Two cars burn in Baghdad’s night sky. The most important Iranian military leader, general Suleimani, has been killed by a US drone strike. Millions around the world celebrate his death. Millions shout for revenge. We wait for war.

The screams of a woman pierce the Egyptian night. It is New Years’ eve. Over 40 guys sexually assault her. A few guys rush her into a car and help her escape. The next day many voices blame the woman for dressing in the wrong way, or for being out at night. Other voices weep in shock.

The first event rocked the Middle East and the world. The second event barely made it in the news outside of Egypt.

And we continue to fight against American imperialism, Israeli oppression, Iranian fundamentalism, and Saudi terrorism. Let’s say we win in any of these struggles.

What have we won if a woman in an Egyptian city cannot walk the street at night without being sexually assaulted? What have we won if till this day, in most Arab countries, brothers, fathers, and husbands are legally allowed to kill their sisters, daughters, and wives if they feel that their “honor” has been shamed? In what level of human existence are we if people’s first reaction after seeing a defenseless woman assaulted by 40 men is to blame her?

The first struggle, and I would say the only struggle, for us today is for rights. Women rights. Children rights. Gay rights. Animal rights. Elderly rights. Environmental rights. The right to live in dignity and equality with others.

All other struggles and conflicts are a waste of our time. If we win in every single geo-political struggle, but fail to become a society where all members can live in dignity, then we have lost.

In the past century millions have died in this part of the world. In the coming decades, perhaps millions more will die. Yet we see our societies are becoming more oppressive towards minorities, women, and others.

Is the death of Suleimani important? On a geo-political level, it is a massive earthquake. For the sobbing girl in Mansoura, Egypt, it is meaningless.

Let us stand in prayer

Forgive us,

We know how to rule

In your name

But not how to love

هل يُعتَبَر اغتيال الجنرال سليماني حدثًا مهمًّا؟

ينير ليل بغداد نيران سيّارتان تحترقان! لقد نجحت الولايات المتحدّة في قتل أهم مسؤول عسكري إيراني، الجنرال سليماني، بغارة جويّة مُحكَمة. احتفل الملايين حول العالم بموته، ويطالب ملايين آخرون حول العالم بالثأر لاغتياله. ونحن نجلس ونترقّب اندلاع الحرب!

أمّا ليل مصر فقد اخترقه صراخ امرأة تستغيث. إنها ليلة رأس السنة! فقد اعتدى على المرأة المسكينة حوالى 40 شابًا، وركض بضع شبان لإنقاذها، فقد  وضعوها في سيارةٍ وقادوا مسرعين. في اليوم التالي، ألقى العشرات اللوم على الفتاة بسبب لباسها غير المحتشم وخروجها للتنزّه في الليل، بينما بكى آخرون أمام فظاعة المشهد

هزّ الحدث الأول الشرق الأوسط والعالم. أمّا الحدث الثاني، فبالكاد سمع به الناس خارج مصر

ونستمر بالمواجهة مع الإمبرياليّة الأميركية، والقمع الإسرائيلي، والتطرّف الإيراني، والإرهاب السعودي.

ولنسلّم جدلاً أننا ربحنا  أحدى هذه المعارك

فما الذي سنربحه إذا لم تستطع امرأة أن تمشي في شوارع مصر ليلاً بدون التعرّض للإعتداء الجنسي؟ وماذا سنربح إذا ما زلنا حتّى يومنا هذا نرى الأشقّاء والآباء والأزواج يقتلون الأخوات والبنات والزوجات بحجّة “الشرف”؟(تُعتَبَرجريمة الشرف قانونيّة في معظم البلدان العربية). ما المستوى بشري الذي بلغناه إن وجدنا مئة حجّة لتبرير الإعتداء الوحشي على امرأة مسالمة وألقينا اللوم عليها؟

الصراع الأول، لا بل الوحيد، هو صراعنا اليوم من اجل الحقوق؛ حقوق النساء، حقوق الأطفال‘ حقوق المثليين، حقوق الحيوانات، حقوق كبار السن، حقوق البيئة، الحق بأن نعيش بكرامة ومساواة مع الآخرين

رأيي، إنّ كل الصراعات والنزاعات الأخرى هي مضيعة للوقت! فإذا ربحنا  كل الصراعات الجيوسياسية وفشلنا في بناء مجتمع يحيا فيه  أعضاؤه  على مختلف أطيافهم بكرامة، فنكون بالحقيقة قد خسرنا

