people chose to be set free in the place of Jesus.

One of the most cursed (he used a slang Lebanese term which means the middle finger) characters in history is Joseph who married Mary, whom God impregnated and gave a son ..he did not have after him neither offspring nor a male child..although he raised up Jesus and protected him by escaping with him for decades..

All respect for Joseph who worked without pay”

To begin with, the guy does know the story. I suspect more than some Christians do.

Secondly, he does hold a conservative Catholic view in Christianity and believes that Joseph did not have any children after Jesus.

Thirdly, he is partly right, it was tough being Joseph. I wouldn’t have wanted to be in his place.

Was his language polite? No. Did he blaspheme? He did not.

Translation: “Has anyone noticed how sexual Easter is? Eggs..rabbits..he (or it in Arabic) has risen indeed.”

You have to admit, this is a funny joke. Very inappropriate and dirty, yes, but funny.
Let’s be honest here, he is right. We have turned the festival which remembers the death and resurrection of Jesus into a festival of bunnies, eggs, and other silly stuff. We have brought this on ourselves. Again, I do not see any blasphemy here.

Translation: “‘It is important to note that St. Charbel performs an average of one miracle per minute around the world. He is the most widespread of the saints around the world, and not only among Lebanese saints.’ Local Lebanese newspaper

This guy seems more powerful than Jesus and God by far.

Hash tags: stop mocking people, stop doing business with religion…”

He does not believe that St. Charbel is performing miracles. Last time I checked, that was not blasphemy against God. If anything, he is telling people: you are placing St. Charbel above Jesus and God. I would agree with him on that. Yes, some Christians tend to worship St. Charbel above their worship to God.

So, there it is: Assaad Thebian did not blaspheme. He is not exactly very respectful of religion. But, do you know something, he is not forced to!

I, Nabil Habiby, respect religion, believe in God, and follow Christ. But that’s me. I cannot force others to think like me. I tell others about Jesus. I try to live and love everyone like Jesus. But I can’t force people to think like me.

This Lebanese revolution is about giving people, people and not religions, their rights. All people – Muslims, Christians, Jews, Atheists – deserve to live in a dignified manner.

Assaad Thebian did not blaspheme. However, even if he did, so what?

I, for one, will walk beside him in the streets and call out for dignity, freedom, and respect to all people. This is what my God whom I follow calls me to do.

To all those believers in God who were offended by the words of Assaad Thebian, how come you are not offended by our leaders who claim they know God but walk in evil and steal from the poor?

I have a feeling that perhaps if believers in God truly walked like God more people would take religion seriously.

Do you want to defend God? Then live in obedience to him. Do you want to show a good picture of God? Then love others. Do you want to be a follower of God? Then start with yourself, and leave the rest to him.

Let us stand in prayer:

Forgive us,

We want to defend you,

And forget to love you.

أسعد ذبيان أحد قادة حركة طلعت ريحتكم التي تنظم احتجاجات في لبنان ضد الفساد بشكل عام وأزمة النفايات بشكل خاص

في الأسابيع الماضية كتبت عدد من المجلات ضد أسعد ذبيان تتهمه بأنه يكفر ضد المسيح والدين. وبعض المحامين المعروفين رفعوا دعوة قضائية ضده بتهمة الكفر – نعم هناك قانون ضد الكفر في لبنان. كثير من الناس غضبوا من الحركة المطلبية بأسرها بسبب كفر أسعد ذبيان المزعوم

قررت أن أقرأ هذه الأقاويل الكافرة لأسعد ذبيان. سوف أنشرها هنا وأعلق بشكل مختصر على كلّ منها. تعالوا معي لنقرأ ونرى هلى كفر أسعد ذبيان أم لا؟

هل كفر أسعد ذبيان في هذه الجملة؟ ليس حقا. هو دعا يسوع ابن الله. الرجل يريد توجيه تحية لبليس كونه ثائر. هذا ليس امر جديد. هناك كثير من الأدب يتحدث عن ابليس كشخصية ثائرة. بالحقيقة، تعليقه الأخير أن الإنسان هو الحيوان الوحيد الذي يستلذ بقتل باقي البشر صحيح

أولا، الرجل يعرف قصة يسوع. وأنا لدي شك بأن بعض المسيحيين لا يعرفون القصة

ثانيا، يبدو أنه يؤمن بمعتقد مسيحي كاثوليكي محافظ بأن يوسف لم يكن لديه أولاد غير يسوع

