3 Movies you must Watch before you Die – ثلاثة أفلام عليك أن تشاهدها قبل أن تموت

I admit: I am not a movie person. So, if you really want to know which movies to watch before you die (may God give you health), you are better off talking with someone else. However, every now and then I find myself sitting before a screen (with popcorn) and watching a movie. Of the many I have watched these three have blown my mind away and changed the way I view life.

They may not have fancy cars, sexy ladies, or exploding things. But they have one thing in common: They place a finger firmly on the bleeding wound of humanity and press down till you scream out. They face you with the truth of the world. They make you think. If we need anything in this madness of the Middle East, we need people to think.

Now, to the three movies you most definitely should watch before you die (please feel free to suggest other similar movies in the comment section, I am sure there are more):

Hotel Rwanda

This is a story of the ethnic violence which occurred in Rwanda in 1994 as Hutu extremists killed almost a million Tutsi. It shows a hotel manager (Hutu) married to a Tutsi wife and caught in the midst of this bloody struggle. He has to make brave decisions, risking his life to try to save others.

This film forced me to once more face the issue of genocide and the horrors we are able to commit as humans. It is also filled with hope. One person can choose to act in mercy in the times of murderous madness. This film will make you cry, smile, feel inspired, and think.

La Vita e Bella (Life is Beautiful)

This is an Italian film depicting the struggles of the very comical Jewish character Guido as he tries to win the heart of a rich Italian girl. Later, he has to employ his comical skills in a Nazi concentration camp to make his young son believe they are part of a fun camp.

This film brought me to tears of laughter and sadness. It also ends with hope. Watching this film will remind you that life is beautiful when things are going well, and life is beautiful even in the midst of a life of imprisonment awaiting death.

Incendies

In this French and Arabic film, we follow a twin brother and sister (Simon and Jeanne Marwan) as they travel to the Middle East upon the request of their dead mother (Nawal) in her will to find their lost father and brother. It is set in the fictional city of Daresh yet the struggles that Nawal goes though there are very similar to Lebanon. The film moves back and forth between the travels of the twins and the history of the mother as the truth slowly unfolds.

I would rank this film as number one in my list of must-see movies. After it ends you sit in shock, trying to make your mind grasp what you have just seen and heard. This movie, more than any other, will help you see the ugliness of war and the never-ending power of love. If I had the power I would make all the people of the Middle East watch it!

I have been going on and on about justice for the past few blogs (the recent murders in Kenya and the Armenian Genocide). I truly believe that if we see the brutality of war, if we hear the cry of the anguished, and if we allow our mind to be shocked by truth, then we will not repeat the atrocities of the past.

The above three films are master pieces for they bring us face to face with the truth of injustice. Do we have eyes to see? Do we have voices to speak? Do we have arms to act? Are we human?

أعترف، أنا لست شخص يشاهد الكثير من الأفلام. فإن كنت تريد أن تعرف أي أفلام عليك أن تشاهدها قبل أن تموت (وليعطك الله الصحة) فمن المستحسن أن تتكلم مع شخص آخر. ولكني، بين الفترة والأخرى، اجد نفسي جالسا أمام شاشة (مع الفشار) أشاهد فيلما. من الأفلام العديدة التي شاهدتها هناك ثلاثة أدهشتني وغيرت طريقة تفكيري بالحياة

قد لا تتضمن سيارات فخمة ونساء مثيرات أو أشياء متفجرة، ولكنها تمتلك أمر مشترك: هي تضع الإصبع بإحكام على الجرح النازف للإنسانية وتضغط إلى أن تصرخ من الألم. هذه الأفلام تواجهك بحقيقة العالم. وتجعلك تفكر. وإن كنا محتاجين لشيء في جنون الشرق الأوسط فنحن نحتاج أناس تفكر

Hotel Rwanda – فندق رواندا

هذه قصة عنف إثني حصل في رواندا سنة 1994 حينما قتل متطرفون من الهوتو ما يقارب المليون توتسي. ويرينا الفيلم مدير فندق (هوتو) متزوج من امرأة من قبيلة التوتسي وهو عالق في خضم هذا الصراع الدموي. عليه أن يتخذ قرارات شجاعة ويخاطر بحياته من أجل الآخرين

لقد أجبرني هذا الفيلم مرة أخرى أن أواجه مسألة الإبادة والفظاعات التي نرتكبها نحن البشر ولكنه أيضا مليء بالأمل. بإمكان شخص واحد أن يختار أن يتصرف برحمة وسط جنون القتل. هذا الفيلم أبكاني وجعلي ابتسم وحفزني جعلني أفكر

La Vita e Bella – الحياة جميلة

هذا فيلم إيطالي يصور الصراعات المضحكة جدا لشخصية يهودية إسمه غيدو وهو يحاول أن يربح قلب فتاة إيطالية غنية. لاحقا، عليه أن يستخدم مهاراته الكوميدية في مخيم تعذيب نازي ليجعل إبنه يصدق أنهم في مخيم للتسلية