في القرن الماضي مات الملايين في هذا الجزء من العالم، وفي العقود المقبلة سيموت أيضًا الملايين ومع ذلك، نرى مجتمعاتنا تصبح قمعيّة أكثر فأكثر تجاه الأقليّات والنساء ومجموعات أخرى

هل يُعتَبَر اغتيال سليماني حدثًا مهمًّا؟  على المستى الجيوسياسي، هو حدث مزلزل

أما إذا قارناه بالمرأة الباكية في المنصورة في مصر، فهو حدث بلا معنى

Thai Boys in a Cave and Gaza Children in a Cage – صبيان تايلاند في كهف وأطفال غزة في حبس

Over the last weeks the entire world turned its attention to the 12 Thai boys, and their coach, who were trapped in an underground cage for weeks after a surprise flood.

Divers from around the world tried to help, and world media updated us daily on their fate.

At the very same time, but not for years rather than weeks, the people of Gaza continue to live in horrible conditions (the UN said that Gaza will become unlivable in 2020). About 1,200,000 are under the age of 25 (66% of the population).

The same can be said about the children of Syria, Yemen, and a myriad of other places around the globe.

Now, this is not a nagging post. I am not here to say that the Media, especially in the West, only cares about certain problems.

I am also aware that thousands of individuals and NGOs around the world are trying to help Gaza.

I am simply asking: What made the world come together to help those 12 boys (whom I am overjoyed that they got saved) while it remains ignorant of the plight of 1.2 million children and young adults in Gaza?

Both groups are similar. Both are stuck. The first in a small cage, and the second in a small piece of land – an open prison; they are surrounded by a strict Israeli blockade.

What makes the world care for one group and ignore the second, although the Gaza children are in more danger, their problem has been going on for way more time, and there is no foreseeable solution up ahead?

Perhaps the answers are the in the question.

Perhaps the Gaza crisis overwhelms us. We freeze. I know it happens to me. Where do I start? How do I help? We are talking about millions of Palestinians in constant distress. What can I do?

Perhaps the major wars, Syria, Yemen, and others, overwhelm us. What do we do in the face of huge disaster? What can we do in the face of millions of immigrants, millions of dead children, millions of hungry faces, and millions of stories seeking attention and resolution?

Perhaps the story of the 12 Thai boys is simple. Limited. 12 boys. 1 cave. Get divers in. Get the boys out. A crisis for 2-3 weeks. It is done. It is very dangerous, yes. These boys could have died, yes. But it was limited.

A good friend from Germany, pastor Eric Smith, once told me, and I don’t know if he was quoting anyone: “Do for one what you would like to do for many.”

I would love to free the people of Gaza. I would love to feed the hungry of Syria. I would love to stop the war in Yemen.

But I can’t. I am overwhelmed.

I will contact a local NGO that helps Palestinians and give a small donation.

I will visit a Syrian refugee family that lives nearby and share food.

I will walk in a demonstration to end the war in Yemen.

I will move. I will not be overwhelmed.

Whether it is 12 or 1.2 million people in distress.

I will not be silent.

 

I love one the metaphor Jesus used to explain the Kingdom of God. It is a small seed that grows into a huge tree.

في الأسابيع الماضية انشغل العالم بالصبية ال12 من تايلاند ومدربهم العالقين في كهف تحت الأرض بعد حدوث فيضان فجائي

حاول غطاسون من حول العالم المساعدة، ودأبت وسائل الإعلام العالمية على إعلامنا بكل جديد يوميا

بنفس الوقت، ولسنوات وليس اسابيع، استمر شعب غزة في العيش في ظروف مروعة (وقد صرحت الأمم المتحدة أن غزة ستصبح غير صالحة للحياة بحلول سنة 2020). حوالي 1،200،000 شخص (أي 66% من السكان) هم تحت عمر 25

نستطيع أن نقول أمور مماثلة عن أطفال سوريا واليمن وعدة مناطق حول العالم

لنكن واضحين، هذه ليست مدونة للنق. لا أريد أن أقول أن الإعلام، وخصوصا في الغرب، يركز فقط على بعض المشاكل

أنا أيضا أعرف أنه يوجد آلاف الأشخاص والجمعيات من حول العالم تحاول مساعدة غزة

ولكنني أسأل بكل بساطة: ماذا يدفع العالم للتوحد لمساعدة الصبية ال12 (وأنا سعيد للغاية بخبر خلاصهم) بينما يجهل معظم الناس معاناة 1.2 مليون طفل وشابة في غزة؟

