It is quite the time to be alive. We are living in a global pandemic. This is not an apocalyptic movie, video game, or board game. This is real life. We sit huddled in the safety of our homes, and thousands of medical workers and other vital parts of society brave the outdoors.

But in the online world no one is staying inside. On the contrary, old wars have been renewed, and new wars are being waged. The most prominent being between atheists and believers.

The main argument used by atheists can be paraphrased by the following statement: God is imaginary. When real danger struck, all religious places of worship were closed. Religious leaders are unable to find a solution. All eyes turn now to science. Religion is useless.

I will attempt to reply to this accusation. I will state from the onset that I do not care for defending religion in general. In fact, I do not care for defending Christianity, or at least all that Christianity has become. I will be defending my personal faith in Jesus Christ.

First of all, yes, atheists are right. A magical god who protects believers from all dangers and intervenes to solve all their problems does not exist (see my take on praying for protection in my previous blog). I don’t care what bible passages you can quote (que psalm 91), the current crisis, for all intents and purposes, has proven beyond a shadow of doubt that such a god does not exist.

Second, the New Testament never claims that it’s the church’s job to heal diseases. Yes, God has intervened in scriptures, history, and with people I know personally to heal in a supernatural way. But that has never been the purpose of faith in Jesus. You see, the bible places the problems of this world firmly on sin and not sickness. This world is broken. Humanity is broken. If anything, the current coronavirus crisis has proven that. Prices have gone up and people are panic-buying all the resources. The issue of sin, be it selfishness, hate, or general evil, will not be resolved by science. A thousand years more of scientific research will not make us better people. Science can and does provide solutions to most of the problems of this world. Science allows me to write this blog and post it online. Science will hopefully soon provide a vaccine for Covid-19. But it can’t devise a solution for the problem of sin. This is the gospel. This is the message of Jesus. Perhaps it is too simple that it will be laughable for some. But it is what it is. Jesus, by his life, death, and resurrection, was victorious over sin and death. We can join in his victory if we choose to follow him.

Third, the Christian faith hinges on one fact. Not on miracles. Not on supernatural happenings. The Christian faith hinges on the death and resurrection of Christ. Prove those wrong and yes, you have proven that my faith in Jesus is wishful thinking.

Fourth, and finally, there are brilliant scientists who follow Jesus. There are brilliant scientists who are atheists. A Christian worldview sees the hand of God behind and through all that is good in this world, including scientific advancements and discoveries. Faith in Jesus does not oppose science. Yes, the church has stood in the face of science multiple times across history. Those events are deplorable. But the church has also stood with science and enhanced scientific discovery in other places and times across history.

I join my voice to that of my atheist friends in asking my fellow followers of Jesus, and all believers in general, to take a moment to reconsider our theology in light of what is happening.

I am aware that this blog does not answer all the thoughts and questions of my atheist friends. I am aware that the problem of evil (how does a good God allow evil in the world?) is wider than the above discussion. I hope that, at the very least, this blog pushes my atheist friends to reconsider their attacks on religion. I also hope that this blog pushes my fellow believers to reconsider their views about God.

Allow me to end with a salute to all the scientists, nurses, doctors, cleaners, workers in the food industry, and security forces working tirelessly day and night in the face of danger to help bring an end to this nightmare.

هل أثبت فايروس كورونا عدم وجود الله؟

إنه لوقت مميّز في تاريخ البشرية! ها نحن نعيش  وسط وباء عالمي! لسنا نشاهد فيلمًا أو نلعب لعبة إلكترونيّة، أو ثقافيّة عن نهاية العالم، بل هذه حقيقة واقعة. نحن نجلس مختبئين في بيوتنا بينما يواجه آلاف العاملين في قطاعات الصحّة والطعام وغيرها العالم الخارجي الخطير

ولكن عبر الإنترنت الصورة تختلف تمامًا، لا أحد “يقبع في منزله” بل تم إحياء حروب قديمة، واندلعت أخرى جديدة. وأهم تلك الصراعات هو الصراع بين الملحدين والمؤمنين

الحجة الأساسيّة التي يلجأ إليها الملحدون هي التالية: الله خرافة. عندما دق ناقوس الخطر الحقيقيّ أُغلقت دور العبادة أبوابها وعجز رجال الدين عن إيجاد الحلول. والآن كل العيون شخصت نحو العلم، والدين أصبح بلا منفعة

سأحاول الردّ على هذا الإتّهام ولكن دعوني أوضّح أنه بدايةً  لا يهمّني الدفاع عن الأديان بشكل عام، ولا حتى يهمّني الدفاع عن المسيحيّة، أو أقلّه ما آلت إليه المسيحيّة في يومنا هذا، في المقابل، سأدافع عن إيماني الشخصي بيسوع المسيح

أولًا، الملحدون على حق. لا يوجد إله خرافي يحمي المؤمنين من كل المصائب ويتدخل دائًما لحل مشاكلهم (أنظر رأيي بالصلاة من أجل حماية إلهيّة في المدوّنة الماضية). لا يهمني إن استطعت أن تقتبس آيات كتابيّة حول هذا الموضوع (مثال مزمور 91)، فواقع الأمر أنّ هذه الأزمة أثبتت بما لا يقبل الشك بأن إله مماثل غير موجود

ثانياً، لا يدّعي العهد الجديد بأنّ دور الكنيسة هو الشفاء من الأمراض. نعم، تدخّل الله في الكتاب المقدس وعبرالتاريخ وحتّى مع أناس أعرفهم شخصياً بالشفاء بطرقٍ تفوق الطبيعة، غير أنّ هذا الأمر لم يكن يومًا هدف الإيمان بيسوع. الكتاب المقدس يحدّد مشكلة البشرية، ألا وهي الخطية وليس المرض. عالمنا فاسد والبشرية فاسدة، وأزمة فايروس كورونا هذه تذكّرنا بتلك الحقيقة المرّة، فالأسعار في غلاء مستمر والناس تشتري الأغراض بهلع وبدون التفكير بغيرها. ليس بمقدور العلم أن يجد الحلّ لمشكلة الخطيّة، أو سمّها الأنانية أو الكراهية أو الشرّ بشكل عام، ولو استمرّت الأبحاث العلميّة لألف سنة، فلن نصبح أناسًا أفضل. يقدّم العلم الحلول لمعظم مشاكل الأرض؛ فالعلم يتيح لي كتابة هذه المدوّنة ويتيح لي الوسيلة لتحميلها عبر الشبكة الإلكترونيّة، وأرجو أن يكتشف العلم الحل عمّا قريب لفايروس كورونا، ولكنّ العلم عاجز أمام مشكلة الخطيّة. وهذا هو الإنجيل؛ هذه هي رسالة يسوع! قد تبدو بسيطة لدرجة السخافة، ولكن هذه هي ببساطة ولا أمتلك غيرها: فيسوع من خلال حياته وموته وقيامته انتصر على الخطيئة والموت، وننضم نحن لهذا الإنتصار إن اخترنا اتباع المسيح

ثالثاً، الإيمان المسيح لا يرتبط بالعجائب أو الأمور الفائقة للطبيعة، غير أنّه يرتبط بحقيقة واحدة، وهي موت يسوع وقيامته. إن استطعت أن تبرهن أنّ المسيح لم يمت ولم يقم من الأموات فعندئذٍ تكون قد برهنت أن إيماني بيسوع مجرد خرافات وأوهام

رابعاً وأخيراً، في عالمنا علماء بارعون وهم من أتباع المسيح، وعلماء آخرون بارعون وهم ملحدون. المنظار المسيحي للعالم يرى يد الله في كل أمر صالح في الكون، بما في ذلك الإنجازات والإكتشافات العلميّة. فالإيمان بيسوع لا يتعارض مع العلم. نعم، للأسف وقفت الكنيسة عبر التاريخ عدة مرات في وجه العلم، وهذه أحداث مشينة في تاريخنا، ولكنّها وقفت أيضا في عدّة مراحل وأماكن في التاريخ مع التقدّم العلمي وساهمت به

