Thai Boys in a Cave and Gaza Children in a Cage – صبيان تايلاند في كهف وأطفال غزة في حبس

Over the last weeks the entire world turned its attention to the 12 Thai boys, and their coach, who were trapped in an underground cage for weeks after a surprise flood.

Divers from around the world tried to help, and world media updated us daily on their fate.

At the very same time, but not for years rather than weeks, the people of Gaza continue to live in horrible conditions (the UN said that Gaza will become unlivable in 2020). About 1,200,000 are under the age of 25 (66% of the population).

The same can be said about the children of Syria, Yemen, and a myriad of other places around the globe.

Now, this is not a nagging post. I am not here to say that the Media, especially in the West, only cares about certain problems.

I am also aware that thousands of individuals and NGOs around the world are trying to help Gaza.

I am simply asking: What made the world come together to help those 12 boys (whom I am overjoyed that they got saved) while it remains ignorant of the plight of 1.2 million children and young adults in Gaza?

Both groups are similar. Both are stuck. The first in a small cage, and the second in a small piece of land – an open prison; they are surrounded by a strict Israeli blockade.

What makes the world care for one group and ignore the second, although the Gaza children are in more danger, their problem has been going on for way more time, and there is no foreseeable solution up ahead?

Perhaps the answers are the in the question.

Perhaps the Gaza crisis overwhelms us. We freeze. I know it happens to me. Where do I start? How do I help? We are talking about millions of Palestinians in constant distress. What can I do?

Perhaps the major wars, Syria, Yemen, and others, overwhelm us. What do we do in the face of huge disaster? What can we do in the face of millions of immigrants, millions of dead children, millions of hungry faces, and millions of stories seeking attention and resolution?

Perhaps the story of the 12 Thai boys is simple. Limited. 12 boys. 1 cave. Get divers in. Get the boys out. A crisis for 2-3 weeks. It is done. It is very dangerous, yes. These boys could have died, yes. But it was limited.

A good friend from Germany, pastor Eric Smith, once told me, and I don’t know if he was quoting anyone: “Do for one what you would like to do for many.”

I would love to free the people of Gaza. I would love to feed the hungry of Syria. I would love to stop the war in Yemen.

But I can’t. I am overwhelmed.

I will contact a local NGO that helps Palestinians and give a small donation.

I will visit a Syrian refugee family that lives nearby and share food.

I will walk in a demonstration to end the war in Yemen.

I will move. I will not be overwhelmed.

Whether it is 12 or 1.2 million people in distress.

I will not be silent.

 

I love one the metaphor Jesus used to explain the Kingdom of God. It is a small seed that grows into a huge tree.

 

Let us stand in prayer

Lord,

Bury me in the ground,

Small and weak.

Raise us a tree

Mighty and green

To be a shade in the burning sun

في الأسابيع الماضية انشغل العالم بالصبية ال12 من تايلاند ومدربهم العالقين في كهف تحت الأرض بعد حدوث فيضان فجائي

حاول غطاسون من حول العالم المساعدة، ودأبت وسائل الإعلام العالمية على إعلامنا بكل جديد يوميا

بنفس الوقت، ولسنوات وليس اسابيع، استمر شعب غزة في العيش في ظروف مروعة (وقد صرحت الأمم المتحدة أن غزة ستصبح غير صالحة للحياة بحلول سنة 2020). حوالي 1،200،000 شخص (أي 66% من السكان) هم تحت عمر 25

نستطيع أن نقول أمور مماثلة عن أطفال سوريا واليمن وعدة مناطق حول العالم

لنكن واضحين، هذه ليست مدونة للنق. لا أريد أن أقول أن الإعلام، وخصوصا في الغرب، يركز فقط على بعض المشاكل

أنا أيضا أعرف أنه يوجد آلاف الأشخاص والجمعيات من حول العالم تحاول مساعدة غزة

ولكنني أسأل بكل بساطة: ماذا يدفع العالم للتوحد لمساعدة الصبية ال12 (وأنا سعيد للغاية بخبر خلاصهم) بينما يجهل معظم الناس معاناة 1.2 مليون طفل وشابة في غزة؟

المجموعتان مماثلتان. الإثنان  عالقان. الأول في كهف والثاني في قطعة أرض صغيرة – حبس في الهواء الطلق ومحاطا بحصار إسرائيلي صارم

ماذا يدفع العالم للإهتمام بالمجموعة الأولى وتجاهل الثانية، مع أن أطفال غزة في خطر أكبر ومشكلتهم مر عليها وقت أطول ولا يوجد حل في الأفق؟

ربما الجواب في السؤال

ربما مشكلة غزة تبتلعنا. نتجمد أمامها. أعرف أن الأمر يحصل معي. من أين أبدأ؟ كيف أساعد؟ نحن نتكلم عن ملايين الفلسطينيين في ألم مستمر. ماذا أفعل؟

ربما كل الحروب الرئيسية، من سوريا لليمن لباقي المناطق، تخنقنا. ماذا نفعل في مواجهة مصيبة ضخمة؟ ماذا نفعل في مواجهة وجوه ملايين النازحين وملايين القتلى زملايين الجائعين وملايين القصص التي تطلب انتباهنا وحلولنا؟

ربما قصة الصبيان ال12 بسيطة. محدودة. 12 صبي. كهف واحد. يدخل الغطاسون. يخرج الأولاد. مصيبة ل2-3 أسابيع. انتهت. خطرة جدا، نعم. واجه الصبيان الموت، نعم. ولكنها محدودة

قال لي صديقي العزيز إريك سميث، وهو قسيس الماني، ولا أعرف ان كان يقتبس أحدهم – افعل بالواحد ما تتمنى أن تفعل بالجميع

أحب أن أحرر أهل غزة. أحب أن أطعم جياع سوريا. أحب أن أوقف الحرب في اليمن

لا استطيع. أنا أختنق

سأتصل بجمعية محلية تساعد الفلسطينيين وأتبرع بملغ صغير

سأزور عائلة سورية نازحة تعيش بجانبي وأشاركهم الطعام

سأمشي في مظاهرة ضد الحرب في اليمن

What if the Palestinians were Kurdish? ماذا لو كان الفلسطينيون أكراد؟

Dear Arabs,

What if the Palestinians were Kurdish? Would we care about the fact that they have no country?

What if the Israelis were all Muslim? Would we monitor their terrorist actions against the Palestinian people?

What if the Armenians were Muslim? Would we then care about the Turkish genocide against them?

What if the Turks were Christians? Would we turn a blind eye towards their human right abuse against the Kurds?

What if our domestic workers were white? Would we treat them like animals?

 

Do we truly care about injustice, or do we simply care about protecting our own clan?

Will we ever truly care about injustice?

Will we support the Palestinians, and the Kurds, and the Armenians – all peoples of this region?

Is it a possibility, or is it a dream?

 

Do we truly care about all kinds of injustice?

How can we shout for freedom for Palestinians, but remain silent while millions of Arab women are abused and treated like second-class citizens?

How can we march in the streets against corruption, while we continue to be too lazy to start to recycle our garbage and protect our environment?

 

Are we a schizophrenic people? Are we nations and individuals who love to shout “injustice” only when it suits us?

 

I know, I know that the other nations of the world (maybe) are not better. I know that one cannot care about all injustice in the world at once.

But can we, at least, try to be consistent?

 

I truly believe that until we begin to respect all life, until we begin to speak up against all injustice, we will remain countries sinking in corruption and war. We will remain countries that are open to colonization and abuse.

Unless all life becomes equal, and all humans are treated the same, we are destined to continue to be people marching against the oppressed today and marching with the oppressor tomorrow.

Who is my neighbour?