المجموعتان مماثلتان. الإثنان  عالقان. الأول في كهف والثاني في قطعة أرض صغيرة – حبس في الهواء الطلق ومحاطا بحصار إسرائيلي صارم

ماذا يدفع العالم للإهتمام بالمجموعة الأولى وتجاهل الثانية، مع أن أطفال غزة في خطر أكبر ومشكلتهم مر عليها وقت أطول ولا يوجد حل في الأفق؟

ربما الجواب في السؤال

ربما مشكلة غزة تبتلعنا. نتجمد أمامها. أعرف أن الأمر يحصل معي. من أين أبدأ؟ كيف أساعد؟ نحن نتكلم عن ملايين الفلسطينيين في ألم مستمر. ماذا أفعل؟

ربما كل الحروب الرئيسية، من سوريا لليمن لباقي المناطق، تخنقنا. ماذا نفعل في مواجهة مصيبة ضخمة؟ ماذا نفعل في مواجهة وجوه ملايين النازحين وملايين القتلى زملايين الجائعين وملايين القصص التي تطلب انتباهنا وحلولنا؟

ربما قصة الصبيان ال12 بسيطة. محدودة. 12 صبي. كهف واحد. يدخل الغطاسون. يخرج الأولاد. مصيبة ل2-3 أسابيع. انتهت. خطرة جدا، نعم. واجه الصبيان الموت، نعم. ولكنها محدودة

قال لي صديقي العزيز إريك سميث، وهو قسيس الماني، ولا أعرف ان كان يقتبس أحدهم – افعل بالواحد ما تتمنى أن تفعل بالجميع

أحب أن أحرر أهل غزة. أحب أن أطعم جياع سوريا. أحب أن أوقف الحرب في اليمن

Is the Syrian the Enemy? هل السوري هووي العدو؟

Many of the Lebanese, generally speaking, have not been good friends with Syrians over the past 30 years. For many Lebanese, Syria is the occupier who controlled Lebanon with its military up to 2005.

Since 2011, and as approximately 2 million Syrian refugees, most of them Muslim, made their way to Lebanon (with a population of 4.5 million), the Lebanese generally, and the Christian population particularly, have kept calling for the return of the Syrians to Syria.

Hatred is on the rise. You can feel it as you read the signs in the Lebanese towns that ban Syrians from walking the streets after 8:00 pm. You can feel it as you stroll through Facebook and come across Lebanese videos and pages cursing the Syrians. You can feel it as you sip coffee in a house visit and the talk invariably returns to how the Syrians are taking all the jobs.

It is true that the huge population of refugees has had a negative impact on the Lebanese economy and infrastructure. I have also previously argued that their presence is a blessing to Lebanon.

The question becomes: is the Syrian refugee in Lebanon truly the enemy of the Lebanese people?

I think not.

Who is the enemy then?

The enemy is the many countries funding and encouraging the war in Syria.

The enemy is our failed government(s) which, even before the coming of the Syrians to Lebanon, was unable to give us 24/7 electricity, reliable internet, good roads, acceptable wages, and most other services.

The enemy is religious fundamentalism and dictatorships that refuse the existence of the other.

The enemy is hate, racism, and the refusal to put ourselves in other people’s shoes.

But this is not a post to rant about the rise of hate in Lebanon. Nor is this a post to convince the haters to love the refugees. That is beyond my power.

This is a post to encourage the other 50% (or perhaps more?), those Lebanese people, most of them poor, who are refusing to join the wave of hate against the Syrians.

To them, I say, as the hate rises so let our love rise!

When in a visit and people start to bash the Syrians. Listen, acknowledge their anger, and then put forth a different opinion. Be the voice of the voiceless.

When you witness abuse from your local police against Syrians, speak up.

If you meet refugees in your building, on the street, or beside your work, give them a smile. Offer your financial support. It is illegal to offer work for Syrians, but it is not illegal to offer food, clothes, money, or any kind of help.

Volunteer your time in an NGO or religious institution helping the refugees.

Become friends with a refugee family. It is almost impossible to hate your friends.

 

Whatever we do, let us not allow the voice of hatred to have the final say.

Are the Good Guys or the Bad Guys Winning in Aleppo? هل يربح الأخيار أم الأشرار في حلب؟

ِAleppo two days ago

When we used to come late to a movie, we would ask our friends or family who had already started the movie: Who are the bad guys, and who are the good guys?

Almost every action movie is clear about the two. Almost every action movie ends with the good guys winning over the bad guys.

Fact 1 on people’s mind these days: the Syrian government forces (and allies) have taken all of the city of Aleppo back from the hands of the opposition.

