On the Scandals of Christian Apologist Ravi Zacharias – حول فضائح المبشّر الدفاعيّ المسيحي رافي زاكارياس

After the death of the world-famous Christian apologist Ravi Zacharias, sexual scandals about his life began to filter through to the public. Just this week, the worldwide apologetics organization (Ravi Zacharias International Ministries – RZIM) he founded made public a private investigation they had conducted in the manner. You can read all about it here. The report includes stories of hundreds of cases of sexual abuse and idolatry towards and with women from all over the world.

The Evangelical world is in shock. Ravi was, for many, a hero of the faith, and a powerful voice against skeptics. Allow me to share my brief thoughts on the matter:

Ravi’s fall is a warning to all Christian leaders. Rather than smiling smugly, let us first look inwards. I can fall like he did. Indeed, it is not for nothing that when Paul discusses sexual immorality in 1 Corinthians 6, he admonishes Jesus followers to “flee from sexual immorality.” When men have power, they are prone to use their power in abusing women for their own lustful pleasers. Christian leaders are not immune from this. Far be from it. If anything, it seems they are more prone to doing it.

Women voices need to be heard. A number of years before his death, a woman did come forward to report abuse. She was silenced. There was no accountability for Ravi. He continued to minister as usual. As long as many of our churches continue to treat women as second-class citizens to men, and as long as women stories are disregarded in favor of the narrative put forward by men, we will continue to face such scandals! It is high time to give women an equal seat at the leadership table at all levels!

It is dangerous to build churches and Christian organizations around one person. It is both unfair for the pastor and the congregation when the entire church structure rotates around the pastor. It is unfair for the leaders. They are in the spotlight, and people expect them to be perfect. It is unfair for the congregation. The leaders can easily control and manipulate their congregation, because in more than one way the pastor becomes the actual god of the church.

Churches have to take sexual abuse seriously. RZIM were hesitant at first to investigate this issue. They were pushed to do so later. I am thankful that they conducted a transparent investigation into the matter. I am thankful that they have made it public. I am thankful that they are repentant. Churches and Christian organizations need to take sexual abuse seriously. In the minds of many, church has become associated with sexual abuse. We need to be firm about this. Religious leaders must be held accountable by civic courts when they behave abusively. It is not enough to give them a “break” from ministry.

The way RZIM deals with this scandal is more important than their huge work in apologetics. In a way it is already too late. Ravi Zacharais has long been known to have a knack for dishonesty. For years he lied about being a professor at Oxford, a student at Cambridge, and other such false claims to increase his prestige. His lies were revealed (I heard about them from multiple sources years back). Nothing happened. He continued to tour the world like a Christian superstar. And now this. It is a sad state of affairs.

RZIM have done marvelous work in answering skeptics of Christianity. They have probably helped countless people to seek to know Christ more. But the sinful behavior of their founder and leader was enough to tarnish all their resources and publications for good.

The world watches as we deal with this. Let us stand with the women oppressed by Ravi. Let us not put this behind our backs because he is dead. And more than anything, let us hold our religious leaders accountable. They are not lord. Jesus is.

حول فضائح المبشّر الدفاعيّ المسيحي رافي زاكاريا

بعد وفاة المبشّر المسيحي الدفاعي المشهور عالميا رافي زاكارياس، بدأت فضائحه الجنسية تظهر للعلن . إنّ المؤسسة العالميّة الدفاعيّة RZIM، والتي أسسها بنفسه، أصدرت هذا الأسبوع تقريرًا مفصّلا لتحقيق خاص أجرته حول هذا الموضوع، وقد تضمّن مئات القصص حول علاقات واعتداءات جنسية اقترفها رافي بحق  نساء في بلدان عدّة

انصدم العالم الإنجيلي بهذا الخبر. كان رافي بطل إيمان لكثيرين، وصوت شجاع في وجه المشككين بالإيمان المسيحي. دعوني أشارك معكم بعض أفكاري البسيطة حول الموضوع