ثالثا، هو محق بشكل جزئي. كان الأمر صعبا على يوسف. لا أود أن كون في مكانه

هل كانت لغته مؤدبة؟ كلا. هل كفر؟ كلا

عليكم أن تعترفوا بأن النكتة طريفة. نعم هي غير مناسبة ووسخة ولكنها طريفة. ودعونا نكون صادقين، هو على حق. لقد حولنا عيد لتذكّر موت وقيامة يسوع إلى عيد الارانب والبيض وأمور سخيفة أخرى. لقد جلبنا هذا الأمر على أنفسنا. ومرة أخرى، لا أرى أي كفر هنا

هو لا يؤمن أن القديس شربل يجري المعجزات. لا أعتقد أن هذا كفر ضد الله. هو بالأحرى يقول للناس: أنتم تضعون القديس شربل فوق المسيح والله. أنا أوافق معه على هذا الأمر. نعم بعض المسيحيين يميلون لعبادة القديس شربل فوق عبادتهم لله

إذا، إليكم اانتيجة: أسعد ذبيان لم يكفر. لم يحترم الأديان ولكن هل تعلمون ماذا؟ ليس عليه أن يحترمهم

أنا، نبيل حبيبي، أحترم الأديان وأؤمن بالله وأتبع المسيح. ولكن هذا أنا. لا أستطيع أن أفرض على الآخرين أن يفكروا مثلي. أخبرهم عن يسوع. أحاول أن أحيا وأحب الآخرين مثل يسوع. ولكنني لا أفرض على الناس أن يفكروا مثلي

هذه الثورة اللبنانية تتمحور حول الناس، الناس وليس الأديان، وحقوق الناس. كل الناس – المسلمين والمسيحيين واليهود والملحدين – يستحقون حياة كريمة

أسعد ذبيان لم يكفر. ولكنه لو كفر، فما لك وله؟

أنا، من جهتي، سأمشي بجانبه في الطرقات وأصرخ من أجل الكرامة والحرية والإحترام لكل الناس. هذا ما يدعوني إليه إلهي

وأقول لكل المؤمنين بالله الذين شعروا بالإهانة من كلمات أسعد ذبيان، الم تشعروا بالإهانة من قادتنا الذين يدعون الإيمان بالله ويسلكون بالشر ويسرقون الفقير؟

لدي شعور أنه لربما لو سلك المؤمنون بالله حقا مثل الله لزاد عدد الناس الذين يأخذون الدين على محمل الجد

هل تريد أن تدافع عن الله؟ عش بطاعة له. هل تريد أن تُظهر صورة جيدة عن الله؟ احب الآخرين. هل تريد أن تتبع الله؟ ابدأ بنفسك واترك الباقي له

دعونا نقف لنصلي

يا رب

سامحنا

نريد ن ندافع عنك

وقد نسينا أن نحبك

A Time to Rise – وقت الصعود

There is a time to be silent and a time to shout.

There is a time to sit and a time to act.

There is a time to stand and a time to march

There is a time to lie down, and a time to rise.

Now is the time to rise. Now is the only time. We have nothing left. We are living in garbage. There is no lower level left to reach. There is no deeper hole of corruption left to fall in.

A group of Lebanese people who do not belong to any party or religious sect walk the streets to demonstrate against the garbage crisis. The army and police forces reply with tear-bombs, live bullets, and sticks.

I, for one, will keep going down to the demonstrations. I, for one, will have hope that my children will live in a country and not a jungle.

Until that day, we must call things by their names. Our government are thieves. Our system is corrupt. Our politicians are losers. Our lives are worthless.

What will these protests do? Maybe nothing. The real question is can we remain silent?

No. I think it is time to act. I think it is time to rise.

لحين يأتي ذلك اليوم يجب أن نسمي الأمور بأسمائها. حكومتنا مجموعة لصوص. نظامنا فاسد. سياسيونا فاشلون. وحياتنا بلا قيمة

ماذا ستنجز هذه المظاهرات؟ ربما لا شيء. ولكن السؤال الحقيقي هو، هل بإمكاننا أن نبقى ساكتين؟

Garbage on the streets, Garbage in the church – زبالة على الطرقات، زبالة في الكنيسة

I hope you are not a tourist right now in my country. Actually, we are all wishing we were not living right now in Lebanon. There is garbage everywhere on the street as our politicians, who have already failed to hold elections, fix the electricity, make our streets safer, have failed once more in finding a suitable solution to garbage removal (I do remember our preschool teacher speaking about recycling back in 1994).