هذا الفيلم سيجلب دموع الحزن والضحك لوجهك. وهو ينتهي بالأمل. عندما تشاهد هذا الفيلم ستتذكر أن الحياة جميلة عندما تسير الأمور على ما يرام وأن الحياة جميلة في وسط السجن بينما تنتظر الإعدام

Incendies – الحرائق

في هذا الفيلم الفرنسي والعربي نذهب مع توأمين، سيمون وجنى، بينمنا يسافران في اشرق الأوسط بعدما أوصتهما أمهما الميتة نوال مروان بأن يفتشا عن أبيهما وأخاهما الضائعين. تدور القصة في مدينة خيالية إسمها دارش ولكن الصراعات التي تمر بها نوال شبيهة جدا بلبنان. الفيلم يتحرك بين قصة التوأمين وقصة أمهما بينما تتكشف الحقيقة على مهل

أضع هذا الفيلم على رأس اللائحة للأفلم التي يجب أن تشاهدها. عندما ينتهي الفيلم تجلس في حالة صدمة بينما عقلك يحاول استيعاب ما رأيت وسمعت. هذا الفيلم، أكثر من اي فيلم آخر، سيساعدك لترى بشاعة الحرب وقوة الحب اللامتناهية. لو كان بمقدوري لأجبرت كل شعوب الشرق الأوسط أن تشاهد هذا الفيلم

في المدونات السابقة تكلمت، كما الأن، عن الظلم (جرائم القتل في كينيا والإبادة الارمنية). أنا أؤمن أنه إن رأينا فظاعة الحرب وإن سمعنا صرخة المتألمين وإن سمحنا لعقولنا أن تُصدم بالحقيقة فلن نكرر فظاعات الماضي

الافلام الثلاثة أعلاه هي أعمال فنية راقية لأنها تواجهنا مع حقيقة الظلم. هل لدينا عيون لترى؟ هل لدينا أصوات لتتكلم؟ هل لدينا ايادي لتعمل؟ هل نحن بشر؟

Break the Silence, 3 reasons to speak up against injustice – اكسر الصمت، ثلاثة أسباب لرفع الصوت ضد الظلم

This Friday, 24 April, millions of Armenians (and non-Armenians) around the world will walk in demonstrations and hold different activities to remember the genocide of their people on the hands of the Ottoman Turks 100 years ago. Many people will ask: why do you do this? Will anything come of it? Will the dead rise again?
This is a vital question. Should we remember the acts of injustice of the present and the past? Are we wasting our time when we keep shouting out and speaking up about injustice?
Now obviously, as my 60+ loyal readers know, I try to always speak up against injustice. My last post, you can read it here, remembered the victims in the recent terrorist acts in Kenya.

So, here are my 3 reasons we should speak up against injustice (please feel free to add more reasons or come up with counter-reasons in the comments):

 

Reason 1 – The injustice is too BIG

Can we really not talk about 1.5 million murdered Armenians? Can we not talk about the whole Palestinian people losing their homeland? Can we not speak about the children in Lebanon begging on the streets? Can we close our eyes over the modern slavery of sex trade? Can we be silent when we see theft, murder, oppression, sickness, sadness, or sin in the world?
The answer, if you are still wondering, is no! The injustice in the world is too big, too wide, and too far-reaching for us as thinking and feeling human beings to simply ignore. You may be able to, but I can’t.

Injustice should, at the very least, move us to words. My hope is that it will move us to action.

Reason 2 – We follow God’s Kingdom

As I read my Bible and think on the words of those who wrote about God before us, I can’t help but notice one recurring theme: Our God hates injustice. He does. Live with it. The Law of Moses is filled with commandments to take care of the widows and orphans. The prophets of Israel (of old mind you) shouted out against the people for praying to God with their mouths and then oppressing their neighbours with their hands.

Jesus (can we at least take Jesus’ words into consideration?) spent his life on earth healing the sick, feeding the hungry, and giving hope to the hopeless. He spent his life fighting the injustice of his society and proclaimed that God’s children are those who give a cup of cold water to those in need (am sure if Jesus was living in the North Pole he would have spoken of a cup of steaming hot tea).

It is simple. God’s Kingdom, his will for this earth, his purposes for all his children and creation, is that they live in peace and justice together. That is the image of God: “it was good.” When we speak out against injustice, we are saying to all, God is our king; we reject injustice and seek peace and restoration.

Reason 3 – Injustice must not be repeated

In Lebanon we have a phrase “may it be remembered but not repeated” which we use to speak of our 15-year civil war. This week in chapel at the school I work in I showed a short video about the Armenian Genocide to my Middle School students. Perhaps if we remembered the injustice of old we can make sure that we and our children (I do not have any yet) will not repeat the atrocities we see around us. Let us awaken the world to what has happened and is happening, in hope that tomorrow will be better. If we do not have hope in change we have nothing.