That is where the agreement ends.

I have friends on Facebook, from Aleppo and Lebanon, who are celebrating the victory over the dark forces (the bad guys) who had terrorized the city.

I have friends on Facebook who are lamenting this new development as a modern genocide.

Who is right and who is wrong?

Can both be right and both be wrong?

Do we have to choose one side? Do we have to regard this development either as a victory or a tragedy?

If you are against the Syrian regime you are probably seething with anger right now. You want to shout at me: But Nabil, the government and its allies are killing civilians.

Oh. If it only were this simple.

There are civilians on the other side too. What about the millions of civilians who had to leave Syria because of the rebellion? What about the civilians residing in government-controlled areas, aren’t they being bombed? If the opposition had planes, would it not had used them on the other civilians?

By now you think I am pro-regime.

I am not.

I do not and will not defend Assad or his cruel ways.

The truth of the matter is I feel both joy and sadness at this development.

Part of me is happy because I fear what might happen if Assad’s regime falls. I fear the dominance of radical groups and Saudi-led madness.

Part of me cringes at the horrors which the Assad regime is committing. I despair for the thousands of dead civilians on both sides, for this fearsome war that seems to know no end, for this machine of hate that devours innocent bodies every day.

I hold both inside me in tension.

I will not be forced by the media on either side to see the world in black and white.

I will not be forced to blindly follow a regime or a movement and disregard its atrocities.

I will not be forced to turn a blind eye towards the innocent dead when my “side” is winning.

I will not be forced to choose security over freedom, or chaos over dictatorship.

I cannot force the world into good guys and bad guys.

 

I despise all your choices and I accept all your choices.

 

What then?

No, not paralysis, not ignorance, not apathy, but diligent work to end this hideous war and re-create a safe Syria for the Syrians to live in.

What can we, the powerless, do?

We can read different media sources.

We can always side with civilians and not regimes or ideologies.

We can advocate, when possible, for peace.

We can refuse to celebrate death when our side is winning.

 

At least this…Let us refuse to celebrate death…At least this.

مدونة #54: هل يربح الأشرار أم الأخيار في حلب؟

حلب قبل يومين

عندما كنا نأتي متأخرين لمشاهدة فيلم ونحن صغار، كنا نسأل العائلة والأصدقاء: من الأشرار ومن الأخيار؟

وعادة كل أفلام الحركة تحتوي على تعريف واضح للفرقتين. وعادة تنتهي كل أفلام الحركة بفوز الأخيار على الأشرار

الحقيقة الأولى التي تشغل العالم هذا الأسبوع هي سيطرة القوات السورية الحكومية (وحلفائها) على كامل مدينة حلب

وهنا ينتهي التوافق

لدي أصدقاء على فايسبوك، من حلب ولبنان، يحتفلون بهذا الإنتصار على قوى الظلام (الأشرار) الذين أرعبوا المدينة

ولدي أصدقاء على فايسبوك يندبون هذا التطور الجديد ويصفونه بالإبادة الجماعية

من على خطأ ومن على صواب؟

هل بأمكان الطرفين أن يكونا على خطأ أو صواب؟

هل ينبغي علينا أن نختار طرف؟ هل علينا أن ننظر لهذا التطور عل أنه انتصار أو مصيبة؟

لو كنت ضد النظام السوري فبالتأكيد أنت تستشيط غضبا الأن وتتمنى لو بامكانك أن تصرخ بوجهي: ولكن يا نبيل يا حبيبي (وحبيبي هنا ليست عائلتي بل دعوة منك لأعود لرشدي) النظام وحلفائه يقتلون المدنيين

يا ليت المسألة بهذه البساطة

هناك مدنيون على المقلب الآخر. ماذا عن ملايين المدنيين الذين تهجروا من سوريا بسبب الثورة؟ ماذا عن المدنيين الساكنين في مناطق سيطرة النظام؟ ألا يتم قصفهم يوميا؟ لو امتلكت المعارضة طائرات، ألم تكن ستستخدمها على المدنيين في المقلب الآخر؟

والأن أنتم تعتقدون بأنني مؤيد للنظام

كلا

لم ولن أدافع عن الأسد وطرقه القاسية

ولكن حقيقة الأمر هو أنني شعرت بالفرح والحزن في آن معا تجاه هذا التطور

جزء مني فرح لأنني أخشى سقوط نظام الأسد. اخشى من سيطرة الجماعات التكفيرية وجنون السعودية