سقوط رافي هو تحذير لكل القادة المسيحيين. لا يجب أن نبتسم بإعتزاز لأننا أفضل منه، بل لننظر إلى دواخلنا. أنا شخصيًّا قد أقع كما وقع هو. ألم يحثّ الرسول بولس أتباع يسوع المسيح في إطار حديثه في رسالته الأولى إلى أهل كورنثوس والفصل السادس عن مخاطر الزنى للهرب من الخطية الجنسية؟ عندما يتقلّد الرجال مقاليد السلطة، يميلون لإستخدام سلطتهم للإعتداء على النساء لإشباع رغباتهم الجنسيّة. والقادة المسيحيين ليسوا مستثنين من هذه القاعدة، لا بل نشعر في بعض الأحيان أنهم عرضة لهذا الأمر أكثر من غيرهم

يجب أن نستمع لأصوات النساء. قبل وفاته ببضعة سنوات، تقدّمت امرأة بشكوى تحرّش جنسي ضد رافي، غير أنّه تمّ إسكاتها ولم يخضع رافي لأي نوع من  المحاسبة فاستمر بخدمته كالمعتاد. إذا استمرّت كنائسنا بمعاملة النساء على أنّهن مواطنات درجة ثانية بالنسبة إلى الرجال، وإذا استمرّت كنائسنا بإهمال قصص النساء وتصديق روايات الرجال، فسنواجه المزيد من هذه الفضائح! حان الوقت كي تجلس النساء بمساواة مطلقة إلى طاولة القيادة مع الرجال

اعتماد كنيسة أو مؤسسة مسيحيّة على شخص واحد أمر بالغ الخطورة؛ الأمر الذي يُعتَبَر غير عادلٍ لا تجاه القس ولا تجاه اللشعب على حدٍّ سواء. عندما تدور الكنيسة في فلك الراعي سيصبح القائد المسيحي تحت المجهر، وسيتوقّع منه الناس الكمال. وفي الوقت نفسه، سيجد القائد سهولة للتحكّم بالشعب وقيادتهم كيفما يشاء، لأنّه، بطريقة أو بأخرى يصبح هذا القائد إله الكنيسة

على الكنيسة أن تتعامل بجدّية مع حالات الإعتداء الجنسي. تردّدت مؤسسة رافي زاكارياس في البداية في الشروع بالتحقيق في فضائح مؤسسها بعد وفاته، وفي وقتٍ لاحق قد تمّ الضغط عليهم للقيام  بالتحقيق. أنا ممتن لهم لقيامهم بهذا التحقيق الشفّاف، وأنا ممتن لهم لأنهم نشروا التحقيق بشكل علني، وأيضًا وأيضًا أنا ممتن لهم لأنه يبدو أنّهم تائبون. يجب أن تتعامل الكنائس والمؤسسات المسيحية بجدّية مع حالات الإعتداء أو التحرش الجنسي. للأسف، تجذّرت في عقول الكثيرة فكرة ارتباط الكنيسة بالإعتداء الجنسي. يجب أن يقف رجال الدين أمام المحاكم المدنية لدفع الحساب عن جرائمهم الجنسية، إن توقيف الخادم عم الخدمة غير كافٍ البتّة

طريقة تعامل مؤسسة رافي زاكارياس مع هذه الفضيحة أهم بكثير من عملهم الضخم في حقل الدفاعيات، مع أنّه وللأسف قد يكون قد فاتهم القطار. لقد عرفنا منذ زمن بعيد أن رافي زاكارياس أدلى ببعض الأدّعاءات الكاذبة، فقد كذب بخصوص كونه “بروفيسور” في جامعة أوكسوفرد وأنه كان تلميذًا في جامعة كامبريدج وغيرها من الإدّعاءات التي تضيف لمعانًا لصورته الأكاديمية. ولقد كشفت عدة مواقع لنشطاء ملحدين أكاذيبه. لم يحدث أي شيء إزاء هذا الموضوع، لا بل  استمر بالسفر حول العالم كبطل مسيحي،  وفي النهاية أُقيم له مأتم مهيب. والآن سمعنا عن هذه الفضائح، يا له من وضع محزن