A demonstration was held yesterday at 5pm facing the Lebanese government building in the Down Town area, where the protesters each brought a garbage bag and then sorted the garbage into different recyclable materials in less than three minutes. The hope was that the minister of the environment (now the minister of garbage) was watching from the balcony. It seems his preschool teacher never taught him about recycling (note that I did not see them doing that, though they said they will on the Facebook group).

What has the church to do with this? Nothing, apparently. That is the problem. The church is doing nothing. Probably no church pastor mentioned this problem in her sermon this morning. Probably zero churches in Lebanon implement recycling or care about the environment. Probably zero churches participated in the protest last afternoon.
It is the same story over and over again.

Lebanese activists protest for women’s rights, walk in demonstrations to enact laws protecting women from abusing husbands, and the church is absent.

Lebanese activists walk the streets protesting the continuous absence of elections as the same people sit the parliament seats, and the church is absent.

The claim is always, that we do not want to get “political.”

So, we walk by the garbage in front of our church, shake our heads in sadness, and then walk into the church to sing and be happy.

Funny, because I remember a Jesus who “became like us.” The essence of the Christian story is God becoming man, Jesus Christ. Jesus stepped into our garbage-infested world, became like us, so he can make us like him. He worked to redeem all of society and not just to make individuals feel guilt-free and give them tickets to heaven. I remember a Jesus who did not separate politics, from society, from religion, but only saw PEOPLE in need of love and mercy. I remember a Jesus who was angry with the religious leaders (who were serving Rome, so he was making a “political statement”) for taking taxes from the poor, for protecting the law and forgetting people. I remember a Jesus who touched dead and sick people, all people, disregarding their race or gender or age. I remember a Jesus who created a community, a people with a mission to change all of society. I remember a Jesus who was active, going out, and not sitting in one place waiting for people to come to him.

The sad thing is, when a sexual matter comes up in society, the church raises its voice and shouts out with all power. When an environmental, social, human, or justice matter comes up in society, the church is silent.

N.T. Wright speaks of Jesus’ prayer to the Father, “thy will be done,” as starting to happen at Easter, when death was defeated. Jesus’ resurrection was an event that led into God’s new creation. God is doing something new. God’s will in heaven is being created on earth. Unfortunately, many times the church is not part of God’s will on earth. Wright continues,

“Hope is what you get when you suddenly realize that a different worldview is possible, a worldview in which the rich, the powerful, and the unscrupulous do not after all have the last word. The same worldview shift that is demanded by the resurrection of Jesus is the shift that will enable us to transform the world.”

The church is a community of love, but also a community with a mission of hope. We should not only speak up against any injustice in society. We should be the first to speak up and fight injustice in society. As we bring God’s future, God’ Kingdom, into today, we pray and wait for the day when God’s will and justice will break into our reality in a complete way, bringing ultimate justice and peace. As we wait for Jesus we are Jesus in society.
If we want to be a church that looks like Jesus then we should be incarnational like him. Thus, the sins of the world become the sins of the church. The problems of the world become the problems of the church. The sadness of the world becomes the sadness of the church. The garbage on the streets becomes the garbage in the church.

Could we ever see a headline in the local newspapers in the coming weeks saying: “The church of X cleans the garbage of the community,” or “the church of X starts a recycling program in the community”?  Or will we be content to be a church who prays to a God who wants justice and mercy “your will be done” on Sundays, while the garbage piles right outside our doors?

Let us stand in prayer:

Lord,

Your will be done,

Redeem all things.

Your will be done,

Make us redeemers of all things

Amen

مدونة #25: زبالة على الطرقات، زبالة في الكنيسة

أرجو ألا تكون سائحا في بلدي الآن. كلنا نرجو لو لم نكن نعيش في لبنان في هذه الفترة. هناك زبالة في كل مكان على الطرقات والسياسيون، مثل العادة، كما فشلوا في إقامة الإنتخابات أو تحسين الكهرباء أو جعل الطرقات أكثر أمنا، قد فشلوا مرة أخرى في إيجاد حل مناسب لمشكلة إزالة النفايات – أتذكر بوضوح معلمة الحضانة سنة 1994 تتكلم عن إعادة التدوير

تم إقامة مظاهرة البارحة الساعة 5 مساءا أمام السرايا الحكومي في وسط البلد حيث جلب كل متظاهر كيس زبالة وتم فرز الزبالة إلى مواد مختلفة تصلح لإعادة التدوير في أقل من 3 دقائق. والرجاء هو أن يكون وزير البيئة (أو وزير الزبالة) يشاهد من الشرفة لأنه يبدو أن معلمته أيام الحضانة لم تعلمه عن إعادة التدوير – ملاحظة: لم أشاهدهم يجرون الأمر ولكنهم قالوا أنهم سيفعلوا كذلك على صفحات التواصل الإجتماعي