وجزء آخر مني يبكي عل فظاعات نظام الأسد. أشعر بالأسى من أجل الوف القتلى المدنيين يوميا من الجهتين، وهذه الحرب البغيضة التي لا تنتهي، وآلة الكره التي تلتهم أجساد الأبرياء كل يوم

أتمسك بالشعورين في داخلي في توتر مستمر

أرفض الإعلام الذي يجبرني على اختيار فريق ورؤية العالم بالأسود والأبيض

ارفض أن يتحول دعمي لنظام أو حركة إلى دعم لجرائمه

ارفض غض النظر عن موت الأبرياء عندما يكون فريقي منتصرا

أرفض أن أختار بين الأمن والحرية أو الفوضى والديكتاتورية

أرفض أن أرى الدنيا مقسمة بين أخيار وأشرار

أمقت كل خياراتكم وأقبل كل خياراتكم

ماذا إذا؟

كلا، ليس الشلل ولا الجهل ولاعدم المبالاة، ولكن العمل الدؤوب لإنهاء هذه الحرب البشعة وإعادة خلق سوريا آمنة ليحيا فيها السوريين

وماذا نقدر نحن الضعفاء أن نفعله؟

نستطيع أن نتابع عدة مصادر للأخبار

نستطيع أن نقف دائما في صف المدنيين وليس الأنظمة أو الأيدولوجيات

نستطيع أن نطالب بالسلام، عندما تسنح لنا الفرصة

نستطيع أن نرفض الإحتفال بالموت عندما يربح فريقنا

وهو أضعف الإيمان ألا نحتفل بالموت…هو أضعف الإيمان

Is it God’s Will that Trump becomes President? هل هي مشيئة الله أن يكون دونالد ترامب رئيسا؟

 

Donald Trump is the new president of the USA.

Fact number 1 on the minds of most people today.

Shocking, right?

As Americans and the world come to terms with this news, it struck me how many of my friends on Facebook (too many really) reacted by stating the following fact 2:

It is God’s will that Trump becomes president.

Is that so?

Does God control this world? Is he in charge of all its details?

I have a problem with this line of thinking for two simple reasons.

 

If everything is God’s will, then why is the world messed up?

If God is controlling all the details, then he is doing a very bad job of it.

If God were truly in control and the world was truly moving according to his will then, if he is the loving God we speak about and see in Christ, the world would be a far better place to live in.

 

What about free will?

Did God choose to appoint Hitler as ruler of Germany? Did God start the war in Syria? Did God mastermind the shootings in Paris? Is God trafficking millions of women in the sex trade? Did God get drunk, drive a car, and run people over?

 

I firmly believe in the goodness of God.

I do not believe in a God who causes the chaos, but a God who shouts “let there be light” above and into the chaos.

I firmly believe in a God who takes the evil of a crucified Jesus and turns it into salvation for the entire world.

 

The current world is a place of darkness – as the apostle Paul puts it (see, I also know the Bible) this world is a “present darkness” ruled by authorities and powers that oppose the will of God –  and one-day God will transform this present Babel of darkness into a new creation of light.

Until that day comes, let us not sit in idleness as the darkness grows around us. Let us rather take arms and fight the good fight, working hard to be a voice of love and truth in a world veering towards hatred.

 

No, God did not cause the war in Syria. Money, power, foolishness, and greed caused it. But the church must move to show love to Syrian refugees, turning the war into an opportunity to be the graceful presence of Jesus Christ.

 

No, God did not appoint Donald Trump. A portion of the American people voted him into the office. But the church must move to be a voice of love in a time where, across the globe, the rhetoric of fear, hate, and exclusion growls louder every minute.

 

The world does not submit to the will of God.

I choose to submit.

 

Let us stand in prayer,

Lord,

The present darkness

Grows

Thicker.

Won’t you thunder

Let there be

Love

مدونة #52 – هل مشيئة الله أن يتم انتخاب دونالد ترامب؟

دونالد ترامب هو الرئيس الجديد للولايات المتحدة الأمريكية

وهذه هي الحقيقة رقم 1 على أذهان معظم الناس اليوم

صدمة، أليس كذلك؟

بينما يستوعب الأمريكيون وباقي العالم هذا الخبر، استوقفني كيف أن الكثير من أصدقائي  على فايسبوك كانت ردة فعلهم هي الحقيقة رقم 2