قام رافي ومؤسسته بعمل جبّار في الإجابة على الشكوك حول المسيحية، وعلى الأرجح ساعدوا عدد لا يحصى من الناس للتقرّب من المسيح، غير أنّ خطيئة المؤسس كانت كافية لتشويه كل مصادرهم وإصداراتهم إلى أمد غير منظور

العالم يراقب ردّة فعلنا. لنقف مع النساء المظلومات من قبل رافي بدل تجاهل الموضوع لأنه مات. وقبل كل شيء، لنضع قادتنا المسيحيين أمام مسؤولياتهم. فهم ليسوا بأربابٍ لنا، بل لنا ربّ واحد وهو يسوع المسيح

Did the Coronavirus Prove that God does not Exist? هل أثبت فايروس كورونا عدم وجود الله؟

It is quite the time to be alive. We are living in a global pandemic. This is not an apocalyptic movie, video game, or board game. This is real life. We sit huddled in the safety of our homes, and thousands of medical workers and other vital parts of society brave the outdoors.

But in the online world no one is staying inside. On the contrary, old wars have been renewed, and new wars are being waged. The most prominent being between atheists and believers.

The main argument used by atheists can be paraphrased by the following statement: God is imaginary. When real danger struck, all religious places of worship were closed. Religious leaders are unable to find a solution. All eyes turn now to science. Religion is useless.

I will attempt to reply to this accusation. I will state from the onset that I do not care for defending religion in general. In fact, I do not care for defending Christianity, or at least all that Christianity has become. I will be defending my personal faith in Jesus Christ.

First of all, yes, atheists are right. A magical god who protects believers from all dangers and intervenes to solve all their problems does not exist (see my take on praying for protection in my previous blog). I don’t care what bible passages you can quote (que psalm 91), the current crisis, for all intents and purposes, has proven beyond a shadow of doubt that such a god does not exist.

Second, the New Testament never claims that it’s the church’s job to heal diseases. Yes, God has intervened in scriptures, history, and with people I know personally to heal in a supernatural way. But that has never been the purpose of faith in Jesus. You see, the bible places the problems of this world firmly on sin and not sickness. This world is broken. Humanity is broken. If anything, the current coronavirus crisis has proven that. Prices have gone up and people are panic-buying all the resources. The issue of sin, be it selfishness, hate, or general evil, will not be resolved by science. A thousand years more of scientific research will not make us better people. Science can and does provide solutions to most of the problems of this world. Science allows me to write this blog and post it online. Science will hopefully soon provide a vaccine for Covid-19. But it can’t devise a solution for the problem of sin. This is the gospel. This is the message of Jesus. Perhaps it is too simple that it will be laughable for some. But it is what it is. Jesus, by his life, death, and resurrection, was victorious over sin and death. We can join in his victory if we choose to follow him.

Third, the Christian faith hinges on one fact. Not on miracles. Not on supernatural happenings. The Christian faith hinges on the death and resurrection of Christ. Prove those wrong and yes, you have proven that my faith in Jesus is wishful thinking.

Fourth, and finally, there are brilliant scientists who follow Jesus. There are brilliant scientists who are atheists. A Christian worldview sees the hand of God behind and through all that is good in this world, including scientific advancements and discoveries. Faith in Jesus does not oppose science. Yes, the church has stood in the face of science multiple times across history. Those events are deplorable. But the church has also stood with science and enhanced scientific discovery in other places and times across history.

I join my voice to that of my atheist friends in asking my fellow followers of Jesus, and all believers in general, to take a moment to reconsider our theology in light of what is happening.

I am aware that this blog does not answer all the thoughts and questions of my atheist friends. I am aware that the problem of evil (how does a good God allow evil in the world?) is wider than the above discussion. I hope that, at the very least, this blog pushes my atheist friends to reconsider their attacks on religion. I also hope that this blog pushes my fellow believers to reconsider their views about God.

Allow me to end with a salute to all the scientists, nurses, doctors, cleaners, workers in the food industry, and security forces working tirelessly day and night in the face of danger to help bring an end to this nightmare.