ماذا لو كان الفلسطينيون أكراد؟

يا عرب

ماذا لو كان الفلسطينيون أكراد؟ هل كنا سنهتم بحقيقة عدم حصولهم على وطن؟

ماذا لو كان الإسرائيليون مسلمين؟ هل كنا سنراقب أعمالهم الإرهابية تجاه الشعب الفلسطيني؟

ماذا لو كان الأرمن مسلمين؟ هل كنا سنهتم حينها بالإبادة التركية ضدهم؟

ماذا لو كان الأتراك مسيحيين؟ هل كنا سنتغاضى عن سوء معاملتهم ووحشيتهم تجاه الأكراد؟

ماذا لو كانت عاملات المنازل بيض؟ هل كنا سنعاملهم كالحيوانات؟

هل نهتم حقا بالظلم، أو هل ببساطة نهتم بحماية قبيلتنا؟

هل سيأتي يوم نهتم فيه حقا بالظلم؟

هل ندعم الفلسطينيين والأكراد والأرمن – كل شعوب هذه الأرض؟

هل هذا احتمال وارد أم مجرد حلم؟

هل نهتم بكل أنواع الظلم؟

كيف نصرخ مطالبين بالحرية للفلسطينيين ولكن نبقى صامتين تجاه الإسائة لملايين من النساء العرب ومعاملتهم كأنهن مواطنات مرتبة ثانية؟

كيف نتظاهر في الشوارع ضد الفساد ولكن نستمر في الكسل لدرجة أننا لا نبدأ بإعادة تدوير الزبالة لحماية البيئة؟

هل نحن شعب منفصم؟ هل نحن شعوب وأفراد نهوى أن نصرخ “ظلم” فقط عندما الأمر يناسبنا؟

أعلم، أعلم أن باقي شعوب الأرض (ربما) ليست أفضل منا. أعلم أننا لا نستطيع أن نهتم بكل الظلم في كل العالم في آن معا

ولكن ألا نستطيع، على الأقل، أن نكون ثابتين في موقفنا؟

أؤمن حقا أنه حتى نبدأ باحترام كل الحياة، وحتى نبدأ بمجابهة كل الظلم، سنبقى دولا غارقة في الفساد والحرب. سنبقى دولا مفتوحة للإستعمار والإساءة

إذا لم تكن كل أنواع الحياة متساوية، وإذا لم نعامل كل البشر بمساواة، فنحن مقدّر لنا أن نستمر بالمسير مع المظلوم اليوم ومع الظالم غدا

Shithole Kingdom – ملكوت القرف

I read a book last month about Jesus written by a Muslim scholar. He quotes the following teaching of Jesus as proof that the Jesus we see in the gospels is not authentic:

If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters yes, even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Luke 14:26

He argues that a real prophet would not say these things.

Society in general has a certain image of Jesus. Jesus is kind. Jesus is merciful. Jesus is loving. Jesus is a teddy bear that I hug at night to feel safe.

Yes, Jesus might be all of the above (even the teddy bear), but if you read his teachings you realize that he does not call us into a safe and easy life. He does not call us only into friendship with God. No! He calls us to worship God.

What is worship? As we saw in the verse above, worship is COMPLETE obedience to God and trust in him alone. Worship means seeking to be more like Jesus day after day!

You see, Jesus ushered in the kingdom of God. This kingdom has some amazing values. Kingdom values teach us to love our enemy. Kingdom values teach us to share our money and possessions with those who have less than us. Kingdom values teach us to be faithful in our marriages and relationships. Kingdom values teach us to pray for those who hate us and bless those who curse us.

The problem is that our society is not run by kingdom values. Actually, if you look closely, it is mostly run on anti-Kingdom values. So, if you want to be part of the kingdom of God which Jesus is leading you will have to butt heads with society more often than not.

What do we see of today’s Christianity?

Now you think I will start talking here about drinking, drugs, and immorality…Although those are all valid points to make, I won’t make them here. Let the pastors do that on Sunday.

What do we see of today’s Christianity?

I see Christians who are loyal to their family, tribe, race, political party, and country more than their loyalty to Christ and his kingdom!

President Trump exhibits blatant racism. What does the majority of the white church in the US do? Nothing. Even more yet, some continue to defend his words.

Our Christian (at least in name) political leaders in Lebanon daily exhibit blatant racism towards the Syrian refugees. What does the majority of the church in Lebanon do? Nothing. Even more yet, some echo this racist rhetoric.

Millions of Christians around the world blindly support the state of Israel as it continues to savagely oppress the Palestinians just because most of the Palestinians are Muslims, and we can care less about them (and because of some sick theology…but that will have to wait).

Is history bound to repeat itself?

Is the church bound to defend Hitler, slavery, oppressive regimes, sexual abuse, the oppression of women, and all kinds of corruption?

Yes, I know, there were beautiful Jesus-like Christians throughout history who exhibited and defended the values of the Kingdom of God against all odds. I know that the church instilled in society some amazing values.

But for every “good” Christian out there we bump into five that show more loyalty to tribe and race and money than they show loyalty to the way of Christ.

I was deeply saddened to see hundreds of my American friends (and Lebanese friends who think they are American) who constantly attack all political, religious, and social figures who oppose their agenda and who constantly defend Trump suddenly grow silent on social media after the president mocked the poor nations of this world.

I was also deeply overjoyed to see tens of my American friends issue messages of love and solidarity with the poor nations of this world.

Which kingdom do I follow?

The shithole one or the Jesus one?

Let us stand in prayer:

Lord,

Help us die,

Of the things that make us angry,

Help us live,

For the things that make you smile.

ملكوت القرف

قرأت الشهر الماضي كتاب  من عالم مسلم. يقتبس التعليم التالي من يسوع ويستخدمه ليبرهن أن المسيح الذي نراه في الإنجيل ليس حقيقيا

ان كان احد ياتي الي ولا يبغض اباه وامه وامراته واولاده واخوته واخواته حتى نفسه ايضا فلا يقدر ان يكون لي تلميذا. لوقا 14: 26

يحاجج أن نبي حقيقي لن يقول هكذا عبارة

المجتمع بشكل عام لديه صورة معينة عن يسوع. يسوع حنون. يسوع رحوم. يسوع محب. يسوع مثل الدبدوب تعانقه وأنت نائم لتشعر بالأمان

نعم، يسوع كل هذه الأشياء (حتى الدبدوب) ولكن إن قرأت تعاليمه تدرك أنه لا يدعوك إلى حياة آمنة وسهلة. لا يدعوك فقط ليكون لك صداقة مع الله بل يدعوك بالأحرى لتعبد الله!

ما هي العبادة؟ كما رأينا في الآية أعلاه العبادة هي الطاعة الكاملة والثقة الوحيدة في الله. العبادة تعني أن أسعى كل يوم لأشبه يسوع أكثر

المسيح يا عزيزي أعلن بدء ملكوت الله. ولدى هذا الملكوت بعض القيم المذهلة. قيم الملكوت تعلمنا أن نحب الأعداء. قيم الملكوت تعلمنا أن نشارك أموالنا ومقتنياتنا مع من يمتلكون أقل منا. قيم الملكوت تعلمنا الأمانة في الزواج والعلاقات. قيم الملكوت تعلمنا أن نصلي من أجل من يكرهنا ونبارك من يلعننا

المشكلة أن مجتمعنا لا يسير على قيم الملكوت. بل بالعكس هو يسير على قيم تكاد تكون مضادة لقيم الملكوت. إذا، إن أردت أن تكون جزء من ملكوت الله الذي يقوده يسوع فعليك أن تتصادم مع المجتمع في كثير من الأحيان

ماذا نرى في المسيحية اليوم؟

تعتقد الأن أنني سأتحدث عن شرب الكحول والمخدرات وانحلال الأخلاق. هذه كلها نقاط صائبة. ولكنني لن أتكلم عنها هنا. سأتركها للرعاة يوم الأحد

ماذا نرى في المسيحية اليوم؟

نرى مسيحيين يدينون بالولاء للعائلة والقبيلة والعرق والحزب والوطن أكثر من ولائهم للمسيح وملكوته!