انها مشيئة الله أن يصبح ترامب رئيسا

حقا؟

هل الله مسيطر على الدنيا؟ هل يسيطر على كل التفاصيل؟

لدي مشكلة مع هذا الطرح لسببين بسيطين

اذا كان كل شيئ هو مشيئة الله، فلماذا العالم سيئ للغاية؟

اذا كان الله مسيطر على كل التفاصيل، اذا هو يقوم بعمل سيئ جدا

لو كان الله حقا هو المسيطر والعالم يتحرك بحسب ارادته، واذا كان هو الإله المحب الذي نتكلم عنه ونراه في المسيح، فلكان العالم مكان أفضل بكثير مما هو عليه اليوم

ماذا عن الإرادة الحرة؟

هل اختار الله أن يصبح هيتلر رئيسا لالمانيا؟ هل بدأ الله الحرب في سوريا؟ هل خطط الله لهجمات باريس؟ هل يقوم الله ببيع ملايين النساء في الاتجار الجنسي؟ هل سكر الله، قاد سيارة، ودهس الناس؟

أنا اؤمن بشدة بصلاح الله

أن لا اؤمن أن الله يسبب الفوضى بل أن الله هو الذي يصرخ “ليكن نور” فوق الفوضى وبداخلها

انا اؤمن بشدة باله يأخذ الشر الذي هو صليب المسيح ويحوله لخلاص لكل العالم

العالم الذي نعيش فيه اليوم هو مكان ظلمة – كما قال الرسول بولس (أنا أيضا أعرف الكتب المقدسة) هذا العالم هو “الظلام القائم” المحكوم من قوات وأسياد تقف ضد مشيئة الله – وفي يوم من الأيام سوف يغير الله ظلام بابل الحالي إلى نور خليقة جديدة

الى حين مجيء ذلك الوقت، دعونا لا نجلس بلا عمل بينما الظلام يمتد من حولنا. بل دعونا نحمل السلاح ونكافح كفاحنا الشريف، عاملين بجد لنكون صوت المحبة والحق في عالم ينجرف نحو الكراهية

كلا، لم يسبب الله الحرب في سوريا. المال، السلطة، الغباء، والجشع سببوا الحرب. ولكن على الكنيسة أن تتحرك لتظهر المحبة للنازحين السوريين، محوّلة بذلك الحرب إلى فرصة لنكون وجود يسوع المسيح المنعم

كلا، لم يعين الله دونالد ترامب. جزء من الشعب الأمريكي انتخبه رئيسا. ولكن على الكنيسة أن تتحرك لتكون صوت المحبة في وقت، في كل أنحاء الكرة الأرضية، يرتفع صوت الخوف والكراهية والإنعزال مزمجرا

العالم لا يخضع لمشيئة الله

أنا أختار أن أخضع

 

دعونا نقف لنصلي

يا رب

الظلمة القائمة

تنمو

وتمدد

ألا تزمجر

ليكن نور

آمين

 

I Stand with Omran Daqneesh – أقف مع عمران دقنيش

These are famous pictures now. They are stills taken from a camera roll – a fitting irony for us comfortable viewers behind our screens: it is a still for us but a rolling nightmare for him, them, everyone with a Syrian identity in these cursed times.

Omran Daqneesh, a young boy of not more than 5, sits dazed on a chair as he waits medical assistance.

He has just been removed from the rubble of his bombed house in Aleppo.

What was the first question you asked yourself when you first saw the picture?

C’mon, be honest with yourself, nobody can hear you.

Is his family alive?

Will he be okay?

Is he with the Syrian regime or with the opposition?

Who bombed his house?

The main question is: is what is happening to Omran, the thousands in Aleppo, the millions of Syrians, right? Good? Ethical? Understandable? Necessary? Necessary? Necessary?

That is the key question my friends!!! Is what happened to Omran Daqneesh necessary?

Is there no other way? Is this the only way for the opposition to fight the regime and the only way for the Syrian regime to fight the opposition?

If I am completely honest with myself, and you, part of me rationalizes the event in the following manner:

Omran is living in rebel-controlled Aleppo – the regime has to fight the rebels – what is happening is natural and necessary because many of the rebels are terrorists.

But the picture of Omran Daqneesh breaks my rational line of thought, shatters my logic, and throws all my political allegiances into turmoil.

Do I really want to be on the side of a man, institution, regime, organization that is ready to do this to people just to stay in power?

Are we that cold-hearted that we are ready to turn a blind eye to horrific crimes just because we follow a certain political leader or ideology?

Is there no middle ground? Do I have to be either with this side, accepting all they do, or with the other side, also accepting all they do?

Tonight, without fully understanding what that means, I choose the side of Omran Daqneesh.