هل أثبت فايروس كورونا عدم وجود الله؟

إنه لوقت مميّز في تاريخ البشرية! ها نحن نعيش  وسط وباء عالمي! لسنا نشاهد فيلمًا أو نلعب لعبة إلكترونيّة، أو ثقافيّة عن نهاية العالم، بل هذه حقيقة واقعة. نحن نجلس مختبئين في بيوتنا بينما يواجه آلاف العاملين في قطاعات الصحّة والطعام وغيرها العالم الخارجي الخطير

ولكن عبر الإنترنت الصورة تختلف تمامًا، لا أحد “يقبع في منزله” بل تم إحياء حروب قديمة، واندلعت أخرى جديدة. وأهم تلك الصراعات هو الصراع بين الملحدين والمؤمنين

الحجة الأساسيّة التي يلجأ إليها الملحدون هي التالية: الله خرافة. عندما دق ناقوس الخطر الحقيقيّ أُغلقت دور العبادة أبوابها وعجز رجال الدين عن إيجاد الحلول. والآن كل العيون شخصت نحو العلم، والدين أصبح بلا منفعة

سأحاول الردّ على هذا الإتّهام ولكن دعوني أوضّح أنه بدايةً  لا يهمّني الدفاع عن الأديان بشكل عام، ولا حتى يهمّني الدفاع عن المسيحيّة، أو أقلّه ما آلت إليه المسيحيّة في يومنا هذا، في المقابل، سأدافع عن إيماني الشخصي بيسوع المسيح

أولًا، الملحدون على حق. لا يوجد إله خرافي يحمي المؤمنين من كل المصائب ويتدخل دائًما لحل مشاكلهم (أنظر رأيي بالصلاة من أجل حماية إلهيّة في المدوّنة الماضية). لا يهمني إن استطعت أن تقتبس آيات كتابيّة حول هذا الموضوع (مثال مزمور 91)، فواقع الأمر أنّ هذه الأزمة أثبتت بما لا يقبل الشك بأن إله مماثل غير موجود

ثانياً، لا يدّعي العهد الجديد بأنّ دور الكنيسة هو الشفاء من الأمراض. نعم، تدخّل الله في الكتاب المقدس وعبرالتاريخ وحتّى مع أناس أعرفهم شخصياً بالشفاء بطرقٍ تفوق الطبيعة، غير أنّ هذا الأمر لم يكن يومًا هدف الإيمان بيسوع. الكتاب المقدس يحدّد مشكلة البشرية، ألا وهي الخطية وليس المرض. عالمنا فاسد والبشرية فاسدة، وأزمة فايروس كورونا هذه تذكّرنا بتلك الحقيقة المرّة، فالأسعار في غلاء مستمر والناس تشتري الأغراض بهلع وبدون التفكير بغيرها. ليس بمقدور العلم أن يجد الحلّ لمشكلة الخطيّة، أو سمّها الأنانية أو الكراهية أو الشرّ بشكل عام، ولو استمرّت الأبحاث العلميّة لألف سنة، فلن نصبح أناسًا أفضل. يقدّم العلم الحلول لمعظم مشاكل الأرض؛ فالعلم يتيح لي كتابة هذه المدوّنة ويتيح لي الوسيلة لتحميلها عبر الشبكة الإلكترونيّة، وأرجو أن يكتشف العلم الحل عمّا قريب لفايروس كورونا، ولكنّ العلم عاجز أمام مشكلة الخطيّة. وهذا هو الإنجيل؛ هذه هي رسالة يسوع! قد تبدو بسيطة لدرجة السخافة، ولكن هذه هي ببساطة ولا أمتلك غيرها: فيسوع من خلال حياته وموته وقيامته انتصر على الخطيئة والموت، وننضم نحن لهذا الإنتصار إن اخترنا اتباع المسيح

ثالثاً، الإيمان المسيح لا يرتبط بالعجائب أو الأمور الفائقة للطبيعة، غير أنّه يرتبط بحقيقة واحدة، وهي موت يسوع وقيامته. إن استطعت أن تبرهن أنّ المسيح لم يمت ولم يقم من الأموات فعندئذٍ تكون قد برهنت أن إيماني بيسوع مجرد خرافات وأوهام