أظهر الرئيس ترامب تمييز عنصري فاجر. ماذا فعلت أغلبية الكنيسة البيضاء في الولايات المتحدة الإمبريالية؟ لا شيء. لا بل دافع البعض عن كلامه

زعماؤنا المسيحيين (بالإسم على الأقل) يقومون يوميا بالتهجم العنصري على اللاجئين السوريين. ماذا تفعل أغلبية الكنيسة في لبنان؟ لا شيء. لا بل يقوم البعض بترداد الكلام المسيء

ملايين المسيحيين حول العالم يؤيدون إسرائيل بدون وعي بينما يستمر الكيان الصهيوني بنهجه الظالم والعنيف تجاه الفلسطينيون فقط لأن أغلبية الشعب الفلسطيني مسلمين وبسبب لاهوت مريض سنتناوله في أحد الأيام المقبلة

هل محتم على التاريخ أن يكرر نفسه؟

هل يتحتم على الكنيسة أن تؤيد هيتلر والعبودية والأنظمة الظالمة والإعتداء الجنسي والتمييز ضد المرأة وكل انواع الفساد؟

نعم، أعرف أنه يوجد كثير من أتباع المسيح المذهلين خلال التاريخ الذين دافعوا عن قيم ملكوت الله ضد كل الصعاب. أعرف أن الكنيسة قدمت كثير من القيم الرائعة للمجتمع

ولكن بوجه كل مسيحي “جيد” تجد خمس مسيحيين يدينون بالولاء للقبيلة أو العرق أو المال أكثر من ولائهم لطريق المسيح

حزنت كثيرا عندما رأيت مئات من أصدقائي الأمريكيين (وبعض أصدقائي اللبنانيين الذين يعتقدون أنهم أمريكيين) والذين باستمرار يتهجمون على كل الشخصيات السياسية والدينية والإجتماعية التي تعاكس أجندتهم والذين باستمرار يدافعون عن ترامب، رأيتهم صامتون على وسائل التواصل الإجتماعي بعد أن هزء ترامب من البلاد الفقيرة في العالم

وأيضا فرحت كثيرا بعشرات أصدقائي الأمريكيين الذين أصدروا رسائل حب ودعم لبلدان العالم الفقيرة

أي ملكوت تتبع؟

Do the Palestinians Deserve Jerusalem? هل يستحق الفلسطينيين القدس؟

 

I regularly share articles, pictures, and posts that speak up against Israel and defend Palestine on social media.

I regularly hear theological arguments from well-meaning Christians about how the Israelis have an ancient God-given right to this land.

I will not answer those here. If you still think that after the coming of Jesus God uses genetic tests to assign certain lands to certain people, then I do not think anything I can say will convince you otherwise.

I also regularly get social media feedback from well-meaning friends who argue the land of Palestine is better off in the hands of the civilised Zionists than the hands of the violent Palestinians – particularly Muslim extremists groups such as Hamas.

To those, I will answer.

I do not like Hamas, or other extremist groups.

Although a great number of Muslims care for the Palestinian cause, the Palestinian cause is not a religious issue.

What is the Palestinian cause then?

At its root, it is a very simple case:

• Before 1948, the land was called Palestine. It was inhabited mostly by Arabs.
• In 1948, after Israel was formed, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were expelled from their homes.
• From then till now, despite numerous UN resolutions that call for an equal division of the land between the Palestinians and the Israelis, Israel continues to annex more land, kick out more Palestinian families, and continue to make it almost impossible to form a Palestinian state.

The table have turned. Prior to 1948, Palestinians had a country. They had homes, fields, and hundreds of years of presence. After 1948 they found themselves refugees in a new country called Israel or in numerous countries around the world.

What is the issue then? It is an issue of justice! A simple, a straightforward kindergarten-level case of “stealing is wrong.”

I am painfully aware that giving Palestinians all the land back today will mean kicking out the Israelis who have been living there for over two generations now. In fact, most Palestinians today agree to share the land equally. The Israelis keep their new state, and the Palestinians regain theirs.

Decisions such as the one taken by Trump to ignore Palestinian heritage and continue to increase the size and powers of Israel will not help bring peace.

Now we come back to those worried that the Palestinians are barbarians.

It is, again, a very simple case.

Palestine was stolen from the Palestinians.

They deserve to have it back. All they are asking for is part of it really.

Now, dear well-meaning friend, what they choose to do with their land is non of your business.

Palestinians might choose to be ruled by Islamic law. It is their choice.

They might choose to create a secular government. It is their choice.

They might choose to have a civil war and kill each other for 100 years. It is their choice.

They might choose to walk around in their underpants while worshiping the sun. It is their choice.

Not one single country on this planet is every told: Look, if you misbehave we will take your country away from you.

The Palestinian cause is one of justice.

هل يستحق الفلسطينيون القدس؟

أشارك بشكل معتاد صور ومقالات وبوستات على وسائل التواصل الإجتماعي تدافع عن فلسطين

وأسمع بشكل معتاد حجج لاهوتية من مسيحيين أمناء عن أن الإسرائيليين يمتلكون حقا إلهيا قديما على الارض

لن أرد عليها هنا. إذا كنت لا زلت تعتقد أنه بعد مجيء يسوع الله يستخدم الفحوصات الجينية ليعين أراضي معينة لشعوب معينة فلا أعتقد أنني أستطيع أن أقنعك بالعكس

أتلقى أيضا بشكل مستمر ردود فعل على وسائل التواصل الإجتماعي من أصدقاء طيبين حيث يقولون أنه من الأفضل لأرض فلسطين أن تكون في يد الصهاينة المتمدنين على أن تكون بيد الفلسطينين العنيفين – خاصة الأحزاب الإسلامية المتطرفة مثل حماس

سوف أرد على اولئك

انا لا احب حماس ولا المجموعات المتطرفة الاخرى

ومع ان عدد كبير من السلمين يناصرون القضية الفلسطينية، القضية الفلسطينية ليست قضية دينية

ما هي اذا القضية الفلسطينية؟

جذورها بسيطة جدا

• قبل 1948 كانت الارض هذه تدعى فلسطين. كان معظم سكانها من العرب
• عام 1948 قامت دولة اسرائيل. تم طرد مئات آلاف الفلسطينيين من بيوتهم
• منذ ذلك الوقت، وبالرغم من عدة قرارات للامم المتحدة، دأبت إسرائيل على إضافة اراضي جديدة وطرد عائلات فلسطينية جديدة واستمرت بجعل اقامة دولة فلسطينية امر شبه مستحيل

لقد انقلبت الطاولة. قبل 1948 كان للفسطينيون وطن. كان لديهم بيوت وحقول ووجود يمتد لمئات السنين. بعد 1948 وجدوا أنفسهم إما لاجئين في بلد جديد يدعى إسرائيل أو لاجئين في بلاد عديدة حول العالم

ما هي القضية هنا؟ انها قضية عدالة! قضية سهلة ومباشرة وترتقي لمستوى الحضانة، ونلخصها بعبارة: السرقة غلط

أنا أعرف للاسف ان استرجاع كامل الاراضي الفلسطينية من قبل الفلسطينيين سيعني طرد الإسرائيليين الذين عاشوا هنا لاكثر من جيلين. معظم الفلسطينيين اليوم يرضى بمشاركة الارض بالمساواة. يحتفظ الإسرائيليون بوطنهم الجديد ويُعاد بناء وطن فلسطيني