أضمّ صوتي لأصوات أصدقائي الملحدين في الطّلب من أتباع يسوع والمؤمنين بشكل عام بأن يستغلّوا الفرصة للتفكير في لاهوتنا على ضوء ما يحدث اليوم

هذه المدونة لا تجيب كل أفكار أصدقائي الملحدين وأسئلتهم، وهي لا تناقش الموضوع الأوسع وهو مشكلة الشر (كيف يسمح إله صالح بحدوث الشر؟)، ولكن رجائي أن تدفع أصدقائي الملحدين على الأقل لإعادة التفكير بهجومهم على الدين. وأصلّي أن تدفع زملائي المؤمنين بإعادة التفكير بنظرتهم لله

Should Christians Boycott Netflix?هل يجب أن يقاطع المسيحيّون نيتفلكس

On December 3, Netflix released a Brazilian short movie (46 mins) called The First Temptation of Christ. It tells the story of a gay Jesus. The movie is satirical. Christians all over the world have issued calls to boycott Netflix, reacting in anger to this mockery of their faith.

I beg to disagree. I don’t think we, Jesus followers, need to react in anger to the release of this movie. Here are my reasons. Please hear me out.

(1) It is an issue of free speech. Simply, people who do not consider Jesus to be their Lord or savior have the right to mock him. I have the right to worship him. Let’s look at this from the other side. Do we think it is fair when Christians are banned from sharing Christ, their churches closed, and they are persecuted in Muslim countries? Of course not. But, for the Muslims, saying that Jesus is lord is blasphemy. However, it is our belief.

Which society is better for Christianity and Christians? One with freedom or oppression? If we say freedom, then it should be freedom for everyone. Just as I have the freedom to build a church, share Christ, and live out my faith, so other have the same freedoms to share their beliefs, even if they contradict mine.

(2) Jesus told us to expect persecution and mockery. The early church (the first 350 years) experienced extreme persecution. Jesus followers all over the globe today experience persecution. Not only did Jesus tell us to expect rejection, he also asked us to rejoice when rejected. For then we would be joining in the footsteps of the men and women of God across history who endured hardships and even died for their faith. We would be walking in the footsteps of Jesus himself (Matthew 5:11-12). If anything then, when hearing that a movie mocking Jesus has come out, we should be joyful. Perhaps our reaction to this movie can be a witness to those mocking our faith.

(3) Finally, this is an opportunity for Christian witness. I remember when the movie Noah came out in 2014. Many Christians protested that the movie presents a story different than the one we find in Genesis. But do you know what happened when the movie came out? The search for the original story of Noah on Google peaked when people watched the film. So what if people watch a short movie making fun of Christ? What if, perhaps, some will think, let’s find out the original story? People can, generally, differentiate between fact and sarcasm.

Even more yet, Netflix has tens of excellent Christian and biblical movies and series. Rather than spending time and energy on getting people to boycott Netflix (although that is a peaceful and commendable way to protest), how about we spend time and energy on producing good Christian movies on Netflix?

I write these words during Christmas. I pause here at the end to remind myself and my readers that our faith is rooted in a God who lets go of his power and comes down as a helpless child. It is good for our faith to be mocked. It is good to remember how to turn the other cheek.

هل يجب أن يقاطع المسيحيّون نيتفلكس؟

أصدرت نيتفلكس في 3 كانون الأول ديسمبر فيلم برازيلي قصير (46 دقيقة) بعنوان  تجربة المسيح الأولى. يصوّر الفيلم يسوع على أنه مثليّ، ويُعتَبَرُ الفيلم من النوع الساخر. دعا عدد من المسيحيّين حول العالم لمقاطعة نيتفلكس كردة فعل غاضبة على هذه السخرية من إيمانهم

أنا لا أوافق على هذا الرأي، ولا أعتقد أنه يجب علينا كأتباع المسيح أن نرد بغضب على إصدار فيلم مماثل، ودعوني في ما يلي أقدم لكم الحجج الداعمة لموقفي هذا

أولًا، إنها مسألة متعلّقة بحريّة التعبير. بكل بساطة، فالأشخاص الذين لا يؤمنون بيسوع كمخلص أو رب لهم الحق بالسخرية منه، كما أنا لي الحق بعبادته. دعونا ننظر للمسألة من منظار معاكس. هل نعتقد أنّ منع المسيحيّين من مشاركة المسيح وإغلاق كنائسهم واضطهادهم في البلدان الإسلاميّة أمر عادل؟ بالتأكيد كلا. ولكن، عندما نقول أن المسيح هو رب نكون بنظر المسلمين كافرين، غير أنّه هذا هو إيماننا

أي مجتمع أفضل للمسيحيّين وللمسيحيّة؟ مجتمع  يتمتّع بالحرية أومجتمع يعاني القمع؟ إذا اخترنا الحرية فيجب أن تكون هذه الحرية حقٌ للجميع؛ وكما أمتلك الحرية لبناء كنيسة ومشاركة المسيح وعيش إيماني، يمتلك الآخرون الحريّة لمشاركة معتقداتهم ولو كانت لا تتوافق مع معتقداتي

ثانيًا، قال لنا يسوع أن نتوقّع الإضطهاد والسخريّة. فالكنيسة الأولى قد اختبرت الاضطهاد العنيف لحوالي 350 سنة، ويختبر أتباع المسيح في يومنا هذا الإضطهاد في كافّة أصقاع الأرض.  يخبرنا يسوع أننا سنختبر الرفض وليس هذا فحسب،  بل يدعونا أيضًا لنفرح عندما يتم رفضنا، لأنّنا عندئذٍ نكون قد انضممنا لرحلة آلاف رجال ونساء الله عبر التاريخ الذين عانوا المصاعب لا بل  ماتوا من أجل إيمانهم. لدى تعرّضنا للسخريّة نكون قد مشينا في خطى المسيح نفسه (متّى 5: 11-12). وعوض الغضب يجب أن نفرح عندما يسخرون منّا ومن مسيحن، فربما قد تكون ردّة فعلنا على الفيلم شهادة طيّبة لمن يسخر من إيماننا

ثالثًا، هذه فرصة للشهادة المسيحيّة. أذكر تمامًا عندما عُرِض  فيلم نوح في دور السينما سنة 2014. احتجّ الكثير من المسيحيّين لأنّ الفيلم يروي قصّة مختلفة عن تلك التي نجدها في سفر التكوين في الكتاب المقدس. ولكن هل تعلمون ماذا حدث عندما صدر الفيلم؟  عندما حضر المشاهدون الفيلم بلغ عدد الباحثين عن قصّة نوح الكتابية على غوغل ذروته. ما الضرر لو شاهد الناس فيلمًا يسخر من المسيح؟ ماذا لو قال بعضهم: دعونا نبحث عن القصّة الأصليّة؟ بإمكان الناس، بشكل عام، التمييز بين السخرية والحقيقة

لا ننسَ أيضًا أن نيتفلكس يقدّم عشرات الأفلام والمسلسلات المسيحيّة والكتابيّة العظيمة. فعوض أن نصرف طاقتنا ووقتنا في مقاطعة نيتفلكس (مع أن عمل المقاطعة طريقة احتجاج سلميّة وراقية)، لمَ لا نصرف طاقتنا ووقتنا في إنتاج أفلام مسيحيّة جيّدة على نيتفلكس؟

أكتب هذه الكلمات في زمن الميلاد. دعونا نتوقّف ونتذكّر أن إيماننا مبنيّ على إلهٍ تخلّى عن قوّته ونزل إلينا كطفل لا حول له ولا قوّة. لابأس إذا سخروا من إيماننا، فمن الجيد أن نتذكّر كيف ندير الخد الآخر

دعونا نقف لنصلي

يا رب

ذكّرنا بأنّنا نتبع

مسيّا عريان

معلّق على صليب العار

Was Jesus the Real God? هل كان يسوع الله الحقيقيّ؟

Last week I received my “Pastor ID.” It is an official card that states that I am a licensed pastor. Armed with my clerical collar and this card, I can skip lines, bypass army checkpoints, and abuse my power as a religious man.