رابعاً وأخيراً، في عالمنا علماء بارعون وهم من أتباع المسيح، وعلماء آخرون بارعون وهم ملحدون. المنظار المسيحي للعالم يرى يد الله في كل أمر صالح في الكون، بما في ذلك الإنجازات والإكتشافات العلميّة. فالإيمان بيسوع لا يتعارض مع العلم. نعم، للأسف وقفت الكنيسة عبر التاريخ عدة مرات في وجه العلم، وهذه أحداث مشينة في تاريخنا، ولكنّها وقفت أيضا في عدّة مراحل وأماكن في التاريخ مع التقدّم العلمي وساهمت به

أضمّ صوتي لأصوات أصدقائي الملحدين في الطّلب من أتباع يسوع والمؤمنين بشكل عام بأن يستغلّوا الفرصة للتفكير في لاهوتنا على ضوء ما يحدث اليوم

هذه المدونة لا تجيب كل أفكار أصدقائي الملحدين وأسئلتهم، وهي لا تناقش الموضوع الأوسع وهو مشكلة الشر (كيف يسمح إله صالح بحدوث الشر؟)، ولكن رجائي أن تدفع أصدقائي الملحدين على الأقل لإعادة التفكير بهجومهم على الدين. وأصلّي أن تدفع زملائي المؤمنين بإعادة التفكير بنظرتهم لله

دعوني أختم بتحيّة لكل العلماء والممّرضين والأطباء والعاملين في قطاعات التنظيف والطعام ولقوات حفظ الأمن من أجل تعبهم صباحاً ومساءاً في وجه الخطر لإنهاء هذا الكابوس

Isn’t it Time for Civil Marriage? ألم يأتي وقت الزواج المدني؟

A post has been circulating the Lebanese (and maybe Arab?) social media over the past week. It is the picture of a Lebanese Christian man and a Lebanese Muslim woman getting married. Apparently, the couple chose to get married in a church and then also visited a sheikh. I am not sure if they conducted another marriage ceremony the Muslim way.

In case you do not know, marriage in Lebanon is sectarian. You only have one option of getting married in Lebanon: with your sect. I, an Evangelical, was married by an Evangelical priest. If you are Muslim, then a Muslim cleric has to conduct the marriage.

Hence, mixed marriages are tricky. Usually, the couple chooses to follow the religion of one of the two, usually the male. Interestingly, Muslims are usually fine with a Muslim man marrying a Christian woman (one more in the clan), and Christians are fine with a Christian man marrying a Muslim woman (one more in the clan).

Moreover, according to most of the followers of the Muslim faith, only a Muslim wedding is valid. According to most of the Christians, only a marriage conducted in Church is valid.

Hence, whenever the topic of civil marriage comes up, most religious people would argue, rather angrily, that civil marriage will remove God from marriage.

A very simple retort is that marriage, whether in a church or mosque, does not put God in the picture. The couple, through their daily relationship with God, place God in their lives. Unfortunately, marriage conducted in a church or mosque is not a magical way to include God. A couple can get married “in front of God” but have nothing to do with God. Moreover, God is not limited to religion – but that is another topic.

Isn’t it time then for civil marriage?

You see, already as a Christian I accept the existence of marriage outside of church, for the Muslim (whether I like it or not). Already the Muslims of this country accept the marriages conducted in church as legal (whether they like it or not). We already have, without the civil marriage, two (we actually have over 15 with all the sects) types of marriages – Muslim and Christian.

The question then becomes, what about people who are not religious? Do we force them to get married before God? Will this make them love God, or will it make them hate him more?

What about mixed marriages? What if the couple want neither a Christian nor a Muslim wedding? Are they forced to choose?

What about atheists? They do not believe that God even exists. Must they go through the “act” of getting married in front of God?

What about people who love God but have a problem with their faith group? Must they be restricted to the faith of their birth upon marriage?

Jesus, in a famous saying, asked the crowds to give Caesar his due and to give God his due. We would be reading backwards if we said that Jesus was splitting religion from government, but it is an interesting fact that the Christian religion does not have rules for ruling a state. It is a fact that the early church did not conduct marriages.

Let then people get married by the government (Caesar) and let them, if they want, choose to live their lives in service of God and the church.