قرارات مثل قرار ترامب الأخير والتي تتجاهل التراث الفلسطيني وتستمر بإعطاء إسرائيل مزيد من الحقوق والحجم والسلطة لن تجلب السلام

ونعود الان للقلق من أن الفلسطينيون برابرة

مرة أخرى، القضية سهلة

تمة سرقة فلسطين من الفلسطينيين

يستحقون أن يستعيدوها. وهم اليوم يطلبون بالحقيقة جزءا منها

فيا أيها الاصدقاء الطيبين، ما يختار أن يفعله الفلسطينيون بأرضهم ليس من شأنكم

قد يختار الفلسطينيون حكم الإسلام. هذا خيارهم

قد يختاروا تشكيل حكومة علمانية. هذا خيارهم

قد يختاروا إقامة حرب أهلية والتقاتل فيما بينهم لمدة 100 عام. هذا خيارهم

قد يختاروا المشي عراة في الطرقات وعبادة الشمس. هذا خيارهم

ولا بلد على هذه الكرة الأرضية يُقال له: إسمع، إن لم تحسنوا السلوك فسناخذ وطنكم منكم

القضية الفلسطينية قضية عدالة

أرجعوا الأرض المسروقة للفلسطينيين. ماذا يفعلون بها، كيف يحكمونها، أو كيف يختاروا العيش فيها هو شأنهم وليس شأنك أو شأني!

Should We Silence the Gays of Lebanon? هل يجب أن نُسكت مثليي لبنان؟

Last week was LGBT Pride week in Lebanon, the first of its kind in the Arab world.

A number of events were organized in the country. However, not all events went well. The League of Muslim Scholars in Lebanon opposed a 1-day conference organized by the NGO Proud Lebanon, and the hotel management had to cancel out of fear of security problems. Another event by the LGBT rights NGO Helem was also cancelled for similar reasons.

Now you might think that being gay is unnatural.

Your religious beliefs might label homosexuality as a sin.

You might be against gay marriages.

The very sight of gays might even, for lack of a better word, disgust you.

But do you have the right to ban homosexuals from organizing events, expressing their opinions, or showing their colours?

I think not! Allow me to present my reasons:

 

• Gays are here to stay

By banning events, criminalizing homosexuality, or even killing gays, you won’t end homosexuality. Some people in our society are gay. There is no getting around it. There is no hiding it. Pushing them under the rug won’t solve the issue at hand. So as much as their presence might anger you, it is not really within your power to make them disappear.

If truth be said, probably some people or group in Lebanon would love it if you or your tribe disappeared (probably many people would want me to disappear). But that is not how life works.

Sorry Muslims, but Christianity is not dying off.

Sorry Christians, but Muslims are not getting shipped to another planet.

Sorry Israelis, but forming a Zionist state in 1948 did not and will not make Palestinians become extinct (if anything, Palestinians are getting more babies now 😉

(sorry English Premier league clubs but Chelsea FC is going to be around for a long time 😉

And sorry heterosexual people, but gays are here to stay.

 

• Gays are not hurting you

Homosexuals are not ISIS. Their presence does not endanger yours. If they hold a conference or walk the streets in self-expression they are not hurting you or your family. Homosexuals do not have secret plots to take over the government, kill all the heterosexuals, or murder you in your sleep.

You do not really have any right to silence them. They have done nothing to hurt you.

A Christian who believes that a man should marry one woman cannot force his Muslim neighbour to commit to the same principal.

A believer can’t force all people in the country to pray.

As much as I would love to, I can’t force all people spend one hour per day reading (which, by the way, will be the first law I pass once I take command of the country and later the world).

So, since Gays are not hurting you, you have no right to fight them or oppress them.

 

What is the root of the issue here?

Perhaps it is our unwillingness to accept those who are different than us.

What was our civil war in Lebanon if not different religions refusing to co-exist?

What was the Palestinian Nakba in 1948 if not the Zionist movement refusing to grant Palestinians the right to exist?

What was the bombing in Manchester yesterday night if not an extremist group refusing to acknowledge that there is a way to live that is different than their own?

What if other people are choosing to live their lives differently than you?

What right do you have to dictate your terms of living to others?

The answer is simple: none!

الأسبوع الماضي كان أسبوع البرايد (الفخر) بالمثلية الجنسية في بيروت، وهو الأول من نوعه في العالم العربي

تم تنظيم عدد من النشاطات في لبنان. ولكن لم تسر كلها على ما يرام. احتجت هيئة علماء المسلمين في لبنان على مؤتمر ليوم واحد كانت تنظمه جمعية براود لبنان، واضطر الفندق المستضيف على الغاء الحدث خوفا من عواقب أمنية. وتم إلغاء نشاط لجمعية حلم الداعمة لحقوق المثليين لأسباب مماثلة

قد تعتقد أن المثلية أمر غير طبيعي

قد تؤمن بحسب معتقداتك الدينية أن المثلية خطية

قد تكون ضد زواج المثليين

وقد يثير فيك منظر أي مثلي، وعذرا على التعبير، الإشمئزاز

ولكن هل تمتلك الحق بمنع المثليين عن تنظيم نشاطات، التعبير عن آرائهم، وإظهار هويتهم؟

لا أعتقد ذلك! إسمح لي بعرض أسبابي

 

المثلية لن تختفي

وإن منعت النشاطات، جرّمت المثلية، أو حتى قتلت المثليين، فلن تنهي المثلية. بعض الناس في مجتمعنا مثليين. لا مفر من ذلك. لا يمكنك تغطية الموضوع. لا تستطيع إخفاء المسألة. ولو وجودهم أغضبك، فأنت لا تمتلك المقدرة على جعلهم يختفون

بالحقيقة، على الأرجح يوجد بعض الناس أو الجماعات التي تتمنى اختفاؤك أنت أو اختفاء جماعتك (على الأرجح كثير من الناس يتمنون اختفائي). ولكن الحياة لا تسير بهذه الطريقة

أنا متأسف يا مسلمين، ولكن المسيحية ليست في حالة انحدار

أنا متأسف يا مسيحيين، ولكن لا يوجد خطة لشحن المسلمين إلى كوكب آخر

أنا متأسف يا إسرائليين، ولكن إقامة وطن صهيوني عام 1948 لم ولن يقود الفلسطينيون للإنقراض – لا بل الفلسطينيون زادوا من نشاطهم الإنجابي

أنا متأسف يا فرق الدوري الإنكليزي الممتاز ولكن فريق تشيلسي سيبقى هنا لفترة طويلة

وأنا متأسف يا ذوي الميول الجنسية للجنس الآخر، ولكن المثليين لن يختفوا عن وجه الأرض

المثليون لا يشكلون أي أذى لك

المثليون ليسوا داعش. وجودهم لا يشكل خطر على وجودك. إذا أقاموا مؤتمرا أو مظاهرة للتعبير عن النفس فلن يشكلوا أذى عليك أو على عائلتك. لا يوجد خطط سرية للمثليين لقتل كل أصحاب الميول المعاكسة، أو للإستولاء على الحكم

لا تمتلك أي حق بإسكاتهم. لم يؤذوك بأي طريقة

المسيحي الذي يؤمن أن على الرجل الزواج بامرأة واحدة لا يستطيع إجبار جاره المسلم على الالتزام معه بنفس المبدأ

المؤمن لا يستطيع إجبار كل المواطنين على الصلاة

مع أنني أود ذلك بشدة ولكنني لا أستطيع إجبار كل الناس على إمضاء ساعة يوميا في القراءة – الرجاء الإنتباه أن هذا سيكون أول قرار رسمي أتخذه بعد استلامي مقاليد حكم البلاد والعباد

اذا، بما أن المثليين لا يشكلون خطر عليك، لا تمتلك الحق بأن تحاربهم أو تضطهدهم

ما هو لب المسألة هنا؟

ربما هو عدم رغبتنا بقبول من هم مختلفين عنا

ألم تكن الحرب الأهلية في لبنان رفض الأديان المختلفة التعايش؟

ألم تكن نكبة فلسطين سنة 1948 رفض الحركة الصهيونية منح الفلسطينيين حق الوجود؟

ألم تكن التفجيرات ليلة الأمس في مانشستر رفض مجموعة متطرفة الاعتراف بوجود أسلوب حياة مختلف عن أسلوبها هي؟

ماذا لو اختار الناس الآخرون أن يعيشوا حياة مختلفة عنك؟

من أعطاك الحق بفرض أسلوب حياتك على الآخرين؟

الجواب سهل: لا أحد

Is God Deaf? هل الله أطرش؟

Palestine is on my mind.