It is weird. I know that inside my wallet there are two ID cards now. There is my regular Lebanese ID. Then there is my secret pastor’s ID with super powers. Is this how Jesus felt while on earth? He was God in flesh. God as human. God among us. As he grew tired, angry, frustrated, or simply hungry, did he wish he could whip out his “God” card and just bypass all this?

In a letter to the church in Philippi, Paul describes what Jesus did in the following words: He emptied himself. Paul then traces Jesus’ downward spiral into becoming human, a slave, and finally death on the cross. He then traces the upward travel from resurrection to reigning supreme over all creation in heaven.

But this word has always made me pause. Jesus emptied himself. Did he stop being God? The answer must be no. It would not be possible to not be God at any point in time. Was he faking it? The answer again has to be no. The New Testament in all its books is clear that Jesus did feel hunger and pain. Jesus was born as an actual baby. Jesus lived 33 years of human experience. Jesus did die a most shameful death on a cross. So no, he wasn’t faking it.

Systematic theologians state that Jesus was entirely God and entirely human at the same time.

Who is this God? He is certainly different that the other gods we read about. He is certainly different than humans. Humans and gods usually strive upwards. If they gain any status, no matter how small, they flaunt it for the whole world to see. Who is this God who chooses to empty himself? Who is this God who chooses to hedge himself into human nature? Who is this creator who chooses to become part of this creation?

But this wasn’t a special case. God is not usually a God who does not empty himself, and then he chose to empty himself only once in Christ. No! The New Testament is clear. Jesus revealed the true nature of God. This is God! He is God on a cross! He is a God who dies for us, and not the other way around!

God is not usually angry, distant, and hateful, but only for a few years he was a king dude walking around and preaching love. God has always been what we see in Jesus. God will always be what we see in Jesus. He is approachable, loving, merciful, kind, holy, sacrificial, dying…etc. He is a God becoming daily like us and near us, dying, to lift us up from our death to his life.

Our very human nature screams for us to fill up and get more. The grace of God, in Jesus, whispers to us to lay low, kneel on the floor, and be emptied. There, in the pit on surrender, in the height of weakness, in death from self, we find Jesus in the cross. Then, with him, we rise from our death of sin into a life of love and constant emptying for others.

But you want us to be like you

Babies in a manger

Crying for someone to feed us

هل كان يسوع الله الحقيقي؟

حصلت الأسبوع الماضي على هويّة القسيس. وهي بطاقة رسمية تقول أنني رجل دين. إن لبست طوق رجال الدين وأظهرت هذه البطاقة أستطيع تخطي الصف، تخطي الحواجز الأمنية، وإساءة استخدام سلطتي كرجل دين

إنه شعور غريب. أعلم أنه في داخل محفظتي يوجد بطاقتَي هويّة. هناك بطاقة الهويّة اللبنانيّة العاديّة. ومن ثم هناك بطاقة الهويّة الدينيّة (السريّة) ذات قوى خارقة للطبيعة. هل هكذا شعر يسوع وهو على الأرض؟ هو كان الله المتجسد. الله الإنسان. الله بيننا. بينما شعر بالتعب والغضب والإحباط وحتى الجوع، هل تمنى إخراج “بطاقة الله” وتخطي كل المشاكل؟

في رسالة إلى الكنيسة في مدينة فيلبي، يصف بولس ما فعله المسيح بالكلمات التالية: أخلى نفسه. ومن ثم يتابع بولس مسار يسوع الهابط إلى كونه صار إنسانا، عبدا، وأخيرا موت الصليب. من بعدها يتابع مساره صعودا من القيامة إلى التسلّط على كل الخليقة في السماء

لطالما استوقفتني هذه الكلمة. يسوع أخلى نفسه. هل توقّف عن كونه الله؟ يجب أن يكون الجواب كلا. ليس ممكنا من الله أن يتوقّف عن أن يكون الله في أي لحظة من الزمن. هل كان يسوع يمثّل أو يخدعنا؟ أيضا الجواب كلا. العهد الجديد بكل كتبه واضح بأن يسوع شعر بالجوع والألم. يسوع وُلد كطفل حقيقي. يسوع عاش 33 سنة من الإختبار الإنساني. يسوع مات ميتة شديدة العار على الصليب. كلا، لم يكن يخدعنا

وكاتبو اللاهوت النظامي يقولون أن المسيح كان الله بالكامل وإنسانا بالكامل في نفس الوقت

من هو هذا الإله؟ هو حقا مختلف عن باقي الآلهة التي نقرأ عنها. هو حقا مختلف عن البشر. البشر والآلهة يسعون للصعود. إذا نالوا أي شأن، ولو صغير، يذيعونه لكل العالم. من هو هذا الإله الذي يختار أن يُخلي نفسه؟ من هو هذا الإله الذي يختار أن يحدّ نفسه بالطبيعة الإنسانيّة؟ من هو هذا الخالق الذي يختار أن يصبح جزء من خليقته؟

ولكن هذه لم تكن حالة خاصة. الله ليس عادة إله لا يُخلي نفسه، ومن ثم اختار أن يُخلي نفسه مرة واحدة في المسيح. كلا! العهد الجديد واضح بأن يسوع أظهر أو كشف طبيعة الله الحقيقية. هذا هو الله! هو الله على الصليب! هو الإله الذي يموت من أجلنا، وليس العكس

الله ليس عادة غاضب وبعيد وكاره، ولكن فقط لبضعة سنوات أصبح هذا الرجل اللطيف الذي يتمشى بيننا ويكرز عن المحبة. لطالما كان الله ما نراه في المسيح. وسيكون الله دائما ما نراه في المسيح. سهل أن تقترب منه. هو محب، حنون، قدوس، مضحّي، يموت…الخ. هو الإله الذي يوميا يصبح مثلنا وقريبا منا، يموت، ليرفعنا من موتنا إلى حياته

طبيعتنا البشرية تصرخ طالبة الملئ والمزيد. ونعمة الله في المسيح تهمس لنا أن نتّضع، ننحني أرضا، ونُخلى. وهناك، في حفرة الإستسلام، في قمة الضعف، في الموت عن النفس، نجد المسيح على الصليب. ثم نقوم معه من موت الخطيّة إلى حياة المحبّة وإخلاء النفس المستمر للآخرين

دعونا نقف لنصلي

يا رب

نريد أن نكون طغاة

نأمر بقتل الآلاف

وأما أنت فتريد أن نكون مثلك

أطفال في مذود

نبكي طالبين الطعام

آمين

Was Jesus Real? هل كان يسوع حقيقيا؟

I have been in a number of university classes, and sat through many conversations, where the following claim has been made:

We do not have evidence that Jesus existed. We only have one sentence by the Jewish 1^st century (in the years 0-100 Common Era – or AD; Jesus died around the year 30 AD) historian, Josephus, and two small mentions in in Roman histories.

I would usually reply: well, we have 27 books in the New Testament. 4 of them are 1^st century biographies of Jesus. The remaining 23 documents are histories, letters, and apocalyptic writings where Jesus and the early Christian movements are the main characters; all written in the 1^st and early 2^nd centuries.