Omran, I hope one day you can cry.

I hope you cry for many hours.

I hope your tears erase the shock and dirt and blood.

I hope the war stops, regardless of who wins, and regardless of which ideology is victorious.

I hope you get to live your childhood in a home that does not collapse over your head.

Let us stand in prayer:

Lord,

You sit in shock

With a bloody head,

We stand as stone

With bloody hands

هل هو مع النظام السوري أم المعارضة؟

من قصف بيته؟

والسؤال الأساسي هو: هل ما يحدث مع عمران ، الآلاف في حلب، الملايين من السوريين، صحيح؟ جيد؟ اخلاقي؟ ضروري؟ ضروري؟ضروري؟

هذا هو السؤال المفتاحي يا أصدقائي!!! هل ما حدث مع عمران دقنيش ضروري؟

ألا توجد طريقة أخرى؟ هل هذه هي الطريقة الوحيدة لتحارب المعارضة النظام والطريقة الوحيدة ليحارب النظام المعارضة؟

إذا كنت صادقا بالكامل مع نفسي، ومعكم، فسأعترف بأن جزءا مني يبرر الحادثة على الطريقة التالية

عمران يعيش في مناطق سيطرة الثوار – على النظام أن يحارب الثوار – الذي يحدث طبيعي وضروري لأن عدد كبير من الثوار ارهابي

ولكن صورة عمران دقنيش تكسّر حبل أفكاري المنطقي، وتجتاح تبريراتي، وترمي بكل ولاءاتي السياسية نحو البحر المتكسر

هل أريد حقا أن أكون في صف رجل، مؤسسة، نظام، جمعية مستعدة أن تفعل هذا بالناس لتبقى في السلطة؟

هل نحن حقا قاسي القلوب لدرجة أننا ندير وجوهنا عن هذه الجرائم المروعة فقط لأننا نتبع قائد أو فكر سياسي معين؟

ألا يوجد طريق وسطي؟ هل علي أن أكون مع هذا الجانب وأقبل كل ما يفعلونه أو مع الجانب الآخر وأقبل كل ما يفعلونه؟

الليلة، بدون أن أفهم ما يعنيه الأمر كليا، أختار صف عمران دقنيش

عمران، أتمنى أن تبكي في يوم من الأيام

أتمنى أن تبكي لساعات طويلة

أتمنى أن تمحي دموعك الصدمة والغبار والدم

أتمنى أن تتوقف الحرب، بغض النظر عمن يربح، أو أي فكر ينتصر

أتمنى أن تعيش طفولة لا تخاف فيها أن يسقط سقف منزلك عليك

God has called me to move to the USA – دعاني الله للسفر للولايات المتحدة الأمريكية

No, he did not. Relax. Or maybe, sorry to disappoint you.

I am staying.

Although I am disturbed by the recent wave of people applying to leave the Middle East and live in the USA, Canada, Australia, UK, and now Germany.

Now, just so I am clear from the start, I do understand that people choose to leave. Life in this part of the world is not usually fun or dignified. I also understand that for many leaving was the only option to stay alive, literally.

Believe me, I have seen 1^st world countries. They are amazing! Everything is organized and clean, and you are treated with respect.

What I find disturbing is placing God into people’s decision to flee.

More often than not, people leaving tend to say: God has called me to go to this country.

He might have. Who am I to judge?

I do find it funny that I haven’t heard in the recent years that God has called anyone to go to a third world country. Nobody has walked up to me and said: God has called me to go to Iraq, or India, or Ethiopia. No, it seems God has a need for a lot (millions it seems) of Christian Arabs to serve him in first world countries.

Although, as I remember, Jesus never called us to follow him to experience an easy life. His very words were: If you want to follow me you have to take up your cross and die of yourself. His very words were: ask first for the Kingdom of God and all the other things (you know, things you need to survive) will be added to you.

What I see as I look at the Arab Jesus followers today is the motto: seek first the foreign passport and then worry about God’s Kingdom.

I also see Arab Jesus followers who are choosing to stay! Yes, pastors who are staying in war-torn areas and faithful Christians who daily live in poor conditions and place their trust in God.

In his excellent article (please take a few minutes and read it), Dr. Accad argues that if you are choosing to stay, you must have a reason to do so. He then goes on to speak of a theology of staying which is missing from our churches. To put it simply (and summarize in a few words), if you choose to stay then you do so out of trust in God and a realistic acceptance of the presence of evil in this world.