On my heart.

The state of affairs in Palestine has gone bad in the past weeks.

It was already bad. The Palestinians have been living under occupation since 1948 and Israel continues to build illegal settlements. Even Palestinians living in Israel do not have their rights.

But things have gone extra bad.

I find that I do not have energy to post articles showing the oppression (for more information read through the page of Jewish Voice for Peace on Facebook – they are Jews who speak up against Israel, just so you do not accuse me of being an anti-Semitic Semitic Arab)

I find that I do not have energy to go through theological and Biblical debates on the whole “people of God” issue. One day I will. Maybe soon. But not today.

Today I am too tired and sad to go through lengthy discussions with people who refuse to acknowledge that there is a problem to start with.

So here are my simple thoughts on the state of affairs in Palestine:

Oppression hurts even when you are not receiving it

I find that receiving instant news messages on my phone saying that yet another Palestinian child has died hurts, even though nothing has happened to me or my family.

Two weeks ago I was with an old Syrian man at the Lebanese General Security offices helping him out with his visa in Lebanon, and the police were treating him (and the other Syrians) like animals. A young officer, young enough to be his grandchild, shouted at him for five minutes in front of everyone, humiliating him. I found myself hurt, though the officer hadn’t shouted at me. Not just disturbed, but hurt, as if I had been humiliated.

Oppression hurts, really hurts. Is that what God feels, multiplied by a million, as he looks at the entire human race every day?

Violence will not solve the problem

Israel uses violence to protect itself. It builds high walls, bombs thousands to death in needless wars, places children in jail for throwing stones, opens fire at any suspect, and recently has started to arm its citizens so they too can commit violence.

Some Palestinians, frustrated and losing everything, have also replied in violence, using whatever meagre supplies they have (stones, knives, hands and feet).

But violence will not solve it. I am reminded of Jesus saying that when you fight by the sword you will die by the sword.

As long as Israel refuses to treat the Palestinians as humans, then it will remain stuck in a whirlpool of violence. Hate will get hate. War will get war. The Israeli people will find themselves surrounded by an angry oppressed people, and the Palestinians will find themselves suffocating in hate and oppression. Death comes out of violence, and not life.

Bad Theology is deadly

I will not argue theology in this blog.

But listen to me.

Yes, I am talking to Zionist Christians.

Listen to me!

If you need Biblical interpretation and theological arguments to convince you that killing people and taking their land is wrong, then I do not want to have that conversation with you. I pause before I can call you family.

How do I know your theology, the way you view God, is wrong? Simply because you cheer for death and hatred. I do not know your God. I do not worship your God. I worship a God who summarized all of the law with the call to love.

So I love you (or I try to, at least) but I think your theology is death because it refuses to feel mercy with the oppressed, and that is not love.

Is God deaf?

I find myself asking this question in days like this. Honestly, I ask it every time I watch the news.

In Luke 18 Jesus tells a parable about a widow who seeks justice from an unjust judge (try saying that 10 times real fast). This unjust judge refuses to give her justice, until he grows tired from her nagging and hears her plea. Then Jesus asks the question I am asking, and we are all asking: “will not God (who is just and unlike this evil judge) give justice to his elect who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them?”

Then Jesus affirms: “I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily.” Jesus adds, I expect sadly, “when the Son of Man (aka Jesus) comes, will he find faith on earth?”

Luke tells us that Jesus told this parable to encourage his followers to pray and not lose hope.

Is God deaf? Where is his speedy justice?

Is it that the church is not crying out for justice? Have we no faith?

Worse yet, are we crying out for war and hatred?

Palestine is on my mind and heart. It is also in my prayers.

The oppressed are on my mind and heart. They are also in my prayers.

The oppressors are on my mind and heart. They are also in my prayers.

There is a just God. I will wait on him

على قلبي

الأوضاع في فلسطين تأزمت في الأسابيع الماضية

هي أصلا متأزمة. الفلسطينيون يعيشون تحت الإحتلال منذ العام 1948 ولاتزال اسرائيل تبني المستوطنات غير الشرعية. حتى الفلسطينيون الساكنون في اسرائيل لا ينالون حقوقهم

ولكن الأمور تأزمت أكثر

وأجد أنني لا امتلك القوة على وضع المقالات التي تفضح الظلم

أجد أنني لا أمتلك القوة على السير في مناقشات لاهوتية وكتابية طويلة حول قضية “شعب الله”. يوما ما سأفعل ذلك. ربما قريبا. لكن ليس اليوم

اليوم أنا تعبان وحزين وغير قادر على الخوض في نقاشات مع ناس يرفضون الإعتراف حتى أنه توجد مشكلة

هذه هي أفكاري البسيطة حول الأوضاع في فلسطين

الظلم يوجع حتى ولو لك تكن تتلقاه أنت

أجد أن تلقي الرسائل الإخبارية الفورية على هاتفي وهي تقول لي يوميا عن قتل أطفال فلسطينيين أمرا موجعا، حتى ولو لم يحدث شيء لي ولعائلتي

قبل أسبوعين كنت مع رجل عجوز سوري في الأمن العام اللبناني لأساعده على الحصول على إقامة في لبنان ورأيت قوى الأمن تعامل السوريين مثل الحيوانات. وقف ضابط صغير، يكاد يكون حفيد صاحبي، وصار يصرخ به أمام الجميع بشكل مهين ومشين. وجدت نفسي أنا أتوجع مع أن الضابط لم يصرخ علي أنا. لم اتضايق فقط بل توجعت وكأنني أنا من أهنت

الظلم يوجع جدا. هل هذا ما يشعره الله، مضروبا بمليون مرة، وهو ينظر للبشرية يوميا؟

العنف لن يحل المشكلة

اسرائيل تستخدم العنف لتحمي نفسها. تبني الجدران العالية، وتقصف آلاف القتلى في حروب عبثية، وتضع الأطفال في السجون من أجل جرم رمي الحجارة، وتفتح النار على أي مشتبه به، ومنذ بضعة اسابيع بدات تشجع مواطنيها على حمل السلاح

بعض الفلسطينيون الذين امتلؤو باليأس بعد أن خسروا كل شيء أيضا ردوا بعنف مستخدمين الموارد الفقيرة الموجودة بين أيدهم مثل الحجارة والسكاكين وأجسادهم

ولكن العنف لن يحل المشكلة. وأتذكر كلام يسوع بأن القتل بالسيف يجلب الموت بالسيف

ما دامت اسرئيل ترفض معاملة الفلسطينيين كبشر فستبقى عالقة في دوامة العنف. الكره يجلب الكره. الحرب تجلب الحرب. والشعب الإسرائيلي سيجد نفسه محاطا بشعوب مظلومة وغاضبة، والفلسطينيون سيجدون أنفسهم مخنوقين بالكره والظلم. الموت يأتي من العنف وليس الحياة