And the reply would come almost every time: But Nabil, the New Testament is a collection of religious books. They can’t be history.

Sigh. A very long sigh.

Allow me to present a rather long quote by a prominent biblical scholar, Loveday Alexander, from her 1995 article:

The Bible is part of “real” literature. There has always been a tendency to treat biblical texts as a special kind of literature. Of course, in one sense that is quite correct: The texts that make up the New Testament form a cohesive group, and they have much more in common with each other than they do as a group with other kinds of literature. But it is easy to forget that none of them was written as a chapter of “The Bible”: The collection came later, not as part of an original concept. (111)

As the writers of the New Testament books were writing, they weren’t writing “sacred texts.” Mark was writing the story of Jesus for his community. Paul was writing a letter for a church he had formed. Luke was writing the history of the early church.

Only later did the church put these books together in one collection. Even later did these books become “sacred,” that is, spiritually authoritative documents that lead the life and testimony of the church.

So yes, on one hand the New Testament is a collection of sacred texts. However, on the other hand, these texts are only sacred for the person who chooses to obey and love by their guidance. They are, at the same time, texts from the 1^st century.

So my dear friends, Jesus was a real figure because we have 27 Jewish (Christianity started as a Jewish sect) documents written 15-80 years after his death that mention him. Add to that the mention by Josephus around the year 93 CE, and two brief mentions in the beginning of the 2^nd century by the Roman politicians Pliny and Tacitus.

I note here, moreover, that there are is a great number of documents that speak about Jesus written in the 1^st, 2^nd, and 3^rd centuries which are not included in the New Testament

Now, you can argue all you want whether or not Jesus was truly the Son of God, rose from the dead, or can forgive your sins. You can spend years studying his teachings, miracles, and life events, and come up with different conclusions. However, to claim that he did not exist as a historical figure would be an unscientific and a non-historical statement.

Confront us with Christ,

Let us wrestle him,

Until tired and bloodied,

We kneel at his feet

لقد جلست في عدة صفوف جامعية، وشاركت في عدة أحاديث، سمعت فيها الإدعاء التالي

لا نملك براهين على أن يسوع كان شخصا حقيقيا. لا نمتلك سوى جملة واحدة من المؤرخ اليهودي يوسيفوس في القرن الأول (أي سنوات 0-100 بعد الميلاد؛ يسوع مات حوالي سنة 30)، وإيشارتَين في كتب تاريخ رومانية

وعادة ما أجيب: ولكن نمتلك أيضا 27 كتاب في العهد الجديد (أي ما يُسمى بالإنجيل بين الناس عادة). 4 منها كتب عن حياة يسوع كُتبت في القرن الأول. والـ23 وثائق الباقية عبارة عن رسائل وكتابات رؤيوية وتاريخية عن يسوع والحركة المسيحية الباكرة المنبثقة منه كُتبت في القرن الأول وبداية القرن الثاني

ويأتي الجواب في كل مرة: ولكن يا نبيل، العهد الجديد مجموعة من الكتب الدينية. ليس تاريخا

تنهّد عميق

دعوني أقدم لكم هذا الإقتباس الطويل من أحد علماء الكتاب المقدس المرموقين، لافداي ألكساندر، من مقالة لها سنة 1995

الكتاب المقدس جزء من الأدب “الحقيقي.” لطالما كان هناك ميل للتعامل مع النصوص الكتابية على أنها نوع أدبي مميز. بالتأكيد، في مكان ما هذا صحيح: نصوص العهد الجديد تؤلّف مجموعة متماسكة، ولديها كثير من القواسم المشتركة مع بعضها البعض كمجموعة من أي نوع أدبي آخر. ولكننا ننسى بسهولة أن ولا واحدة منها كُتبت على أنها فصل في “الكتاب المقدس.” هذا الجمع أتى لاحقا، ولم يكن جزءا من المفهوم الأساسي

بينما كان كتّاب العهد الجديد يكتبون، لم يكونوا يكتبون “كتابات مقدّسة.” مرقس كتب قصة يسوع لمجتمعه. بولس كتب رسالة لكنيسة أسسها. لوقا كتب تاريخ الكنيسة الأولى

فقط لاحقا جمعت الكنيسة هذه الكتب في مجموعة واحدة. ومن بعدها أصبحت “مقدّسة،” أي وثائق تحتوي على سلطان روحي يقود حياة وشهادة الكنيسة

إذا، نعم، من جهة العهد الجديد هو مجموعة من النصوص المقدسة. ولكنها، من جهة أخرى، مقدسة فقط لمن يختار أن يطيعها ويحيا بحسب إرشاداتها. هي، بنفس الوقت، كتابات من القرن الأول ميلاديّ

إذا يا أعزائي، يسوع كان شخصا حقيقيا لأننا نمتلك 27 وثيقة يهودية (لأن المسيحية بدأت كطائفة يهودية) مكتوبة بعد 15-80 سنة من وفاته تأتي على ذكره مطوّلا. زد على ذلك ذكر يوسيفوس ليسوع حوالي سنة 93 بعد الميلاد، وإشارتان صغيرتان ليسوع في بداية القرن الثاني بعد الميلاد على يد رجلَي السياسة الرومانية بلايني وتاكيتس

مع الإشارة، على الهامش، أنه يوجد كتابات كثيرة جدا أخرى تتكلم عن يسوع في القرون الأولى والثانية والثالثة ولكنها غير موجودة ضمن العهد الجديد

إذا، يمكنك أن تناقش مدى صحّة الإدّعاء بأن يسوع ابن الله، أو أنه قام من الموت، أو أنه قادر على غفر خطاياك. يمكنك تمضية سنين عديدة في دراسة تعاليمه وعجائبه وحياته، والوصول لعدّة استتاجات مختلفة. ولكنك لا تستطيع أن تدّعي أن يسوع لم يكن موجودا كشخصية تاريخية، لأن ادعاءك هذا سيكون غير علمي وغير تاريخي

The Hidden Agenda of Christians – هدف المسيحيين المستتر

 

It has become fashionable lately to speak about forming relationships with people who are different without having an “agenda.”

It is even considered impolite to aim to change people or to win them over to your own beliefs.

I think that it is impossible not to have an agenda. You cannot form a relationship with someone without having a goal. The goal might be simply to form the relationship. But that, my friend, is an agenda – a goal.

I have been writing this humble blog with its humble following for quite some time now. I tend to lean towards grace in my discussion of different Christian stands on different issues (or at least try to). I believe we should be graceful.

I also strongly believe that one should be always be respectful with those who are different than oneself (always – even when the other is not).

However, I got to thinking the other day that perhaps my focus on grace would make people think that I have no agenda.

I am sorry, but I do.

I am a follower of Jesus Christ.

I believe that he is the way to life.

I believe that Jesus is the answer to humanity’s problems.

I believe that Jesus was a real person who came to this earth, died on a cross, and rose again after three days to defy sin and death.

Here is my promise to all my friends, and everyone I meet. Every time I speak with you I promise to be respectful. I promise to listen to your point of view on things. I promise that our disagreements will not affect our relationship. We can still be friends.

However, I also confess that as I speak with you, as we share views, I am constantly thinking and praying, “Lord, please make this person decide to follow Jesus.”

Every Christian, that is, every person who is a follower of Christ probably has the same agenda.

There it is folks. I just gave up our hidden secret for all our Muslim, atheist, or people who follow anyone or anything (even Christians) other than Jesus. We want you to become followers of Christ.

We will never force you. We will never (hopefully) disrespect your beliefs. But oh how we want you to also become a follower of Jesus.