Isn’t it time to stop forcing God on people? Isn’t it time for civil marriage?

مدونة #68 – ألم يأتي وقت الزواج المدني؟

يتم تداول بوست على مواقع التواصل الاجتماعي اللبنانية (وربما العربية؟) في الأسبوع الماضي. هي صورة لرجل لبناني مسيحي وامرأة لبنانية مسلمة يتزوجان. على ما يبدو، اختارا الزواج في الكنيسة وثم قاما بزيارة شيخ. لا أعلم اذا أقاما أيضا زواجا على الطريقة المسلمة

في حال كنتم تجهلون ذلك، الزواج في لبنان طائفي. لديك خيار وحيد فقط ان اردت الزواج في لبنان: مع طائفتك. أنا انجيلي فكان لا بد ان يزوجني قس انجيلي. اذا كنت مسلما، فلا بد من شيخ مسلم أن يقوم بالزواج

لذا الزيجات المختلطة عادة ما تكون شائكة. عادة ما يختار العرسان ديانة أحد الطرفين، وهي عادة ديانة الذكر. من المثير للاهتمام أن المسلمين عادة لا يعارضون زواج رجل مسلم بفتاة مسيحية (نزيد شخصا على القبيلة)، والمسيحيون عادة لا يعارضون زواج رجل مسيحي مع فتاة مسلمة (نزيد شخصا على القبيلة

زد على ذلك انه بحسب معظم المسلمين فقط الزواج المسلم هو الصح. وكذلك بحسب معظم المسيحيين فقط الزواج في الكنيسة هو الصائب

لذا، عندما يفتح أحدهم سيرة الزواج المدنين تقوم قيامة المتدينين قائلين أن الزواج المدني سيزيل الله من الصورة

جواب بسيط على هذه الحجة هو أن الزواج في المسجد أو الكنيسة لا يضع الله في الصورة. بل علاقة العريسين اليومية مع الله تضعه في حياتهما. للاسف، الزواج في الكنيسة أو الجامع ليس طريقة سحرية ليدخل الله في الزواج. بامكان العروسين الزواج “أمام الله” ولكن العيش بابتعاد تام عنه. زد على ذلك أن الله ليس محدود بالدين – ولكن ذلك موضوع ليوم آخر

ألم يأتي وقت الزواج المدني؟

اذا فكرت مليا في الأمر، يا عزيزي القارئ، أنت كمسيحي بالأصل تقبل وجود زواج خارج الكنيسة وهو زواج المسلمين (سواء أردت ذلك أو لم ترد). وأنت يا عزيزي المسلم بالأصل تقبل شرعية زواج الكنيسة (سواء اردت ذلك أو لم ترد). نحن من الأن لدينا، بدون الزواج المدني، نوعان من الزواج (لدينا أكثر من 15 بحسب الطوائف ولكن نحاول تبسيط الأمور) – المسلم والمسيحي

يصبح السؤال عندها، ماذا عن الناس غير المتدينين؟ هل نجبرهم أن يتزوجوا أمام الله؟ هل سيجعلهم ذلك يحبونه، أو هل سيكرهونه أكثر؟

ماذا عن الزيجات المختلطة؟ ماذا لو لم يرد العروسان العرس المسيحي أو المسلم؟ هل نفرض عليهم أحد الخيارين؟

ماذا عن الملحدين؟ لا يؤمنون بوجود الله. هل يجب أن يمروا بمسرحية الزواج أمام الله؟

ماذا عن الناس الذين يحبون الله ولكن ليسوا على علاقة جيدة مع طائفتهم؟ هل يجب ان نحدّهم بالزواج في الايمان الذي ولدوا به؟

يسوع، في أحد أشهر أقواله، طلب من الجموع أن تعطي قيصر حقه وتعطي الله حقه. لا نريد أن نقرأ التاريخ إلى الوراء ونقول أن يسوع فصل بين الدين والدولة، ولكنه من المثير للاهتمام أن الديانة المسيحية لا تمتلك قوانين لحكم الدولة. وهي حقيقة أن الكنيسة الأولى لم تقوم بتزويج الناس