اللاهوت السيئ قاتل

لن أناقش اللاهوت في هذه المدونة

ولكن اسمعوني

نعم، أنا أتكلم معكم يا أيها المسيحيين الصهاينة

اسمعوني

إذا كنتم بحاجة لتفاسير كتابية ونقاشات لاهوتية لكي تقتنعوا أن قتل الناس وأخذ أرضهم أمرا خاطئ فأنا في هذه الحالة لن أدخل معكم في هذا الحديث، وأتردد قبل أن أدعوكم عائلتي

كيف أعرف أن لاهوتكم، أي نظرتكم لله، خاطئة؟ بكل بساطة لأنكم تحتفلون بالقتل والكره. أنا لا أعرف إلهكم. أنا لا أعبد إلهكم. أنا أعبد الإله الذي لخص كل الناموس بوصية المحبة

إذا أنا أحبكم (أو أجرب على الأقل) ولكني أعتقد أن لاهوتكم هو الموت لأنكم ترفضون أن تشعروا بالرحمة مع المظلوم وهذه ليست محبة

هل الله أطرش؟

أجد نفسي أسأل هذا السؤال في هذه الأيام. لكي أكون صادقا، أسأله في كل مرة اشاهد الأخبار

في لوقا 18 يروي يسوع مثل عن أرملة تطلب العدل من قاضي ظالم. وهذا القاضي الظالم يرفض أن يعطيها العدل إلى أن يمل من إلحاحها ويسمع صوتها. ومن ثم يسأل يسوع السؤال الذي أسأله أنا ونسأله كلنا: “ألن ينصف الله (الذي هو عادل وليس ظالم مثل القاضي في القصة) مختاريه الذين يصرخون إليه ليلا نهارا؟ هل سيتأخر؟

ومن ثم يؤكد يسوع قائلا “أقول لكم سيسرع بالعدل لهم.” ومن ثم يزيد يسوع بحزن “ولكن عندما يأتي إبن الإنسان  – أي يسوع – هل سيجد إيمان على الأرض؟

لوقا يقول لنا أن يسوع روى هذا المثل ليشجعهم على الصلاة وعدم فقدان الأمل

هل الله أطرش؟ أين إنصافه السريع؟

هل الكنيسة تصرخ من أجل العدل؟ هل لدينا إيمان؟

أو، هل نصرخ لأجل الحرب والكره؟

فلسطين في أفكاري وعلى قلبي. وهي أيضا في صلواتي

المظلومون في أفكاري وعلى قلبي. وهم أيضا في صلواتي

الظالمون في أفكاري وعلى قلبي. وهم أيضا في صلواتي

هناك إله عادل. سأنتظره

Pulling out Weeds in Manchester – تنظيف العشب الضار في مانشستر

I am still in Manchester working on the first stages of my PhD.

Yesterday, my friend, Gift, and I decided to help out a bit at the college. So, there I was, wearing old clothes, holding a hoe, and working the ground. I found myself pulling out weeds, checking to see if the roses are fresh, and using gigantic clippers to cut off tree branches that were leaning onto the path.

Just to put things into context, the most “gardening” I had ever done in my lifetime in Beirut was pulling out the thorns from my socks after a picnic in the mountains. We are originally Palestinian (yes, big surprise, Palestinians used to live in Palestine before 1948 and the Zionist invasion) so, though we have a Lebanese passport, we do not really own your usual “house in the village” as other Lebanese do.

The experience yesterday was special and beautiful. Working the land might give you a sore back, but it will give you peace of mind. Yesterday’s work reminded me of something which many people probably already know: the land is beautiful and wise.

I was reminded of God’s creation of humanity in his image, to take care of creation.

I was reminded of how insignificant our lives are as I sat under a towering tree that must have stood here for hundreds of years.

I was reminded of the chaos in life and of the need for constant toil, as I pulled out weeds that I knew would come up again in a few days.

I was reminded of the work of God’s spirit in us, as I had to cut off hundreds of branches that had strayed too far from the forest.

I was reminded of the life that exists all around us in the tiny petal that is flowering into a rose, in the spider crawling across the dirt on a long journey home, in the green leaf breathing in the freshness of morning dew.

I was reminded of our ignorance in Lebanon as we build more structures, cut more trees, and still struggle not to throw our trash from our car windows.

I was reminded of our arrogance as humans as we take everything from the earth but give nothing in return.

I was reminded of the life-giving breath of God, which breathes beauty and light in every tall stalk of grass and bowing bush of flowers.

I was reminded of the hole in our gospel that preaches heaven while turning earth into a hell.

Let us stand in prayer:

Lord,

Thank you for creation.

Give us to live

In simplicity,

That we may see,

The richness of your work

Amen

مدونة #23: تنظيف العشب الضار في مانشتر

ما زلت في مانشستر وأعمل على المراحل الأولى من الدكتوراه

البارحة قررت وصديقي غيفت أن نساعد في الكليّة. فوجدت نفسي لابسا ثيابا قديمة وحاملا مجرفة وأعمل في الأرض على تنظيف الحشائش الضارة، أعاين الورود لأزيل القديمة منها كما وأحمل مقصا ضخما لأقطع الأغصان التي تدلّت فوق الطريق

ولكي أضع الأمور في منظارها الصحيح، خبرتي في العمل في الحديقة تتضمن إزالت الشوك من كلساتي بعد نزهة في جبل. نحن أصلا من فلسطين ( نعم إنه أمر مفاجئ أن الفلسطينيين سكنوا في فلسطين قبل الإجتياح الصهيوني سنة 1948)، إذا، مع أننا نملك هويّة لبنانية لا نملك “ضيعة” في الجبل مثل باقي اللبنانيين

تذكرت عمل روح الله فينا وأنا أقص مئات الأغصان التي ضلت الطريق وابتعدت عن الغابة

تذكّرت أن الحياة موجودة من حولنا في الزهرة الصغيرة اتي تتفتح وفي العنكبوت الذي يمشي الدرب الطويل لبيته عبر التراب وفي الورقة الخضراء التي تتنشق ندى الصباح الباكر

تذكّرت جهلنا في لبنان إذ نبني المباني العالية ونقطع الأشجار ولا زلنا نتصارع لكي نتوقّف عن رمي الزبالة من شباك السيارة

تذكّرت كبرياءنا كبشر إذ نأخذ كل شيء من الأرض ولا نعطيها أي شيء بالمقابل

تذكّرت نفس الله الذي يعطي حياة ويتنفّس الجمال والنور في كل عشبة طويلة وشجرة ورود منحنية

تذكّرت الفجوة في إنجيلنا الذي يعلّم السماء ويحوّل الأرض إلى جهنّم

Why I was not angry with the Supreme Court decision over Gay marriage – لما لم أغضب من قرار المحكمة العليا حول زواج المثليين

Let me start by saying that I did not intend to write about this topic. The Supreme Court in the US took a decision to make homosexual marriages legal in all states. I am not a US citizen, nor do I live there, so I did not plan to write about this.

However, over the past two days, there has been an outbreak of discussions from Lebanese people over this issue on social media. Some are ecstatic while others are very angry.

Now, for those who do follow this blog (you can do so by entering your email address, go on, don’t be shy), you will already expect that I was not particularly upset by the decision in the US. Actually, I think the decision is fair. In a previous post I argued that we should defend homosexual rights and treat all people with respect.

Here are the reasons I wasn’t angered by the court decision. They are not meant to be as an attack against anyone:
Reason 1: The new law is not about the church

The law is not: “The church has to marry homosexual people.” Nor is it “churches have to put rainbow flags in their pulpits,” or “pastors have to be gay to be ordained.” Simply put, it was a law, from a government, giving homosexual couples the right to get a legal marriage. This law is not aimed at the church, nor is it about the church. Similar laws have been put in place in many places in Europe over the last ten years. Nothing has happened in the church. Christians still have their liberties, enthusiastic Christians are still going about doing and being the church to all people and God is still moving.