We cannot not have this agenda. At the heart of our faith is the proclamation that Jesus died to save the entire human race, and the entire world for that. At the heart of our faith, we confess that Jesus is God’s special revelation. At the heart of our faith, we acknowledge the need for Jesus in order to be victorious over sin. So, in a sense, I don’t have a choice. If I am to show you love, then for me that means I am to hope that you become a follower of Jesus.

If you are still reading this, and have not given up in utter disgust at my not-so-post-modern stand, allow me to end by saying that having an agenda will never mean I will only love those who agree with me. It only means that Jesus is not just a belief I hold, but I he is my very identity – my saviour and my Lord.

Let us stand in prayer

Lord,

May the earth

The entire earth

Be filled

With your glory

هدف المسيحيين المستتر

أصبح من الشائع في هذا الزمن التكلم عن بناء علاقات مع الناس المختلفين عنك بدون وجود نية مستترة لديك

حتى أن البعض يعتقد أنه أمر مناف للأداب أن تحاول تغيير شخص ما أو جعله يعتنق معتقداتك

أعتقد أنه من المستحيل ألا يكون لديك هدف. لا تستطيع أن تكوّن علاقة مع أحدهم بدون هدف. قد يكون الهدف بكل بساطة هو تكوين العلاقة، ولكن هذا يا صديقي، هو هدف

لقد مر وقت على كتابتي في هذه المدونة المتواضعة مع عدد أتباعي المتواضع. أميل عادة في مناقشتي للمواقف المسيحية المختلفة نحو النعمة (أو أحاول على الأقل). أؤمن أنه يجب على المرء أن يكون مليئا بالنعمة

أعتقد أيضا بقوة أنه يجب أن أكون محترما مع الأشخاص المختلفين عني ولو لم يكونوا هم محترمين

ولكن كنت أفكر في الايام الماضية أنه ربما تركيزي على النعمة قد يدفع البعض للإعتقاد بأنني لا أمتلك نية ما من وراء ما أكتب

أنا متأسف، ولكن لدي هدف

أنا تابع ليسوع المسيح

أؤمن أنه طريق الحياة

أؤمن أن يسوع هو الحل لمشاكل البشرية

أؤمن أن يسوع شخص حقيقي أتى إلى أرضنا، مات على الصليب، وقام في اليوم الثالث منتصرا على الخطية والموت

وهذا وعدي لكل أصدقائي، وكل من ألتقي بهم. كل مرة أتكلم بها معكم أعدكم بأن أكون محترما. أعدكم بأن أصغي لوجهة نظركم. أعدكم بأن اختلافاتنا لن تؤثر على علاقتنا. نستطيع أن نكون أصدقاء.

ولكن أعترف أنه بينما أتكلم معكم ونتشارك وجهات النظر أنا أفكر وأصلي باستمرار – يا رب دع هذا الشخص يختار أن يتبع يسوع

كل مسيحي، أي كل شخص تابع للمسيح على الأرجح لديه نفس الهدف

هذا الأمر إذا. لقد كشفت سرنا لكل المسلمين والملحدين وكل شخص يتبع أي أمر أو شيء (حتى المسيحيين) غير المسيح. نريدكم أن  تصبحوا أتباعا للمسيح

لن نجبركم. لن (انشالله) نهين معتقداتكم. ولكن كم نتمنى أن تصبحوا أتباعا للمسيح

لا نستطيع ألا نحمل هذا الهدف. في قلب إيماننا يوجد الإعلان أن يسوع مات ليخلص كل البشرية بل كل العالم. في قلب إيماننا نعترف بأن المسيح هو إعلان الله المميز. في قلب إيماننا نعترف بحاجتنا ليسوع لننتصر على الخطية. إذا، في مكان ما، لا نمتلك خيارا. إذا كنا نريد أن نُظهر المحبة فهذا يعني لي أنه يجب أن أتمنى أن تصبح تابعا للمسيح

إذا كنت لا زلت تقرأ ولم تهجر هذه المدونة قرفا بموقفي المنافي لعصر ما بعد الحداثة، دعني أن أختم بالقول ان هذا الهدف لن يعني أبدا أنني فقط سأحب الذين يتفقون معي. هو يعني أن يسوع ليس مجرد اعتقاد أحمله بل هو هويتي – ربي ومخلصي

ليت الأرض

كل الأرض

تمتلئ

بمجدك

Billy Graham, Evangelism, and Universalism – بيلي غراهام والتبشير والخلاص للجميع

Billy Graham died last week. He was the most famous evangelist of the 21^st century.

For those who do not know what an evangelist is, he was a person who went around the world trying to convince people to give their lives to Jesus.

I teach Bible in a Christian school in Beirut (if you live in Beirut, have children, and are looking for a decent school with a loving attitude, give us a call 😉 My class has Muslims and Christians. Almost every week my students ask me which religion is right, Christianity or Islam.

I pause.

Let me make a confession here: I am not Billy Graham. I have never been comfortable with evangelism: talking with strangers to convince them that Jesus is the way.

No, I am not a universalist. I do not believe that all ways lead to heaven. I am neither an atheist. I do not believe that there is no God. I am a Christian.

Let me make another confession: I believe that following Jesus is the only way to have a relationship with God.

I have stood before crowds before and spoken about people’s need for Jesus.

But as I stand before a class of 16 teenagers from different backgrounds, belief systems, and sects, I cannot but get ideas.

“Jesus is the way, but what if Jesus is wider than our belief systems?”

In an interview with Billy Graham in Newsweek Magazine in August 14, 2006, Graham pointed out that the core message of the Gospel, and the love of God “for all people” should take priority. He adds that God’s ways are mysterious. Moreover, Christians should not take every verse of the Bible literally. He adds that “in his [Jesus] death on the cross, some mysterious thing happened between God and the Son that we don’t understand.” When asked whether he believes heaven will be closed to good Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus or secular people, though, Graham says: “Those are decisions only the Lord will make. I believe the love of God is absolute. He said he gave his son for the whole world, and I think he loves everybody regardless of what label they have.”

Yes, I know the many passages in the New Testament that speak of salvation through the work of Christ (his life, death, resurrection, and ascension). I just wanted to point out that a faithful servant of the Gospel was able to say what he said in 2006.

Perhaps my post will make some admirers of the late Billy Graham change their opinion, or it will make some of his critics more lenient towards him.

So, what do I tell my class? I tell them that I am a Christian. I believe that Jesus is the way to God. I have found a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ. I invite them to seek God. I invite them not to be content with what their parents teach them, but to seek a personal relationship with God.

Perhaps my answer will make some of my friends change their opinions about me and my faith. But I strongly believe in two things at the same time, and I hold them both in tension:

• As a human being I need God’s divine presence in my life to live faithfully in Him. Religion is not enough. Religion and religious practices are empty without the Spirit of God. I have access to that divine presence through the work of Jesus Christ.

 

• I do not hold, as a Christian generally, and as an Evangelical Christian specifically (and a Nazarene for that) all the truth about God. God is larger than my church. God is larger than my theology. God is larger than my Bible. God is larger than my religion. God is larger than my mind, ideas, and every concept I have of him.

 

This post is not a call to stop proclaiming the good news of Jesus.

It is a call to proclaim the good news in humility.

It is a call to live the good news and be the good news before speaking about it.

It is a call, above all, to remember that at the core of the message of God through Jesus, we have love.

Help us share His life in us,

Through us,

With others.