وما شان الكنيسة في الأمر هذا؟ لا شيء، على ما يبدو. هذه هي المشكلة. الكنيسة لا تفعل شيئا. على الأرجح لم تذكر أي قسيسة المشكلة في عظتها هذا الصباح وعلى الأرجح لم تشارك أي كنيسة في المظاهرات البارحة. على الأرجح ولا كنيسة في لبنان تعيد التدوير أو تهتم بالبيئة. هي نفس القصة بشكل متكرر

والإدعاء دائما هو أننا لا نريد أن نتدخل في السياسة

إذا، نمشي بجانب الزبالة على الطرقات، نهز رؤوسنا حزنا، ومن ثم نمشي إلى داخل الكنيسة لنرنم ونفرح

أمر مضحك، لأنني أتذكر يسوع الذي “صار مثلنا.” جوهر القصة المسيحية هو أن الله أصبح رجلا، يسوع المسيح. يسوع دخل إلى عالمنا المليء بالزبالة وصار مثلنا لكي يجعلنا مثله. هو عمل ليفدي كل المجتمع وليس فقط ليحرر الأفراد من الشعور بالذنب وإعطائهم تذكرة للسماء. أتذكر يسوع الذي لم يفرق بين السياسة والمجتمع والدين بل رأى بشرا أمامه بحاجة للمحبة والرحمة. أتذكر يسوع الذي غضب من القادة الدينيين (الذين كانوا يخدمون روما – إذا كان يأخذ موقفا سياسيا) لأنهم يأخذون الضرائب من الفقراء ويحمون الناموس على حساب الناس. أتذكر يسوع الذي لمس الأموات والمرضى من الناس، كل الناس، بغض النظر عن عرقهم أو دينهم. أتذكر يسوع الذي خلق مجتمع من أناس عندهم إرسالية أن يغيروا كل المجتمع. أتذكر يسوع الذي كان يتحرك ويخرج ويجلس بين الناس وليس في مكان خاص به ليأتي الناس إليه

الأمر المحزن هو أنه عندما تطرأ مسألة تتعلق بالجنس ترى الكنيسة ترفع صوتها عاليا. ولكن عندما تكون مسألة بيئية أو اجتماعية أو انسانية أو متعلقة بالعدل ترى الكنيسة صامتة

ن. ت. رايت يتكلم عن صلاة يسوع للآب، “لتكن مشيئتك” ويقول أنها بدأت تحقق يوم القيامة عندما غلب يسوع الموت. قيامة يسوع هي حدث ابتدأ خليقة الله الجديدة. الله يعمل شيئا جديدا. مشيئة الله في السماء تُخلق على الأرض. للأسف، في الكثير من الأحيان، الكنيسة لا تكون جزء من مشيئة الله على الأرض. رايت يكمل ويقول

الرجاء هو عندما تدرك فجأة أنه بالإمكان تبني منظور مختلف للعالم، منظور يقول أن الأغنياء والأقوياء والغشاشين لن يقولوا الكلمة الأخيرة. هذه النقلة في المنظور بعد قيامة يسوع هي النقلة التي ستمكننا من تغيير العالم

الكنيسة هي مجتمع محبة ولكن هي أيضا مجتمع عنده إرسالية الرجاء. لا يجب فقط أن نتكلم ضد أي ظلم في المجتمع ولكن يجب أن نكون السباقين في التكلم ضد الظلم ومحاربته. وبينما نجلب مستقبل الله وملكوت الله إلى الحاضر نصلي وننتظر يوم تحقيق مشيئة وعدل الله بشكل كامل وشامل في واقعنا، عندما يجلب الله العدل والسلام. ونحن ننتظر يسوع نكون يسوع في المجتمع

إذا أردنا أن نكون كنيسة تشبه يسوع فيجب أن نتجسد مثله. فتصبح خطايا العالم خطايا الكنيسة ومشاكل العالم مشاكل الكنيسة وحزن العالم حزن الكنيسة وزبالة العالم زبالة الكنيسة

هل سنقرأ عنوان في الجرائد المحلية في الأسابيع القادمة يقول: كنيسة كذا وكذا تنظف الزبالة في المجتمع، أو كنيسة كذا وكذا تبدأ بحملة إعادة تدوير في المجتمع؟ أو هل سنرضى بأن نكون كنيسة تصلي لإله يريد العدل والرحمة “لتكن مشيئتك” نهار الأحد بينما تتراكم الزبالة أمام أبواب الكنيسة؟