This law does not “take” anything from Christians. This law gives something to homosexuals.

Reason 2: I am busy being angry about other more important stuff

Last week was pretty bloody all over the world. Terrorists attacked in Europe, Africa, and as usual in Syria. I did not see any posts from my Christian friends about this terrorism. Israel is still daily oppressing Palestinians. Poor people are living in horrible conditions in Lebanon. Last week videos showing police brutally beating prisoners in Lebanon were posted all over the media. Sex trade is prevalent all over the world as humans are still sold as slaves, and much more. Yet all we find the time to comment on on social media are weddings we attend and new laws about homosexuals in a country thousands of miles away from us.

I read the Bible (I try to every day, you should do it too) and I see a God who is constantly angry about oppression and injustice in the world. I read the prophets of old telling the people that until they treat their neighbours with justice God will not listen to their prayers. I hear Jesus telling us to forgive so we can be forgiven. So, for me, laws granting people the right to live as they choose are not high on my priority list as a Jesus-follwer.

Reason 3: The church and the government are two different things

I do not want a “Christian” government that would force all people to live by Christian values. The church is the church. We live as we do, followers of Christ, disregarding what the secular government does. We are called to have political views which seek to enhance justice and peace and to be good citizens, but the state and the church are two different things. We want to build the Kingdom of God not any earthly empire.

If two people want to get married in a government office then that’s their choice. If two people want to get married under the sight of God and the church and on the hands of a pastor then that’s also their choice. The two are not mutually exclusive (meaning one cancels the other).

Reason 4: We define marriage by the way we act

We define things and terms by the way we live them out. We may live in a world where most Christians do not follow Christ. However, we show true Christianity by being followers of Jesus and not by attacking others. We define Christianity by how we live out our faith.

I hear that people are worried about marriage being re-defined. Are we really? Then we should work to live out the true definition of marriage as we understand it through our faith. All the terms are “up for grabs” if you like. People speak of faith, marriage, and God and mean different things. We can’t have a monopoly over terms but we can have a monopoly over our own actions. We make marriage holy by living a holy marriage. Marriage in itself is not holy. Only God is holy and the presence of God in a marriage makes it holy

Those are a few of the reasons I was not angry about this new law in America. I actually think it is fair.

These are troubling times. The church is faced with new and old questions. My prayer is that we have the grace to dialogue through those issues in a respectful way.

مدونة #21 : لما لم أغضب من قرار المحكمة العليا حول زواج المثليين

دعوني أبدأ بالقول أنني لم أنوي أن أكتب حول هذا الموضوع. اتخذت المحكمة العليا في الولايات المتحدة الإمبريالية (أو الأمريكية) قرارا يسمح للمثليين بالزواج في كل الولايات. أنا لست مواطنا أمريكيا ولا أعيش في أمريكا لذا لم أخطط للكتابة عن الموضوع

لكن في الأيام الماضية انهمرت التعلقات في وسائل التواصل الإجتماعي حول الموضوع من اللبنانيين. البعض ابتهج فرحا بينما البعض الآخر صرخ غضبا

إذا كنت تتابع مدوناتي (بامكانك أن تفعل الأمر من خلال كتابة عنوان بريدك الإلكتروني، هيا، لا تكن خجولا) ستقدر أن تتوقع أنني لم أشعر بالإنزعاج من هذا القرار. على العكس، اعتقد أنه قرار عادل. في مدونة سابقة، ناقشت الموضوع ودافعت عن الرأي القائل بأنه على المسيحيين أن يدافعوا عن حقوق المثليين ويعاملوا كل الناس باحترام

هذه هي الأسباب لما لم أشعر بالغضب من قرار المحكمة. هذه الأسباب لا تهدف للهجوم على أحد

السبب الأول: القانون الجديد لا يتعلق بالكنيسة

القانون لا يقول بأنه على الكنيسة أن تزوج المثليين أو أنه على الكنيسة أن ترفع أعلام قوس القزح في المنابر أو أنه على الرعاة والقسس والخوارنة أن يكونوا مثليين. بكل بساطة هذا القانون الذي صدر من دولة يعطي المثليين الحق بالزواج المدني. هذا القانون غير موجّه للكنيسة ولا يتعلّق بالكنيسة. لقد تم وضع قوانين مشابهة في أوروبا في السنوات العشر الأخيرة ولم يحدث شيء للكنيسة. ما زال المسيحيون يتمتعون بحرياتهم والمسيحيون المندفعون يقومون بعمل الكنيسة ويعيشون الكنيسة والله يتحرك

هذا القانون لا “يأخذ” شيئ من المسيحيين بل يعطي شيئ للمثليين

السبب الثاني: أنا منشغل بالغضب من أمور أهم

الأسبوع الماضي كان دمويا حول العالم. هجم الإرهابيون في أوروبا وأفريقيا وكالعادة في سوريا. لم أرى أي تعليقات من أصدقائي المسيحيين حول هذا الإرهاب. إسرائيل يوميا تظلم الشعب الفلسطيني. الفقراء في لبنان يعيشون في أوضاع مزرية. تم نشر فيديو يصور وحشية رجال الأمن اللبنانيين في التعاطي مع السجناء الأسبوع الماضي على كل وسائل الإعلام. الإتجار الجنسي متفشي في كل العالم والبشر يُباعون كالعبيد وأكثر من ذلك. ولكننا لا نجد الوقت إلا للتعليق على وسائل التواصل الإجتماعي عن الأعراس التي رقصنا بها وقوانين جديدة حول المثلية الجنسية في بلد يبعد عنا آلاف الأميال

أنا اقرا الكتاب المقدس  (أجرب أن أقرأ يوميا، حاول أنت أيضا) وأرى الله غاضبا باستمرار من الظلم في العالم. أقرأ الأنبياء في القديم يقولون للشعب أنه يجب عليهم أن يعاملوا القريب بعدل لكي يسمع الله صلواتهم. أسمع يسوع يقول لنا أن نغفر للآخرين ليغفر لنا. بالنسبة لي قانون يعطي الناس الحق بأن يعيشوا كما يشاؤون ليس من أولوياتي

السبب الثالث: الكنيسة والحكومة أمران مختلفان

لا أريد حكومة مسيحية تفرض على الناس أن يعيشوا المبادئ المسيحية. الكنيسة هي الكنيسة. ونحن نعيش كأتباع للمسيح بغض النظر عن ما تفعله الحكومة. نحن مدعوون ليكون لنا آراء سياسية تدفع نحو العدل والسلام وأن نكون مواطنين صالحين. ولكن الوطن والكنيسة أمران مختلفان. نحن نريد أن نبني ملكوت الله وليس أي ملكوت أرضي

إذا أراد شخصان أن يتجوزا في المبنى الحكومي فهذا خيارهما ولهما ذلك. وإذا أراد شخصان أن يتجوزا تحت عين الله والكنيسة وتحت يد قسيسة فأيضا هذا خيارهما ولهما ذلك. الأمران لا يلغيان بعضهما البعض

السبب الرابع: نحن نعرّف الزواج بطريقة تصرفنا

نحن نعرّف الأمور والمفردات بالطريقة التي نعيشها. قد نعيش في عالم حيث معظم المسيحيون لا يتبعون المسيح. ولكن نحن نظهر المسيحية الحقيقية من خلال اتباع المسيح وليس التهجّم على الآخرين. نحن نعرّف المسيحية من خلال عيشنا لإيماننا