بيلي غراهام والتبشير والخلاص للجميع

مات بيلي غراهام الأسبوع الماضي. كان أشهر مبشّر في القرن 21

لمن لا يعرف معنى عبارة مبشّر، هو شخص يدور العالم محاولا إقناع الناس بتسليم حياتهم للمسيح

أنا أعلّم الكتاب المقدس في مدرسة مسيحية في بيروت (إذا كنت تعيش في بيروت ولديك أولاد وتبحث عن مدرسة جيدة مع موقف محب من التلاميذ فتواصل معي ؛) يوجد إسلام ومسيحيين في صفي. تقريبا كل أسبوع يسألونني أي ديانة هي الصح، الإسلام أم المسيحية

أقف ساكتا

دعوني أقدم اعتراف: أنا لست بيلي غراهام. لست مرتاحا مع فكرة التبشير: لا أحبّذ الوقوف أمام أشخاص لا أعرفهم ومحاولة إقناعهم باتباع المسيح

ولكن كلا، لست شموليا، لا أؤمن أن كل الطرق تؤدي للسماء. ولست ملحدا. لا أؤمن أنه لا يوجد إله. أنا مسيحي

دعوني أقدم اعتراف آخر: أؤمن ان اتباع يسوع هو الطريق الوحيد للعلاقة مع الله

لقد وقفت أمام جماهير من قبل وتكلمت عن حاجة الناس ليسوع

ولكن بينما أقف أمام صف من 16 مراهق ومراهقة من عدة خلفيات وأنظمة إيمان وطوائف لا يسعني إلا التفكير

يسوع هو الطريق، ولكن ماذا لو كان يسوع أوسع من إيماننا؟

في مقابلة لبيلي غراهام مع مجلة نيوزويك في 14 آب 2006، صرح غراهام بأن  رسالة الإنجيل الاساسية  ومحبة الله “لكل الناس” يجب أن تأخذ الأولوية. يزيد أن طرق الله عجيبة. زد على ذلك أنه لا يجب على المسيحيين أخذ كل آيات الكتاب المقدس بحرفيتها. ومن ثم يقول أنه “حدث أمر عجيب وغريب بين الله وابنه في موت يسوع على الصليب لا نستطيع ان نفهمه.” وعندما سألوه إذا كان يؤمن أن السماء مغلقة لليهود والمسلمين والبوذيين والهندوس والناس العلمانيين الصالحين، رد غراهام بأن “هذه قرارات سيتخذها الرب. أؤمن بأن محبة الله كاملة. هو قال أنه أعطى ابنه لكل العالم، وأعتقد أنه يحب الجميع بغض النظر عن الأسماء والألقاب

نعم، أعرف أنه توجد عدة مقاطع في العهد الجديد تتكلم عن الخلاص من خلال عمل المسيح (حياته وموته وقيامته وصعوده). ولكنني أردت الإشارة إلى أن خادم أمين للرب قال هذا الكلام سنة 2006

ربما بعد المعجبون بالراحل بيلي غراههام سيغيرون رأيهم به بعد قراءة هذه الكلمات، وربما بعض المنتقدين سيزادون اعجابا به

إذا، كيف أرد على سؤال الصف لي؟ أقول لهم أننسي مسيحي. أؤمن أن يسوع هو الطريق لله. أنا وجدت علاقة شخصية مع الله من خلال يسوع المسيح. أدعوهم لطلب الله. أدعوهم لعدم الإكتفاء بما تعلموه من أهلهم بل طلب علاقة شخصية مع الله

ربما جوابي هذا سيغير رأي بعض أصدقائي بي وبإيماني. ولكنني أؤمن بشدة بأكرين بنفس الوقت، وأتمسك بالإثنين معا في حوار مستمر

• كإنسان أنا أحتاج لحضور الله في حياتي لأحيا بأمانة فيه. الدين لا يكفي. الدين والممارسات الدينية فارغة بدون روح الله. أمتلك الوصول للحضور الإلهي من خلال عمل يسوع المسيح

• لا أمتلك كمسيحي بشكل عام وكإنجيلي (وناصري) بشكل خاص كل الحق عن الله. الله أكبر من كنيستي. الله أكبر من لاهوتي. الله أكبر من كتابي المقدس. الله أكبر من ديانتي. الله أكبر من عقلي وأفكاري وكل مفهوم أمتلكه عنه

Is My Theology Beautiful? هل لاهوتي جميل؟

My college, the Nazarene Theological College in Manchester, shared the following quote on Twitter last Monday:

“Theology ought to be beautiful, because its subject is so beautiful” (Clark H. Pinnock)

2018 begins my fourth year on this blog.

This is blog number 75.

Last year, as I got better acquainted with being a husband and a part-time PhD student, and as I began to discover life as a father, I kind of slowed down on my blogging. Some months I produced one blog. Others zero.

This got me thinking: why am I doing this?

Why am I blogging? What is it about my voice (my Lebanese Palestinian male Evangelical Arab voice) that makes it important for today?

In my first blog, as an explanation for the title of this blog, I wrote (and I quote myself – how exciting is this):

First of all, since I am a Christian, I thought it only appropriate to choose a Bible verse as a title (see Matthew 24:28). Second of all, since I am an Evangelical, I took the verse out of its context and slapped it on my blog. Thirdly, and most importantly, I expect some of my blogs to attract attention (I hope people other than my immediate family do read them), and perhaps some negative attention. Will I end up dead? I have no clue, but the truth must be spoken even if vultures do gather. Finally, Jesus was known to attract some strange personalities (sinners, prostitutes, fishermen, and hungry sick crowds) and I hope this blog will attract the “vultures” of society and perhaps be a source of hope for them.

“Theology ought to be beautiful, because its subject is so beautiful”

Is our Evangelical community in Lebanon producing beautiful theology? Is our Evangelical community in the West producing beautiful theology?

Is our theology, the way we describe God, hopeful, loving, inspiring, and challenging? Or is our theology terrifying, meaningless, hypocritical, and empty?

Do our words push people towards God, or do they push them away from him?

Why do I write?

Well, I guess I am trying to produce some beautiful words about a beautiful God.

So, after 3 years, and at the beginning of 2018, I renew my promise to speak the truth to power even if only a handful will hear.

I renew my promise to speak truth to Christian and Evangelical hypocrisy and to the social systems of oppression even if the vultures gather.

But more importantly, I renew my promise to speak beautifully of my beautiful God, so that even the vultures, the sinners and marginalized of society, will find hope in the person of Jesus.

هل لاهوتي جميل؟

بحلول سنة 2018 أبدأ سنتي الرابعة في التدوين

السنة الماضية، بينما كنت أوطد معرفتي بكيف يكون المرء زوجا وتلميذ دكتوراه بدوام جزئي وبينما كنت أكتشف معنى أن يكون المرء أبا، خففت بعض الشيء من التدوين. في بعض الاشهر كتبت مدونة واحدة وفي البعض الآخر لم أكتب شيئا

ودفعني هذا للتفكير في السبب الذي يدفعني للكتابة

لماذا أدوّن؟ ما الأمر المميز في صوتي (اعرب صوت نبيل: صوت لبناني فلسطيني إنجيلي عربي ذكر) الذي يجعله مهم ليومنا هذا؟

في أول مدونة لي كتبت مفسرا معنى عنوان مدونتي – حيث تجتمع النسور أو الجوارح – وها أنا أقتبس نفسي هنا

أولا، أنا مسيحي، فمن اللائق أن أختار آية كتابية كعنوان للمدونة (أنظر متى 24: 28). ثانيا، أنا إنجيلي، فكان لا بد أن أسرق الآية من سياقها وأضعها على المدونة. ثالثا، أتوقع أن تجذب مدونتي الإهتمام (رجائي أن يقرأها أحد غير أهلي وخطيبتي)، ولربما يكون هذا الإهتمام سلبيا. هل سوف أموت وأصبح جثة؟ لا أعرف، ولكنني سأقول الحق ولو اجتمع النسور. رابعا وأخيرا، يسوع كان يجذب أناسا غريبين (خطاة، زناة، صيادي سمك، وجموع مريضة وجائعة) وأملي أن تجذب هذه المدونة “نسور” مجتمعنا وتكون مصدر رجاء لهم.