I am aware that this simple blog will not convince the hundreds of thousands of Arab Jesus-followers to stay.

But please, if you choose to leave, then do not thrust God into the picture just to make yourself feel better. Say it as it is: I am leaving because I am searching for an easier life.

Please, if you are still around, be encouraged, there are many still here. Before you look West or East, look upwards and place your trust in God. Before you look West or East look around you, and see God working in this place, in this time. Will you join him?

God has called me to stay.

He has willed that I be born in this land.

He has willed that I speak the language of this land.

I will stay with my people. I will live with them and I will die with them. What happens to them happens to me.

If we all leave, who will be light and salt?

Let us stand to pray:

Lord,

We spend years seeking a new life,

كلا، لم يدعني الله. استريحوا. أو ربما، آسف لتخييب ظنّكم

أنا سأبقى

مع أنني مزعوج من موجة الهجرة للناس من الشرق الأوسط إلى الولايات المتحدة وكندا وأوستراليا وإنكلترا والأن ألمانيا

لكي أكون واضح من البداية، أنا أفهم أن الناس يختارون الرحيل. الحياة في هذا الجزء من العالم عادة ليست مسلية أو محترمة. أنا أيضا أفهم أنه للكثيرين قرار الذهاب كان القرار الوحيد الموجود للبقاء على قيد الحياة

صدقوني، أنا رأيت دول العالم الأول. هي رائعة! البلاد منظمة ونظيفة، ويتم معاملتك باحترام

ولكن ما يزعجني هو زج إسم الله في قرار الناس بالرحيل

عادة ما يقول الناس الذين ينوون الرحيل: الله دعاني للذهاب إلى ذلك البلد

قد يكون فعل ذلك. من أنا لأحكم على الناس؟

الأمر المضحك هو أنني لم أسمع في السنين الماضة أن الله دعا احدهم للذهاب إلى بلد من بلاد العالم الثالث. لم يقل لي احد: الله دعاني للذهاب للعراق أو الهند أوإثيوبيا. كلا، بل يبدو أن الله بحاجة لملايين من المسيحيين العرب ليخدموه في بلاد العالم الأول

مع أنني أتذكر أن يسوع لم يدعنا لنختبر حياة سهلة. كلماته كانت: إذا أردت أن تتبعني فيجب أن تحمل صليبك وتموت عن نفسك. كلماته كانت: اطلبوا أولا ملكوتالله وكل الأشياء (كل الأشياء التي تحتاجها لكي تعيش) سوف تزاد لكم

عندما أنظر لأتباع المسيح العرب اليوم أرى أن شعارهم هو: اطلبوا أولا الباسبورت الأجنبي ومن ثم اهتموا بملكوت الله

أرى أيضا أتباع عرب للمسيح يختارون البقاء! نعم هناك قساوسة يختارون البقاء في مناطق حرب ومسيحيين أمناء يعيشون في ظروف فقيرة ويضعون ثقتهم بالله

في مقالته الرائع يقول الدكتور عقاد أنه إن اخترت البقاء فيجب أن يكون لديك سبب لتفعل ذلك. ومن ثم يستمر ليتكلم عن لاهوت البقاء وهو لاهوت ناقص من كنائسنا. وألخص ما قاله بكلمات قليلة وهو أنه إن اخترت أن تبقى فأنت تفعل ذلك انطلاقا من ثقتك بالله وقبولك بوجود الشر في العالم

أنا أعي أن هذه المدونة البسيطة لن تقنع مئات آلاف أتباع المسيح العرب بالبقاء

ولكن أرجوكم، إذا اخترتم الرحيل فلا تزجّوا اسم الله في الصورة لكي تشعروا بتحسن. قولوا الأمر كما هو: أنا أرحل لأنني أبحث عن حياة أسهل

أرجوكم، إذا كنتم ما زلتم هنا، تشجعوا، هناك كثيرين ما زالوا هنا. قبل أن تنظروا للغرب أو الشرق أنظروا إلى فوق وضعوا ثقتكم بالله. قبل أن تنظروا للغرب أو الشرق انظروا حولكم وراقبوا أعمال الله في هذا المكان وفي هذا الوقت. هل تريدون الإنضمام إليه؟

الله دعاني لأبقى

هو شاء أن أولد في هذه الأرض

هو شاء أن أتكلم لغة هذه الأرض

سوف أبقى مع شعبي. سوف أحيا مع شعبي وسوف أموت مع شعبي. الذي يحصل معهم يحصل معي

إذا رحلنا كلنا، فمن سيكون النور والملح؟