As we speak up about our dark past and present we are actually speaking into our yet-unknown future. Your words shed light on the past and light the road to tomorrow. Speak up!

نهار الجمعة في 24 نيسان سيمشي الملايين من الأرمن وغير الأرمن في مسيرات ونشاطات عديدة في ذكرى المجزرة بحق الشعب الأرمني على يد الأتراك العثمانيين قبل 100 عام. وسيسأل الكثيرون: لما يعملون ذلك؟ هل سينالون أي نتيجة؟ هل سيقوم الأموات من قبورهم

وهذا سؤال جوهري. هل يجب علينا أن نتذكر أحداث الظلم الحاضرة والماضية؟ هل نحن نضيع وقتنا عندما نصرخ باستمرار ضد الظلم؟ من الواضح، وكما يعرف قرائي الـ60+، أنا احاول باستمرار أن أتكلم عن الظلم. في مدونتي الأخيرة، ويمكنكم قرائتها هنا، ذكرت ضحايا الإعتداء الإرهابي الأخير على كينيا

السبب الأول – الظلم كبير جدا

هل بإمكاننا ألا نتكلم عن المليون ونصف المليون أرمني المقتول؟ هل بإمكاننا ألا نتكلم عن الشعب الفلسطيني بأكمله الذي خسر أرضه؟ هل بإمكاننا ألا نتكلم عن الأطفال الذين يشحدون على طرقات لبنان؟ هل بإمكاننا أن نغمض عيوننا عن حقيقة العبودية المعاصرة في الإتجار بالجنس؟ هل بإمكاننا أن نسكت عندما نرى السرقة والقتل والظلم والمرض والحزن والخطية في العالم؟  الجواب، إن كنت ما زلت حائرا، هو لا! الظلم في العالم كبير جدا وواسع جدا ومنتشر جدا بحيث لا يسمح لنا كبشر نمتلك العقل والأحاسيس أن نتجاهله. قد تستطيع أنت، أما أنا فلا

الظلم يجب على الأقل أن يحرك لساننا. وأملي أن يحرك أيادينا ايضا

السبب الثاني – نحن نتبع ملكوت الله

وأنا أقرأ كتابي المقدس وأفكر بما كتبه الذين جاؤو قبلنا عن الله، لا يسعني إلا ان ألاحظ موضوع متكرر في كل مكان: إلهنا يكره الظلم. هذه حقيقة. تقبّلها. ناموس موسى مليئ بالوصايا للإهتمام بالأرملة واليتيم. انبياء اسرائيل (اسرائيل قديما) صرخوا ضد الشعب لأنهم كانوا يصلون لله بأفواههم بينما أياديهم تظلم الآخرين

يسوع (دعونا على الأقل نأخذ كلمات المسيح على محمل الجد) أمضى حياته على الأرض يشفي المرضى ويطعم الجياع ويعطي أملا لفاقدي الأمل. أمضى حياته يحارب الظلم في المجتمع ويعلن أن أولاد الله هم أولئك الذين يعطون كأس ماء بارد لمن هو بحاجة إليه – ولو كان يسوع ساكن في القطب الشمالي لتكلم عن إعطاء كأس شاي ساخن

الأمر بسيط. ملكوت الله، مشيئته لهذا العالم، قصده لكل أولاده كما والخليقة هو أن يعيشوا معا بسلام وعدل. هذه هي صورة الله: “إنه حسن.” عندما نرفع الصوت ضد الظلم نحن نقول للجميع أن الله ملكنا ونحن نرفض الظلم ونبتغي الفداء والسلام

السبب الثالث – لا يجب تكرار الظلم

لدينا قول في لبنان “تنذكر وما تنعاد” نستخدمه للتكلم عن الحرب الأهلية اللبنانية التي دامت 15 سنة. في هذا الأسبوع في الكنيسة في المدرسة التي أعمل بها وضعت فيلما قصيرا عن المجزرة الأرمنية لتلامذة الصفوف المتوسطة. لربما إن تذكرنا الظلم القديم سنتأكد من ألا نكرره ويكرره أولادنا. دعونا نوقظ العالم حولنا للأمور التي حصلت والأمور التي تحصل، على أمل أن يكون الغد أفضل. إذا لم يكن لدينا أمل بالغد فنحن لا نملك اي شيء

بينما نرفع الصوت عن ماضينا الحالك وحاضرنا الصعب نكون نتكلم إلى داخل مستقبلنا المجهول. كلماتك تضيء الماضي والطريق للمستقبل. ارفع صوتك

دعونا نقف لنصلي

يا رب

ساعدنا لنكسر الصمت

مثلك

ونصرخ إلى الظلام

ليكن نور

آمين