يجب أن يكون اللاهوت جميلا لأن موضوعه جميل جدا

هل ينتج المجتمع الإنجيلي في لبنان لاهوت جميل؟ هل ينتج المجتمع الإنجيلي في الغرب لاهوت جميل؟

هل لاهوتنا، أي كيف نصف الله، مليء بالرجاء والمحبة والإلهام والتحدي؟ أو هل لاهوتنا مليء بالخوف واللامعنى والمراءاة والفراغ؟

هل لاهوتنا يقرب الناس من الله أم بعدهم عنه؟

لماذا أكتب؟

 أعتقد أنني أحاول ان أنتج بعض الكلمات الجميلة عن إله جميل

إذا، بعد 3 سنين، وفي بداية 2018، أجدد عهدي بأن أقول الحق بوجه السلطة وحتى لو سمع حفنة من الناس

أجدد عهدي بأن أقول الحق بوجه المراءاة المسيحية والإنجيلية وبوجه الأنظمة الإجتماعية الظالمة ولو اجتمعت الجوارح

ولكن أهم من ذلك، أجدد عهدي بأن أتكلم بشكل جميل عن إلهي الجميل، بحيث حتى الجوارح، أي الخطاة والمهمشين، يجدون الرجاء في شخص يسوع

Last Monday Mustafa Sbeity, a 65-year-old poet who has written more than 10 books, insulted the virgin Mary in a Facebook status. He has since deleted the status and apologized. He is currently in custody and under investigation for charges of blasphemy and encouraging sectarianism. He is also a Muslim.

 

English: I am upset. Why didn’t God appoint (or give me the responsibility to) me to sleep (or have sex with) the virgin Mary so I can give birth to Issa (name of Jesus in the Q’uran) the Christ?

 

Social media has erupted over the past few days. Many Christian voices, prominent and unknown, have called for the severest punishment possible for Sbeity. Some Christians have even resorted to cursing him and his family.

I am a Christian.

I love Jesus.

But, I do not think that Sbeity should be in jail.

Yes, what he said does not aid in the building of Christian-Muslim relationships in Lebanon.

However, free speech is free speech.

If I want the freedom to proclaim Jesus as God, then I should also accept that others will have the freedom to insult my God. We either have free speech or we don’t.

Who decides what goes and what doesn’t on social media? Over the past couple of years in Lebanon, we have seen many people placed in jail over a Facebook status. Some were charged for “insulting the president,” others for “insulting the flag,” and now for insulting religious icons. Perhaps tomorrow I will write something which someone else finds insulting. Should I be placed in Jail? (Maybe you think I should be jailed for defending Sbeity 😉

Do we want a country where authority figures (presidents, symbols, gods) cannot be criticized and mocked?

Will putting Sbeity in prison make him like Jesus? Will it ease the burning hatred between Muslims and Christians in Lebanon?

Let us be honest with each other. The problem is not Mustafa Sbeity with his sarcastic Facebook status. The problem is that there is a deep mistrust between the Muslim and Christian communities. The problem is that Christians are refusing to be Christ-like, and are resorting to curses (and perhaps in the future violence) to “defend their honour.” The problem is that the Lebanese people are not moved to anger when our politicians blatantly steal our rights to clean air, clean roads, affordable housing, secure living, and just about every possible human need, but we are moved to rage when someone insults our God!

I am a Christian. I am in love with Jesus! Mustafa Sbeity’s Facebook post bothers me. I find it repulsive. But it does not move me to anger. If I ever get to meet Sbeity, I will greet him as a friend.

Mustafa Sbeity, you will probably never read this, but here it goes anyway: I forgive you for what you wrote about Jesus and the virgin Mary. I hope that one day you will get to know Jesus better. I also respect your right to hate my God and make fun of him. You do not deserve to be in jail.

دفاع عن مصفى سبيتي

الإثنين الماضي أهان مصطفى سبيتي، الشاعر الذي عمره 65 الذي كتب أكثر من 10 كتب، مريم العذراء في ستاتوس على فايسبوك. ثم عاد ومحى الستاتوس واعتذر. هو حاليا محجوز ويخضع للتحقيق بتهم التجديف والتشجيع على الطائفية. هو مسلم

في الأيام الماضية انفجرت وسائل التواصل الإجتماعي حيث علت عدة أصوات مسيحية، مرموقة وشعبية، داعية لإنزال أقصى العقوبات بسبيتي. وقد قام بعض المسيحيون بشتمه وشتم عائلته

أنا أحب يسوع

ولكن لا أعتقد أنه يجب وضع سبيتي في الحبس

نعم، لا أعتقد أن الذي قاله يساعد في بناء العلاقات المسيحية-الإسلامية في لبنان ولكن حرية الراي هي حرية الراي

إذا كنت أريد الحرية لأعلن أن يسوع هو الله فيجب أن أقبل أن لدى الآخرين الحرية بإهانة إلهي. إما يكون لدينا حرية الرأي أو لا يكون

ثم يقرر ما هو مسموح به على وسائل التواصل الإجتماعي؟ في السنوات القليلة الماضية في لبنان رأينا عدد من الأشخاص يوضعون في الحبس بسبب ستاتوس على فايسبوك. اتُّهم البعض بـ “إهانة رئيس الجمهورية” أو “إهانة العلم” والأن إهانة الرموز الدينية. لربما أكتب أنا غدا أمرا ما ويجده أحدهم مهينا. هل يجب أن أُزجّ في الحبس؟ قد يكون البعض الأن يود وضعي في الحبس بسبب هذه المدونة

هل نريد بلد ممنوع فيه الانتقاد أو السخرية من رموز السلطة – الرؤساء والآلهة؟

هل وضع سبيتي في الحبس سيجعله يحب يسوع؟ هل سيخفف من الكراهية المستعرة بين المسلمين والمسيحيين في لبنان؟

دعونا نكون شفافين مع أنفسنا ونعترف أن المشكلة ليست في مصطفى سبيتي والستاتوس الساخر. المشكلة هي الشك العميق المتبادل بين المجتمعات المسيحية والمسلمة. المشكلة هي رفض المسيحيين أن يكونوا على شبه المسيح وانقيادهم نحو الشتائم (وربما لاحقا العنف) لـ”يدافعوا عن شرفهم.” المشكلة أن الشعب اللبناني لم يتحرك غضبا من السرقة الوقحة من قبل سياسينا لحقنا بالهواء النظيف والطرقات النظيفة والسكن المقبول والعيش الآمن وتقريبا كل الحاجات الإنسانية، وها هو يستشيط غيظا عندما يهين أحدهم الله!

أنا مسيحي. أنا مغروم بيسوع! وستاتوس مصطفى سبيتي يزعجني. أجده مقززا. ولكنه لا يغضبني. وإذا شاءت الصدف أن ألتقي بمصفى سبيتي يوما ما فسأسلم عليه كصديق

يا مصطفى سبيتي، وانا أعرف أنك على الأرجح لن تقرأ هذه الكلمات، ولكن أقول لك أنني أسامحك على ما كتبته عن يسوع والعذراء مريم. أتمنى يوما ما أن تتعرف على يسوع بشكل أفضل. أحترم حقك بكره إلهي والسخرية منه. لا تستحق أن تكون في الحبس

Happy Mother’s Day God! – عيد أم سعيد يا الله

Yes, I know that God is a “he” in the bible, we sing “Father God I wonder,” and pray “our father who is in heaven,” but allow me to challenge my and your perceptions with the following examples from the Bible where God is an all-powerful loving mother!

God’s image is reflected in the both male and female – Genesis 1:27

God is compared to a mother eagle protecting her young – Deuteronomy 32:11-12.