أسمع الناس يتوترون ويصرخون أن الزواج يتم إعادة تعريفه. حقا؟ إذا كنت قلقا على الزواج فالأحرى بك أن تعيش الزواج الحقيقي من خلال فهمك للإيمان. كل المصطلحات متاحة للجميع. الناس يتكلمون عن الزواج والإيمان والله. ولكن كل شخص لديه مفهوم مختلف. ليس بإمكاننا أن نحتكر المصطلحات بل بإمكاننا أن نحتكر تصرفاتنا الشخصية. نحن نجعل الزواج مقدس من خلال أن نحيا زواج مقدس. الزواج بحد ذاته ليس مقدسا. فقط الله هو المقدس ووجود الله في الزواج يجعله مقدسا

هذه بعض الأسباب التي دفعتني لأتقبل خبر القانون الجديد بدون غضب لا بل بالشعور بالرضا

هذه أوقات صعبة. الكنيسة تواجه أسئلة قديمة وجديدة. صلاتي أن يكون لدينا النعمة لنتحاور حول هذه الأمور بطريقة محترمة

Break the Silence, 3 reasons to speak up against injustice – اكسر الصمت، ثلاثة أسباب لرفع الصوت ضد الظلم

This Friday, 24 April, millions of Armenians (and non-Armenians) around the world will walk in demonstrations and hold different activities to remember the genocide of their people on the hands of the Ottoman Turks 100 years ago. Many people will ask: why do you do this? Will anything come of it? Will the dead rise again?
This is a vital question. Should we remember the acts of injustice of the present and the past? Are we wasting our time when we keep shouting out and speaking up about injustice?
Now obviously, as my 60+ loyal readers know, I try to always speak up against injustice. My last post, you can read it here, remembered the victims in the recent terrorist acts in Kenya.

So, here are my 3 reasons we should speak up against injustice (please feel free to add more reasons or come up with counter-reasons in the comments):

 

Reason 1 – The injustice is too BIG

Can we really not talk about 1.5 million murdered Armenians? Can we not talk about the whole Palestinian people losing their homeland? Can we not speak about the children in Lebanon begging on the streets? Can we close our eyes over the modern slavery of sex trade? Can we be silent when we see theft, murder, oppression, sickness, sadness, or sin in the world?
The answer, if you are still wondering, is no! The injustice in the world is too big, too wide, and too far-reaching for us as thinking and feeling human beings to simply ignore. You may be able to, but I can’t.

Injustice should, at the very least, move us to words. My hope is that it will move us to action.

Reason 2 – We follow God’s Kingdom

As I read my Bible and think on the words of those who wrote about God before us, I can’t help but notice one recurring theme: Our God hates injustice. He does. Live with it. The Law of Moses is filled with commandments to take care of the widows and orphans. The prophets of Israel (of old mind you) shouted out against the people for praying to God with their mouths and then oppressing their neighbours with their hands.

Jesus (can we at least take Jesus’ words into consideration?) spent his life on earth healing the sick, feeding the hungry, and giving hope to the hopeless. He spent his life fighting the injustice of his society and proclaimed that God’s children are those who give a cup of cold water to those in need (am sure if Jesus was living in the North Pole he would have spoken of a cup of steaming hot tea).

It is simple. God’s Kingdom, his will for this earth, his purposes for all his children and creation, is that they live in peace and justice together. That is the image of God: “it was good.” When we speak out against injustice, we are saying to all, God is our king; we reject injustice and seek peace and restoration.

Reason 3 – Injustice must not be repeated

In Lebanon we have a phrase “may it be remembered but not repeated” which we use to speak of our 15-year civil war. This week in chapel at the school I work in I showed a short video about the Armenian Genocide to my Middle School students. Perhaps if we remembered the injustice of old we can make sure that we and our children (I do not have any yet) will not repeat the atrocities we see around us. Let us awaken the world to what has happened and is happening, in hope that tomorrow will be better. If we do not have hope in change we have nothing.

As we speak up about our dark past and present we are actually speaking into our yet-unknown future. Your words shed light on the past and light the road to tomorrow. Speak up!

نهار الجمعة في 24 نيسان سيمشي الملايين من الأرمن وغير الأرمن في مسيرات ونشاطات عديدة في ذكرى المجزرة بحق الشعب الأرمني على يد الأتراك العثمانيين قبل 100 عام. وسيسأل الكثيرون: لما يعملون ذلك؟ هل سينالون أي نتيجة؟ هل سيقوم الأموات من قبورهم

السبب الأول – الظلم كبير جدا

هل بإمكاننا ألا نتكلم عن المليون ونصف المليون أرمني المقتول؟ هل بإمكاننا ألا نتكلم عن الشعب الفلسطيني بأكمله الذي خسر أرضه؟ هل بإمكاننا ألا نتكلم عن الأطفال الذين يشحدون على طرقات لبنان؟ هل بإمكاننا أن نغمض عيوننا عن حقيقة العبودية المعاصرة في الإتجار بالجنس؟ هل بإمكاننا أن نسكت عندما نرى السرقة والقتل والظلم والمرض والحزن والخطية في العالم؟  الجواب، إن كنت ما زلت حائرا، هو لا! الظلم في العالم كبير جدا وواسع جدا ومنتشر جدا بحيث لا يسمح لنا كبشر نمتلك العقل والأحاسيس أن نتجاهله. قد تستطيع أنت، أما أنا فلا

الظلم يجب على الأقل أن يحرك لساننا. وأملي أن يحرك أيادينا ايضا

السبب الثاني – نحن نتبع ملكوت الله

وأنا أقرأ كتابي المقدس وأفكر بما كتبه الذين جاؤو قبلنا عن الله، لا يسعني إلا ان ألاحظ موضوع متكرر في كل مكان: إلهنا يكره الظلم. هذه حقيقة. تقبّلها. ناموس موسى مليئ بالوصايا للإهتمام بالأرملة واليتيم. انبياء اسرائيل (اسرائيل قديما) صرخوا ضد الشعب لأنهم كانوا يصلون لله بأفواههم بينما أياديهم تظلم الآخرين

يسوع (دعونا على الأقل نأخذ كلمات المسيح على محمل الجد) أمضى حياته على الأرض يشفي المرضى ويطعم الجياع ويعطي أملا لفاقدي الأمل. أمضى حياته يحارب الظلم في المجتمع ويعلن أن أولاد الله هم أولئك الذين يعطون كأس ماء بارد لمن هو بحاجة إليه – ولو كان يسوع ساكن في القطب الشمالي لتكلم عن إعطاء كأس شاي ساخن

الأمر بسيط. ملكوت الله، مشيئته لهذا العالم، قصده لكل أولاده كما والخليقة هو أن يعيشوا معا بسلام وعدل. هذه هي صورة الله: “إنه حسن.” عندما نرفع الصوت ضد الظلم نحن نقول للجميع أن الله ملكنا ونحن نرفض الظلم ونبتغي الفداء والسلام

السبب الثالث – لا يجب تكرار الظلم

لدينا قول في لبنان “تنذكر وما تنعاد” نستخدمه للتكلم عن الحرب الأهلية اللبنانية التي دامت 15 سنة. في هذا الأسبوع في الكنيسة في المدرسة التي أعمل بها وضعت فيلما قصيرا عن المجزرة الأرمنية لتلامذة الصفوف المتوسطة. لربما إن تذكرنا الظلم القديم سنتأكد من ألا نكرره ويكرره أولادنا. دعونا نوقظ العالم حولنا للأمور التي حصلت والأمور التي تحصل، على أمل أن يكون الغد أفضل. إذا لم يكن لدينا أمل بالغد فنحن لا نملك اي شيء

بينما نرفع الصوت عن ماضينا الحالك وحاضرنا الصعب نكون نتكلم إلى داخل مستقبلنا المجهول. كلماتك تضيء الماضي والطريق للمستقبل. ارفع صوتك

دعونا نقف لنصلي

يا رب

ساعدنا لنكسر الصمت

مثلك

ونصرخ إلى الظلام

ليكن نور

آمين