God speaks of himself as a kind mother who feeds her children, hugs them, and shows them love – Hosea 11:3-4.

In the same book God describes his anger as that of a bear mom robber of her cubs – Hosea 13:8.

God compares his love to his people with the love of a nursing mother to her child – Isaiah 49:15.

In the same book, he vows to comfort his people like a mother comforts her child – Isaiah 66:13.

The singer compares his peace in God’s presence as a weaned child sleeping calmly in his mother’s lap – Psalm 131:2.

Jesus himself compared himself to a mother hen trying to gather her rebellious children under her wings – Matthew 23:37 and Luke 13:34.

 

God is a wonderful father, yes, but he, or she, is also a compassionate mother.

So join me today in wishing God a happy mother’s day!

نعم، أعرف أن الله “هو” في الكتاب المقدس، أننا نرنم “يا أبانا لست أدري،” ونصلي “أبانا الذي في السماوات،” ولكن دعوني أتحدى نظرتي ونظرتكم بهذه الأمثلة من الكتاب المقدس حيث الله هو أم محبة وكليّة القدرة

صورة الله معكوسة في الذكر والأنثى – تكوين 1: 27

يتم مقارنة الله بأنثى النسر التي تحمي صغارها – تثنية 32: 11-12

يتكلم الله عن نفسه كأم حنونة تطعم صغارها، تعانقهم، وتريهم محبة – هوشع 11: 3-4

في نفس الكتاب يصف الله غضبه على أنه مثل غضب دبّة فقدت أطفالها – هوشع 13: 8

يقارن الله محبته لشعبه بمحبة الأم لرضيعها – اشعياء 49: 15

في نفس الكتاب يعد بأن يعزي شعبه مثل ما تعزي الام ابنها – اشعياء 66: 13

يقارن المرنم السلام الذي يجده في محضر الله لنوم الطفل الفطيم بسلام في أحضان أمه – مزمور 131: 2

يسوع نفسه يقارن نفسه لدجاجة تحاول أن تجمع فراخها الثائرين تحت جناحيها – متى 23: 37 ولوقا 13: 34

نعم، الله أب رائع، ولكنه أيضا أم حنونة

Is it God’s Will that Trump becomes President? هل هي مشيئة الله أن يكون دونالد ترامب رئيسا؟

 

Donald Trump is the new president of the USA.

Fact number 1 on the minds of most people today.

Shocking, right?

As Americans and the world come to terms with this news, it struck me how many of my friends on Facebook (too many really) reacted by stating the following fact 2:

It is God’s will that Trump becomes president.

Is that so?

Does God control this world? Is he in charge of all its details?

I have a problem with this line of thinking for two simple reasons.

 

If everything is God’s will, then why is the world messed up?

If God is controlling all the details, then he is doing a very bad job of it.

If God were truly in control and the world was truly moving according to his will then, if he is the loving God we speak about and see in Christ, the world would be a far better place to live in.

 

What about free will?

Did God choose to appoint Hitler as ruler of Germany? Did God start the war in Syria? Did God mastermind the shootings in Paris? Is God trafficking millions of women in the sex trade? Did God get drunk, drive a car, and run people over?

 

I firmly believe in the goodness of God.

I do not believe in a God who causes the chaos, but a God who shouts “let there be light” above and into the chaos.

I firmly believe in a God who takes the evil of a crucified Jesus and turns it into salvation for the entire world.

 

The current world is a place of darkness – as the apostle Paul puts it (see, I also know the Bible) this world is a “present darkness” ruled by authorities and powers that oppose the will of God –  and one-day God will transform this present Babel of darkness into a new creation of light.

Until that day comes, let us not sit in idleness as the darkness grows around us. Let us rather take arms and fight the good fight, working hard to be a voice of love and truth in a world veering towards hatred.

 

No, God did not cause the war in Syria. Money, power, foolishness, and greed caused it. But the church must move to show love to Syrian refugees, turning the war into an opportunity to be the graceful presence of Jesus Christ.

 

No, God did not appoint Donald Trump. A portion of the American people voted him into the office. But the church must move to be a voice of love in a time where, across the globe, the rhetoric of fear, hate, and exclusion growls louder every minute.

 

The world does not submit to the will of God.

I choose to submit.

 

Let us stand in prayer,

Lord,

The present darkness

Grows

Thicker.

Won’t you thunder

Let there be

Love

Amen

مدونة #52 – هل مشيئة الله أن يتم انتخاب دونالد ترامب؟

دونالد ترامب هو الرئيس الجديد للولايات المتحدة الأمريكية

وهذه هي الحقيقة رقم 1 على أذهان معظم الناس اليوم

صدمة، أليس كذلك؟

بينما يستوعب الأمريكيون وباقي العالم هذا الخبر، استوقفني كيف أن الكثير من أصدقائي  على فايسبوك كانت ردة فعلهم هي الحقيقة رقم 2

انها مشيئة الله أن يصبح ترامب رئيسا

حقا؟

هل الله مسيطر على الدنيا؟ هل يسيطر على كل التفاصيل؟

لدي مشكلة مع هذا الطرح لسببين بسيطين

اذا كان كل شيئ هو مشيئة الله، فلماذا العالم سيئ للغاية؟

اذا كان الله مسيطر على كل التفاصيل، اذا هو يقوم بعمل سيئ جدا

لو كان الله حقا هو المسيطر والعالم يتحرك بحسب ارادته، واذا كان هو الإله المحب الذي نتكلم عنه ونراه في المسيح، فلكان العالم مكان أفضل بكثير مما هو عليه اليوم

ماذا عن الإرادة الحرة؟

هل اختار الله أن يصبح هيتلر رئيسا لالمانيا؟ هل بدأ الله الحرب في سوريا؟ هل خطط الله لهجمات باريس؟ هل يقوم الله ببيع ملايين النساء في الاتجار الجنسي؟ هل سكر الله، قاد سيارة، ودهس الناس؟

أنا اؤمن بشدة بصلاح الله

أن لا اؤمن أن الله يسبب الفوضى بل أن الله هو الذي يصرخ “ليكن نور” فوق الفوضى وبداخلها

انا اؤمن بشدة باله يأخذ الشر الذي هو صليب المسيح ويحوله لخلاص لكل العالم

العالم الذي نعيش فيه اليوم هو مكان ظلمة – كما قال الرسول بولس (أنا أيضا أعرف الكتب المقدسة) هذا العالم هو “الظلام القائم” المحكوم من قوات وأسياد تقف ضد مشيئة الله – وفي يوم من الأيام سوف يغير الله ظلام بابل الحالي إلى نور خليقة جديدة

الى حين مجيء ذلك الوقت، دعونا لا نجلس بلا عمل بينما الظلام يمتد من حولنا. بل دعونا نحمل السلاح ونكافح كفاحنا الشريف، عاملين بجد لنكون صوت المحبة والحق في عالم ينجرف نحو الكراهية

كلا، لم يسبب الله الحرب في سوريا. المال، السلطة، الغباء، والجشع سببوا الحرب. ولكن على الكنيسة أن تتحرك لتظهر المحبة للنازحين السوريين، محوّلة بذلك الحرب إلى فرصة لنكون وجود يسوع المسيح المنعم

كلا، لم يعين الله دونالد ترامب. جزء من الشعب الأمريكي انتخبه رئيسا. ولكن على الكنيسة أن تتحرك لتكون صوت المحبة في وقت، في كل أنحاء الكرة الأرضية، يرتفع صوت الخوف والكراهية والإنعزال مزمجرا

العالم لا يخضع لمشيئة الله

أنا أختار أن أخضع

 

دعونا نقف لنصلي

يا رب

الظلمة القائمة

تنمو

وتمدد

ألا تزمجر

ليكن نور
